Prof. Dr. Hülya YILDIZ BAĞÇE September 2018, 175 pages This thesis aims to analyze British-Pakistani author Nadeem Aslam’s novels The Wasted Vigil (2008) and The Blind Man’s Garden (2013) in terms of how Afghanistan and Pakistan are represented and reconfigured as postcolonial spaces. In the spirit aspired by Sara Upstone’s concept of post-space which suggests a sense of spatiality that resists imperial totalizations of space, subverts colonial frames and puts forward spatial reconfigurations by foregrounding diverse experiences of postcolonial spaces, this study essentially focuses on the post-space representations embedded in these novels. Challenging nation as a political construct and reframing it through alternative spatial locations, Aslam’s novels analysed in this study subtly reconfigure national spaces by accentuating smaller-than-national and larger-than national spaces. -

The distances between dream and reality are being reduced. The use of Internet is increasing day by day in Pakistan. Progress in computer world has deep effects on social, economic, literary and political life.The fields of language, literature and fine arts in Pakistan should know the reality that computers have now become the necessary part of our life. Notes Introduction 1. Although constructions of the “West” as “a collective heritage, an omnivo- rous melange of cultures” are problematic (see Shohat and Stam 13–15), I use “West/Western” while discussing general representational issues; otherwise, I refer more specifically to the UK or the US. 1 How the World Changed: Narratives of Nationhood and Displaced Muslim Identities 1. I would like to clarify here that Islamic shariat laws such as the Hudood Ordinance or even the Blasphemy Law must not be conflated with the way that these laws have been promulgated in Pakistan since the late 1970s, which still attracts harsh criticism. It is the loopholes within the laws and the Ordinance that have “encouraged violence and injustices against women” and have become the subject of many second-generation writers. However, some writers, such as Nadeem Aslam, are also critical of what they assume to be conservative tendencies within Islam. In most cases, this highlights the novelist’s own limited understanding of Islam, as I discuss in Chapter 4. (see Rahat Imran 78–100). 2. My own work in fact fills the gap left by Bradley and Tate in their book The New Atheist Novel: Fiction, Philosophy and Polemic after 9/11. Chambers argues that Bradley and Tate do not “engage in sufficient depth with the genuine political grievances that drive extremism, or the way in which Anglo- American foreign policy may itself be viewed as a form of terrorism”. Through historical contextualisation of the “9/11 novel” category, I attempt to give “more nuanced accounts of religion, doubt and multicultural politics”. -

This 78 lot auction includes a truly impressive range of paintings and sculpture by Modern masters, from storied collections with stellar provenances. Leading the sale is a luminescent and meditative painting by Vasudeo S. Gaitonde from 1973. Further highlights include a moving, large-scale painting of The Deposition by Francis Newton Souza and important works from wider South Asia by Ali Imam Raza, one of the founders of Modernism in Pakistan, alongside works by Abdur Rahman Chughtai and Sadequain. This sale opens with a collection of never-before-seen Indian works from the Swiss collection of Herr Dölf Amacker. Herr Amacker lived in India from 1941 to 1961; his 21 lot collection is a showcase of modern Indian art including works by Ganesh Pyne, K.H. Ara, Mohan Samant and early works by M. F Hussein. Yamini Mehta, International Head of South Asian Art, said: “This sale is characterised by the freshness to market of these wonderful paintings, which have been sourced from across the globe – from Brazil, to Spain, to Switzerland.
