JOHN FROW “A Nonexistent Coterie”: Pessoa’s Names A narrative begins at the end of a journey, at a place where “the sea ends and the earth begins. It is raining over the colorless city. The waters of the river are polluted with mud, the riverbanks flooded. A dark vessel, the Highland Brigade, ascends the somber river and is about to anchor at the quay of Alcântara.”1 A passenger disembarks, a certain Doctor Ricardo Reis, aged 48, born in Oporto and arriving from Rio de Janeiro, as we learn when he signs the register at the Hotel Bragança. He has returned to Lisbon after receiving a telegram from a fellow poet, Álvaro de Campos, informing him of the death of their friend Fernando Pessoa. Reading through the newspaper archives, Dr Reis finds an obituary that reports that Pessoa died “in silence, just as he had always lived,” and it adds that “[i]n his poetry he was not only Fernando Pessoa but also Álvaro de Campos, Alberto Caeiro, and Ricardo Reis. There you are,” the narrator continues, an error caused by not paying attention, by writing what one misheard, because we know very well that Ricardo Reis is this man who is reading the newspaper with his own open and living eyes, a doctor forty-eight years of age, one year older than Fernando Pessoa when his eyes were closed, eyes that were dead beyond a shadow of a doubt. No other proofs or testimonies are needed to verify that we are not dealing with the same person, and if there is anyone who is still in doubt, the narrator persists, let him go to the Hotel Bragança and check with the manager, a man of impeccable credentials (23-24). -

3 World Literature in a Poem The Case of Herberto Helder1 Helena C. Buescu It is arguable that, if world literature is also a mode of reading, as David Damrosch states, there may be special cases in which the choice of works to be read and/or to be translated has to be accounted for as a poetic gesture towards a planetary literary awareness. In such instances, the sense of literary estrangement is part of the reading process, and the project of its non- domestication (perhaps a stronger way to draw on Lawrence Venuti’s notion of foreignization) is very much at the centre of the hermeneutical process. In what follows I will be dealing with an interesting case of translation (or some- thing akin to it), from the point of view of a poet. It is not only that it is a poet who translates poems by others. It is also, as we shall see, that he translates them as a poet, that is, as part of his own poetic stance. What is (and what isn’t) a literary translation? That is the question that lies at the heart of this endeavour. As we shall see, it is also a case in which, through translation, cultural diversity and provenance are transformed into a clearly distinguished work: translating is a mode of reading, but it is also a mode of shifting socio- logical and aesthetic functions and procedures. This is why we may be able to say that world literature is not solely a mode of reading, but a mode that deals with the constant invention of reading—by reshaping the centre and the peripheries of literary systems, and by thus proposing ever-changing forms of actually reading texts that seemed to have been already read. -

Abstract Here we present two unpublished essays by Hubert Jennings about the challenges of translating the poetry of Fernando Pessoa: the first one of them, brief and fragmentary, is analyzed in the introduction; the second, longer and also covering issues besides translation, is presented in the postscript. Having as a starting point the Pessoan poem “O que me doe” and three translations compared by Hubert Jennings, this presentation examines some aspects of poetic musicality in the Portuguese language: verse measurement, stress dynamics, rhymes, anaphors, and parallelisms. The introduction also discusses how much the English versions of the poem, which are presented by Jennings, recreate (or not) the musical-poetic dimensions of the original text. The Engine of the Republic: The Presidential Cars PRESENTATION The museum collection The Engine of the Republic – The Presidential Cars came about as a result of a challenge issued by the Museum of Transport and Communications to the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic. The challenge, which was immediately accepted, was to create a permanent exhibit that would make it possible for the public to visit, assembled and preserved, one of the most important collections of cars in the country: those that have been in the service of its presidents since the founding of the Republic, over 100 years ago. This collection also reflects an awareness that the vehicles exhibited here are part of a historical heritage. As such, they are no longer disposed of once decommissioned, but become part of the collection of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic. The job of recording, locating and recovering the cars that were used by the presidents of the Republic, an ongoing task, has been a priority of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic practically since its inception, as already demonstrated by a group of temporary exhibitions: beginning in 2004, to coincide with the opening of the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic, and continuing over the course of subsequent years, in Porto, Lisbon, Figueira da Foz and Guimarães. Siting this collection in Porto also contributes to the Museum of the Presidency of the Republic’s aim of decentralising its activity, bringing part of its collection to the north of the country, a region with a great tradition of car collecting. -

MARIA DE JESUS SIMÕES BARROSO SOARES Maria de Jesus Simões Barroso Soares has a degree in Historical and Philosophical Sciences from the Faculty of Arts, Lisbon and the course of Dramatic Arts from the National Conservatory. While studying at the university, she performed in the National Theatre for four years but was later removed as a result of her political positions as member of the Democratic Opposition to the regime of Salazar. Even though qualified to do so, during the regimes of Salazar and Marcelo Caetano, she was forbidden to teach, even in private schools. She always had an active role in cultural life, mainly through her recitals of Portuguese and foreign poetry. In 1949 she married her university colleague, Mário Soares, with whom she has two children: Isabel and João. She has five grandchildren from her son. She was the Democratic Opposition’s candidate for Member of Parliament in 1969, during the regime of Marcelo Caetano. She participated in the 111 Congress of the Democratic Opposition in Aveiro in 1973. She was present in Bad-Munstereifel at the time of the foundation of the Socialist Party. Having participated in all the electoral campaigns since April 25th, she was elected Member of Parliament for the districts of Santarém, Oporto and Algarve. For many years she has run a private school “Colégio Moderno”, founded by her father in law, João Soares, a teacher. Over ten years, from 1986 to March 9th 1996, as wife of the President of the Republic, she has been involved in activities aimed at supporting the areas of culture, education and family, childhood, social solidarity, female dimension, health, the integration of the disabled and the prevention of violence. -

A palarvra e a revolução: Rafael e o convento da poesia de Manuel Alegre Paulo Ricardo Kralik Angelini ∗ Resumo: Narrativa de incertezas, teia construída a partir de textos outros, recordações e divagações, Rafael configura-se como uma obra em que as palavras vinculam-se com uma essência libertária. Em um jogo de espelhos, as inúmeras referências intertextuais iluminam-se e refletem em outras imagens, tendo em foco um regime totalitário e as consequentes aniquilações do indivíduo, que se fragmenta. Este artigo investiga as artimanhas narrativas desenvolvidas pelo escritor Manuel Alegre na construção dos caminhos de um português que se descobre sempre rumo a Lisboa, por mais que suas trilhas levem-no para outros lugares. Palavras-chave: Manuel Alegre, Rafael, Portugal, Revolução dos Cravos, Narrador, Intertextualidade, Wayne Booth, Lisboa “A poesia é uma pátria, em qualquer língua do mundo porque nenhuma é estrangeira” (ALEGRE, 2004, p. 118) O escritor Urbano Tavares Rodrigues, em suas lúcidas incursões pela crítica literária, aponta a “Resistência, revista à luz clara da liberdade”, como um dos temas caros à literatura portuguesa depois do abril de 1974. Os duros anos de um quase confinamento à força por conta da violência e da opressão salazaristas trazem, em seu vácuo, uma longa discussão acerca das personagens – históricas ou não – que juntas participaram da Revolução dos Cravos: “Pedro logo encaminha-se para a casa onde vai ser preso dentro de momentos, são três da madrugada do dia 24 de abril de 1974” (Ibidem, p. 241). Em Rafael (2004), obra de Manuel Alegre (1936), um homem luta pela mudança do mundo.
