7 Coastal Shrimp Farming in Thailand: Searching for Sustainability B. Szuster Department of Geography, University of Hawai’i at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Shrimp farming in Thailand provides a fascinating example of how the global trade in agricultural com- modities can produce rapid transformations in land use and resource allocation within coastal regions of tropical developing nations. These transformations can have profound implications for the long-term integrity of coastal ecosystems, and represent a significant challenge to government agencies attempting to manage land and water resources. Thailand’s shrimp-farming industry has suffered numerous regional ‘boom and bust’ production cycles that created considerable environmental damage in rural communities. At a national scale, these events were largely masked, however, by a shifting cultivation strategy and local adaptations in husbandry techniques. This chapter outlines the need to upgrade plan- ning systems, improve water supply infrastructure and enhance extension training services within coastal communities to address ongoing systemic environmental management problems within the Thai shrimp-farming industry. Preliminary Draft: not for Quote THE OFFICIAL DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE AS A CATALYST OF FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT AND INDUSTRIAL AGGLOMERATION Matsuo WATANABE Japan Institute of International Affairs 1. INTRODUCTION This chapter is intended to investigate the contribution of infrastructure development financed by official development assistance (ODA) to attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) and formation of industrial agglomeration with reference to the automotive industry in Thailand. Thailand has been one of the major production bases in the ASEAN, and currently there are 700 automotive-related companies. The origin of the industry in Thailand dates back to the 1960s when the country invited foreign manufacturers, mainly Japanese, under the import substitution industrialisation (ISI) strategy. The country subsequently changed to an export-oriented strategy in the beginning of the 1970s afterwards which has led to the remarkable success of industrialisation (including automotive sector) and economic development. The success of Thai automotive industry is represented by the expansion of volume of production and export which has been the largest among ASEAN members. This expansion is enabled by a concentration of investments in the industry (known as ‘agglomeration’), among others, from foreign part suppliers in the Eastern Seaboard (ESB) area. The article is part of the research results on the beliefs around Naga in Nongkhai province, Thailand. The research aimed to study the history of the belief in Naga, and the area in Nongkhai province where the belief is still prominent, through non-participatory observation, non-structured interviews, and the study of the related documents and research. The study revealed the Nongkhai people have been passing down the myth and the belief of Naga, through storytelling from their ancestors to the current generation, as a way to maintain their faith in Buddhism and to draw the connection between the belief and their settlements. Currently, the myth is being passed on to the tourists who show an interest in knowing more about the tradition and culture. The "Naga fireballs" phenomenon, which had become a majestic festival that reflects the identity of the children of the City of Nagas, is also being passed on this way. -

INTRODUCTION 1.1 Purpose of Survey It is estimated that more than 1000 diverse species of fish make their habitats in the watershed of the Mekong River. It is also said that approximately 60% of the protein consumed on a daily basis by people living in the region comes from fish. Thus, there is a close relationship between people's livelihood and fish. In spite of this fact, there is surprisingly little scientific data about the fish in the Mekong River and their habitats. On the other hand, villagers who make their living from fishing every day in the Mekong Basin have a lot of knowledge not only about the fish and their behavior, but also about the relationship between fish migration and changes in water level. -

Driven by the station data, the Mun-GBHM model is successfully calibrated against the discharge observed in 1991, but the model accuracy decreases with the increase of simulation time during the validation period of 1992–1999. Driven by the TRMM rainfall and other meteorological data from GLDAS, using the same parameters as above, the model performs reliably at both the monthly and daily scale. Moreover, when the model is calibrated with one year of gridded data, its performance can be further improved. Our results demonstrate that TRMM and GLDAS are able to drive the GBHM so providing reliable hydrologic predictions in such data-poor or ungauged basins. -

A Questionnaire on Rural Household has to districted assess their understanding knowledge was used, and rural household‟ attitudes of their persistence was analyzed with a sample of 400 persons whose age were 15-60 years old and living in Wang Nam Yen and Klong Had Districts in Sa Kaeo Province, Thailand. The Krejcie and Morgan technique from 101,725 persons was selected using a random sample size with percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, and F-test were analyzed. It has found that the quality of the Mixed Medias on Global Warming for information education of people‟s satisfaction was to highest level that it confirmed with criterion; rural household‟s perceptions of their pre- and post- understanding knowledge to their studying on Mixed Medias were significantly different at the .05 confidence level, the pre- and post-persistence attitudes on Mixed Medias were significantly at level .05 confidence level, and their understanding related to environment issues at a high level of 78.20%. -

Environmental and Ecological Factors Affecting the Presence of Giant Land Turtles in the Late Cenozoic Author: Orion Jenkins-Houk GEOL394 Advisor: Dr. Thomas Holtz Due 4/28/2020 1 Abstract: Various species of turtles within Testudinidae (true tortoises) and the recently extinct Meiolaniidae of Australia grew to immense proportions throughout the late Cenozoic, including a significant number of taxa that have persisted into modern times. Although these giant land turtles mostly occur on islands today, there are cases of extinct giant land turtles on every non- Antarctic continent during the Cenozoic. This raises an interesting question: if giant turtles can occur on the continents, presumably in the presence of both predators capable of penetrating their defensive carapace and other herbivores competing for the same food sources, what other factors may be related to the evolution of gigantism in land turtles? This study tests the influence of two ecological factors, presence of durophagous (bone-crushing) predators and competing herbivores, and three environmental factors, mean annual temperature, aridity, and landmass type (insular versus continental) on occurrences of giant land turtles. The results of the Fisher exact tests collected demonstrate that the presence of competing herbivores and insularity have a significant effect on the occurrence of modern giant land turtles. Miocene giant land turtles appear to occur independently of all five factors, while Pliocene giants tend to occur in areas of higher average temperatures. Pleistocene -
