This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Fri Oct 1 21:17:07 2021 / +0000 GMT Tigers split home-and-home with Spirit By Jake Courtepatte A four-point performance over the weekend has the Junior A Aurora Tigers pulling away from the competition in the OJHL's North division. A familiar name found the scoresheet three times in the Tigers' 4 ? 1 win over the struggling Stouffville Spirit on Thursday night, with Joseph Mizzi notching a natural hat trick before the end of the second period. Jack Varga notched the game's opener. Jack Irvine was back between the pipes at home at the Aurora Community Centre the following night after blocking 27 shots, showing some signs of fatigue in the Spirit's 4 ? 3 win. Inserted into the game after a slow start from Christian Filippetti, Irvine and the Tigers' fell behind 3 ? 1 midway through the second period on a bank from in close. Jacob Ball pulled the Tigers back within one on a second rebound early in the third period, though Irvine was fooled just minutes later on a long wrist shot that proved to be the game winner. Captain Steven MacLean capped off the scoring in the game's dying minutes. Sunday's road matchup had the Tigers meeting the new-look Brantford 99ers for the first time, moving to Brantford from their home in Milton as the Icehawks in the offseason. Peppering the Brantford goal with 24 shots in the first period, Aurora took a 3 ? 0 lead before the first buzzer thanks to Michael Palandra, MacKenzie Dobson, and a powerplay marker from Mizzi.

This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Wed Sep 29 18:46:30 2021 / +0000 GMT Tigers shake up roster with end of year moves By Jake Courtepatte The kings of the jungle are improving their pride. The top-ranked Aurora Tigers made a pair of roster moves over the holidays in an attempt to improve upon their five-point lead atop the Ontario Junior Hockey League's North division, including a surprise trade of top goaltender Jack Irvine. A one-for-one deal with the Mississauga Chargers last Friday saw the marathon man swapped for fellow tender Lucas Durante, a veteran of three seasons with the Chargers and a native of Brampton. Irvine, between the pipes for close to 1,400 minutes this season for the Tigers, saw his production drop as of late with losses in three of his last four games before being shipped to Mississauga. Durante saw action in 22 games with the Chargers this season, posting a .901 save percentage, before earning the win in his Tigers debut on December 21 against the Stouffville Spirit. Looking for redemption from a loss to the Spirit six days prior, the Tigers took to the ice at the Aurora Community Centre and got some surprise early help, with Mauro Biasutto potting his second goal of the year just over three minutes into the game. Durante was beaten for his first as a Tiger midway through the first period on an unfamiliar penalty kill system, though Joseph Mizzi put the Tigers up 2 ? 1 before the buzzer to bring his league-leading goal total to 25 on the year, one up on the Buffalo Jr.

This page was exported from - The Auroran Export date: Sat Oct 2 6:35:48 2021 / +0000 GMT Tigers clinch OJHL regular season title, face Newmarket in first round By Jake Courtepatte For the first time since 2006-07, the Aurora Tigers are back atop Ontario Junior A supremacy. The regular season champs clinched the title in spectacular fashion Friday night in a showdown between the best records in the OJHL, facing the Trenton Golden Hawks for the final road game of the season. Vince Figliomeni, stellar since moving to the Tigers from the Mississauga Chargers in early January, opened the scoring on the power play late in the first period. Cameron Morrison surpassed the 30-goal plateau in his rookie season by notching two in the second period to put the Tigers up 3 ? 0. Callum Fryer added another late in the frame in an eventual 4 ? 2 victory. Goaltender Andy Munroe was beaten twice on 23 shots, and the Tigers will be looking for his backstopping success to continue into the postseason. Figliomeni finished his season on a point-per-game pace for the Tigers, potting five goals and ten assists in fifteen games. The Tigers wrapped up the season at home on Saturday, the occasion marked by a celebration of the life of Judy Sherin, a proud and supporting fan, who passed away last summer. Aurora brought the momentum of their 13-game winning streak back to home ice, adding two more points to their record in a 2 ? 1 win over the Oakville Blades. Fryer and captain Michael Laidley had the goals for the Tigers.
