30 7 LEZANT FLORAL ART AND GARDEN GROUP Our September speaker was Tim Ellis who is a regular visitor to our group, speaking on a range of subjects. This time it was Euphorbias and Tim shared with us slides of the smallest ones to the largest, light colours to dark. Euphorbias belong to the spurge family of flowering plants and not all grow in the U.K. There are nearly 100 known varieties in the U.K. and Euphorbias belong to one of the biggest fami- lies in the world. This also includes the Poinsettias we buy at Christmas time. Tim’s passion for this flower came through as he showed us slides accompanied by their Latin names without any crib sheet. He told us that on a visit to Crete he was determined to find one which only grows there in the White Mountains; after a long, hot walk, he found it! Although they are mainly perennial plants, annuals are available. All plants grow better in gritty soil, preferably by a stone wall and they do not like rich soil. When cutting stems, be careful as the sap is poisonous if it comes into contact with your skin or you rub your eyes without washing your hands after handling the plant. Our November 20th. meeting will welcome back Chelsea Gold florist – Amanda Randell-Cox – who will be no doubt keeping us entertained with her stories of life as a florist (often very amusing), whilst putting together some amazing floral displays which, of course, will be raffled at the end of the evening. As always, an invitation is extended to anyone who would like the opportunity of seeing a top florist in action. The cost will be £2.00 for members and £3.00 for visitors plus £2 for a raffle ticket. Tea and biscuits included in the price. The Autumn/Winter talks will be advertised in the Parish magazine but this is just to give you prior notice of three very different speakers so you can make a note in your diaries! Refresh- ments are always served at the meeting and at the November meeting there is a chance to win one of Amanda’s superb arrangements in the raffle. Joint Secretaries – Rosemary Buckler and Shirleygh Ou

Lezant Women’s Institute The guest speaker at October’s meeting was Antony Blackler, MBE who together with his wife Cherry a retired nurse, runs a charity near Lezant, The Cornwall Nature Conservancy. Antony explained how he has always been interested in nature and how they came to their small holding in . Antony gave us a detailed description of the work and running of the conser- vancy. Together with the help of a number of loyal helpers and volunteers including Duchy col- lege students, Antony and Cherry are dedicated to the preservation of British species such as the Scottish Wild Cat (there are thought to be only 50 left in the wild) and otters but also members of the cat family from across the world. The conservancy breeds pumas, servals and ocelots as well as fishing cats but also acts as a rescue centre for other species such as Madagascan lemurs and tenrecs. As part of their global conservancy role, they swap animals with other breeding centres. Antony gave us many examples of success stories but also of course some of the sadder moments that are an inevitable part of their work. The Centre costs around £50000 per year and until its incorporation as a charity in 2015 was funded completely by Antony and Cherry. The conservancy never buys or sell the animals and needs more funds to continue its vital work, not only with the hope of returning animals to the wild but also helping to educate people on their plight. The Conservancy is not open to the public except by arrangement with Antony and Cherry Further information on the Conservancy can be found on their website: cornwallnatureconservancy.org.uk or email Antony at [email protected] November's meeting will be on Wednesday November 13th at 2.00 p.m. in the Lezant Church Room when the talk will be by Alan Endacott of Angel Stained Glass.
