Skripsi ini disusun sebagai salah satu syarat untuk mendapat gelar sarjana pada program Strata-1 di Jurusan Sastra Jepang, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Adapun skripsi yang saya buat berisikan tentang tradisi pemakaian zouri dalam kehidupan masyarakat Jepang dari masa lampau hingga pada masa kini. Skripsi ini penulis persembahkan kepada orang tua penulis, Bapak Timbul Johnson Damanik S,ME dan Yayuk Rahayu Br Sinaga, orang tua terbaik dan terhebat yang dengan tulus memberikan kasih sayang, doa, perhatian, nasihat, dukungan moral dan materil kepada penulis sehingga penulis dapat menyelesaikan studi di Sastra Jepang USU, khususnya menyelesaikan skripsi ini. Dalam perkembangan sejarahnya Jepang mendapat pengaruh kuat dari negara China baik dari segi pengetahuan, pemerintahan juga kebudayaan. Jepang merupakan negara yang dijuluki negara matahari dan negara bunga sakura. Dijuluki demikian karena di negara Jepang mayoritas beragama Shinto yang menyembah matahari sehingga disebut negara matahari, sedangkan julukan negara sakura diberikan karena banyak bunga sakura yang tumbuh di tanah Jepang, bahkan untuk menyambut musim semi sakura orang Jepang mempunyai suatu tradisi, yaitu perayaan hanami (perayaan melihat mekarnya bunga) sebagai simbol kebahagiaan karena datangnya musim semi, dimana di saat itu bunga sakura mekar dengan cantiknya dari zaman Jomon sampai zaman Heisei sekarang, orang Jepang mampu melestarikan kebudayaannya sendiri. The tradition of offering embroidered sweet bags containing gifts of small scented objects, herbs, or money began in the mid-sixteenth century. Typically, they are about five inches square with a drawstring closure at the top and two to three covered drops at the bottom. Economical housewives could even create their own perfumed mixtures to put inside. A 1621 recipe “to make sweete bags with little cost” reads: Take the buttons of Roses dryed and watered with Rosewater three or foure times put them Muske powder of cloves Sinamon and a little mace mingle the roses and them together and putt them in little bags of Linnen with Powder. The present object has recently been identified as a rare surviving example of a large-format sweet bag, sometimes referred to as a “sachet.” Lined with blue silk taffeta, the verso of the central canvas section contains two flat slit pockets, opening on the long side, into which sprigs of herbs or sachets filled with perfumed powders could be slipped to scent a wardrobe or chest.

    Urban Fictions of Early Modern Japan: Identity, Media, Genre Thomas Gaubatz Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2016 © 2016 Thomas Gaubatz All rights reserved ABSTRACT Urban Fictions of Early Modern Japan: Identity, Media, Genre Thomas Gaubatz This dissertation examines the ways in which the narrative fiction of early modern (1600- 1868) Japan constructed urban identity and explored its possibilities. I orient my study around the social category of chōnin (“townsman” or “urban commoner”)—one of the central categories of the early modern system of administration by status group (mibun)—but my concerns are equally with the diversity that this term often tends to obscure: tensions and stratifications within the category of chōnin itself, career trajectories that straddle its boundaries, performative forms of urban culture that circulate between commoner and warrior society, and the possibility (and occasional necessity) of movement between chōnin society and the urban poor. Examining a range of genres from the late 17th to early 19th century, I argue that popular fiction responded to ambiguities, contradictions, and tensions within urban society, acting as a discursive space where the boundaries of chōnin identity could be playfully probed, challenged, and reconfigured, and new or alternative social roles could be articulated. The emergence of the chōnin is one of the central themes in the sociocultural history of early modern Japan, and modern scholars have frequently characterized the literature this period as “the literature of the chōnin.” But such approaches, which are largely determined by Western models of sociocultural history, fail to apprehend the local specificity and complexity of status group as a form of social organization: the chōnin, standing in for the Western bourgeoisie, become a unified and monolithic social body defined primarily in terms of politicized opposition to the ruling warrior class.

Sibley Introduction The correspondence between Minakata Kumagusu (1867-1941) and Iwata Jun'ichi (1900-1945) from which the following five letters have been ex- cerpted began in 1931 and extended to the year of Minakata's death ten years later. These selections all date from the first few months of the cor- respondence, which eventually ran to 120 letters. I have chosen them rather than some later letters because it is here that the correspondents seek both to define the terms of their divergent approaches to the history of homosex- ualities in Japan and, through a somewhat lopsided dialogue on central principles, to find common ground. Iwata expresses himself deferentially to the much older man (though not without some pointed questions in the Ietter of 8/27 /31) while Minakata, in keeping with his age and his great ac- complishments, maintains a stern, often schoolmasterish tone where guid- ing principles are concerned. Consequently, if someone were to ask, "What is the true meaning of the Way of the Samurai?" the person who would be able to answer promptly is rare. This is because it has not been established in one's mind beforehand. From this, one's unmindfulness of the Way can be known. Negligence is an extreme thing. The Way of the Samurai is found in death. When it comes to either/or, there is only the quick choice of death. It is not particularly difficult. Be determined and advance. To say that dying without reaching one's aim is to die a dog's death is the frivolous way of sophisticates. When pressed with the choice of life or death, it is not necessary to gain one's aim. We all want to live. And in large part we make our logic according to what we like. But not having attained our aim and continuing to live is cowardice. This is a thin dangerous line. To die without gaming one's aim is a dog's death and fanaticism. But there is no shame in this. This is the substance of the Way of the Samurai. If by setting one's heart right every morning and evening, one is able to live as though his body were already dead, he pains freedom in the Way. His whole life will be without blame, and he will succeed in his calling.
