Naoko Takeuchi After going to the post-recording parties, I realized that Sailor Moon has come to life! I mean they really exist - Bunny and her friends!! I felt like a goddess who created mankind. Manga is the Japanese” word for Quick Facts “comic,” but in English it means “Japanese comics.” Naoko Takeuchi was born to Ikuko and Kenji Takeuchi on March 15, 1967 in the city * Born in 1967 of Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. She has one sibling: a younger brother named Shingo. Takeuchi loved drawing from a very young age, * Japanese so drawing comics came naturally to her. How Grawlixes Structured Comix Mve Web.Pdf
Introduction ‘Basic Grawlixes’are repetitive, scribble-like patterns that are related to the structure of a cartoon-characters’ background program responsible for a routine. When this routine is suddenly cut-off by an unexpected event, the trace of the program continues as it is brought under attention.1 Spooky, Bill Holman (1945) An example of a cut background program. The act of walking was blocked by the lose nail. Its background program ‘step-step-step’ did not complete its routine but the trace continues automatically. First as a long repetitive OOOPS! Then, when the cut is definite, followed by Grawlixes. Background programs are habits that tend towards mechanistic autonomous loops. Normally these have no significance for changes in the narrative and will not be visible in the cartoon. The automation of a habit is a consequence of divided attention. A skill that at the same time creates the absent-mindedness that prepares the situation for the unexpected cut that precedes the utterance of Grawlixes. When the completion of an automatic background program is suddenly blocked by an unexpected event, its trace enters the panel-frame in the form of simple iterating line-segments. Grawlixes are often defined as substitutes for cursing, but the previous zine argued that Grawlixes provided the structure for curses, and just like we are afraid because we tremble, and trembling is not always a sign of fear, curses are but one possible interpretation of Grawlixes, and Grawlixes do not necessary always end up in curses after a cut routine.2 Newton’s moment of insight.(le Journal d’Isaac Newton, Gotlib, 1983) Grawlixes appear where ‘the unpredictable’ challenges the concept of a deterministic universe This zine will show that Grawlixes are identical to some of the fundamental schematic patterns that are responsible for the structure of the cartoon itself. -

The Origins of the Magical Girl Genre Note: This First Chapter Is an Almost
The origins of the magical girl genre Note: this first chapter is an almost verbatim copy of the excellent introduction from the BESM: Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book by Mark C. MacKinnon et al. I took the liberty of changing a few names according to official translations and contemporary transliterations. It focuses on the traditional magical girls “for girls”, and ignores very very early works like Go Nagai's Cutie Honey, which essentially created a market more oriented towards the male audience; we shall deal with such things in the next chapter. Once upon a time, an American live-action sitcom called Bewitched, came to the Land of the Rising Sun... The magical girl genre has a rather long and important history in Japan. The magical girls of manga and Japanese animation (or anime) are a rather unique group of characters. They defy easy classification, and yet contain elements from many of the best loved fairy tales and children's stories throughout the world. Many countries have imported these stories for their children to enjoy (most notably France, Italy and Spain) but the traditional format of this particular genre of manga and anime still remains mostly unknown to much of the English-speaking world. The very first magical girl seen on television was created about fifty years ago. Mahoutsukai Sally (or “Sally the Witch”) began airing on Japanese television in 1966, in black and white. The first season of the show proved to be so popular that it was renewed for a second year, moving into the era of color television in 1967. -

En la Argentina, la década del noventa estuvo signada por un alto ingreso de capital privado al sistema de medios de comunicación masiva, lo que trajo aparejado un importante aumento de la oferta televisiva de diversos canales de cable con una programación de origen extranjero. Entre estos, surgieron algunos destinados únicamente a la animación, por lo que el anime — series animadas japonesas— empieza a hacerse dueño del nicho del mercado televisivo dirigido a niños/as y jóvenes, desplazando a las series clásicas de la industria estadounidense, como Superman. Dentro de este contexto, la productora nacional Pramer creó en 1995 el canal infantil/juvenil Magic Kids, que desde abril de 1996 empezó a emitir Sailor Moon, serie que, según indican Bellucci, Donaldson y Varnerin (2009), resultó ser parte de todo el primer estallido de popularidad del anime en la Argentina. Para Poitras (2001, citado en Goldenstein y Meo, 2011), la animación japonesa está dividida en géneros demográficos basados en la edad y el sexo de sus consumidores potenciales. Siguiendo esta clasificación, Bellucci, Donaldson y Varnerin sostienen que la serie animada Sailor Moon está ubicada dentro del género maho shojo —jóvenes mágicas—, por lo que es un anime dirigido a un público femenino joven donde las Sailor Scouts, grupo de protagonistas conformado por chicas adolescentes, pueden utilizar magia y transformarse en superheroínas con cuerpos adultos. -
