    www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Station and train surface microbiomes of Mexico City’s metro (subway/underground) Apolinar Misael Hernández1, Daniela Vargas-Robles1,2, Luis David Alcaraz3 & Mariana Peimbert 1 ✉ The metro is one of the more representative urban transportation systems of Mexico City, and it transports approximately 4.5 million commuters every day. Large crowds promote the exchange of microbes between humans. In this study, we determined the bacterial diversity profle of the Mexico City metro by massive sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. We identifed a total of 50,174 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and 1058 genera. The metro microbiome was dominated by the phylum Actinobacteria and by the genera Cutibacterium (15%) (C. acnes 13%), Corynebacterium (13%), Streptococcus (9%), and Staphylococcus (5%) (S. epidermidis; 4%), refecting the microbe composition of healthy human skin. The metro likely microbial sources were skin, dust, saliva, and vaginal, with no fecal contribution detected. A total of 420 bacterial genera were universal to the twelve metro lines tested, and those genera contributed to 99.10% of the abundance. The annual 1.6 billion ridership makes this public transport a main hub for microbe-host-environment interactions. Finally, this study shows that the microbial composition of the Mexico City metro comes from a mixture of environmental and human sources and that commuters are exposed to healthy composition of the human microbiota. Public transport systems provide the ideal environment for the transmission of microorganisms, as they carry a multitude of passengers, and their microbiomes, daily. Te metro can assemble an extensive repository of bene- fcial bacteria, such as commensals and symbionts, or harmful bacteria, becoming a vehicle for the transmission of infectious diseases.

En entrevista sostuvo que ocho años después de la gestión de Robles, el Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) aún no logra reponerse del daño económico y político que le hizo. ’No creo que Rosario Robles pueda dormir tranquila ni después de muerta, porque el daño que le ha hecho a nuestro partido es monumental, todavía no se acaba lo financiero, menos lo político”, sostuvo la actual dirigente perredista. Como parte de esa afectación señaló la relación “perversa” que Robles Berlanga sostuvo con el empresario de origen argentino Carlos Ahumada, pues además de utilizar recursos del partido para hacer negocios con él, le dio todo el poder para estar presente hasta en las decisiones del Comité Ejecutivo Nacional. “Rosario tomó recursos del partido para hacer negocios con una persona sin escrúpulos, esa fue la relación fugaz de ese personaje en estas oficinas. Hemos visto fotografías en las que hasta estaba en reuniones del propio Comité Ejecutivo Nacional, entraba hasta la cocina y esto era por la relación personal y de negocios que tenía Rosario Robles con esa persona”, mencionó. See the methodology. Overview Mexico has been an electoral democracy since 2000, and alternation in power between parties is routine at both the federal and state levels. However, the country suffers from severe rule of law deficits that limit full citizen enjoyment of political rights and civil liberties. Violence perpetrated by organized criminals, corruption among government officials, human rights abuses by both state and nonstate actors, and rampant impunity are among the most visible of Mexico’s many governance challenges. Key Developments in 2020 • With over 125,000 deaths and 1.4 million cases, people in Mexico were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The government initially hid the virus’s true toll from the public, and the actual numbers of cases and deaths caused by the coronavirus are unknown. • In July, authorities identified the bone fragments of one of the 43 missing Guerrero students, further undermining stories about the controversial case told by the Peña Nieto administration. • Also in July, former head of the state oil company PEMEX Emilio Lozoya was implicated in several multimillion-dollar graft schemes involving other high- ranking former officials. Extradited from Spain, he testified against his former bosses and peers, including former presidents Calderón and Peña Nieto. • In December, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) named Mexico the most dangerous country in the world for members of the media.

    Mexico Preelection assessment Legislative elections set for June 2021 Mexican citizens will take to the polls on June 6 to elect all 500 members of the Chamber of Deputies, as well as 15 governors and thousands of local positions. The vote is seen as a test of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s popularity and that of his National Regeneration Movement (MORENA). It will also determine whether he can retain control of the Chamber after his party secured a majority with the help of its coalition allies in the 2018 elections. The three main opposition parties, the National Action Party (PAN), the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), and the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), have formed an unlikely and ideologically incongruous alliance known as Go for Mexico (Va por México) in an effort to wrench the majority away from the current left-wing populist government. The 2018 election was seen as a repudiation of the incumbent political establishment and was marred by unprecedented levels of election-related violence, as well as allegations of illegal campaign financing, vote buying, and the misuse of public funds. Paired with budget cuts to the National Electoral Institute (INE) and accusations that Obrador’s government has sought to lessen electoral oversight and roll back government transparency, these issues raise concern about the administration of the upcoming election. The COVID-19 crisis has further complicated the electoral environment, as the country finds itself with the world’s third-highest death toll. Mismanagement of the pandemic response sparked antigovernment protests in the months leading up to the election, which were further fueled by a recent economic recession, record-high homicide rates, and dissatisfaction with Obrador’s public comments on gender-based violence.
