Poor Ronnie

By RON WALLACE From whence came the bell? Far be it for me to start another rumour, but, hey, do you see any similarity between the bell in the photo to the right and the one below? They do look the same, so the question is, is the bell below from the locomotive “Toronto”, (actually it was official- ly known as the Toronto #2 locomotive) which hauled the first train into Machell’s Corners (Aurora) in 1853? I don’t think it is, at least I didn’t until I came across the picture that appears to the right of this column. And, by the way, the officlal name of the railway was the Ontario, Simcoe & Huron. Granted, the picture is only a model of the locomotive, but the bell certainly looks familiar. Nevertheless, I tend to agree with former museum curator Jackie Stuart, who said in a letter to the editor a couple of years ago, that few people would be thinking about saving the bell when the locomotive was taken apart. In 1963, the bell was “gifted” to the community of Aurora. The above photograph, taken by Canadian National Railways, shows a model of the locomotive It was located at the old Aurora Library, also a gift to the “Toronto”. So what, you say. The “Toronto” was the locomotive that brought the first train out of Toronto town, and it remained there until a month or so ago. in 1853. And where did it go? To Aurora, of course...where else? As part of the Simcoe and Huron Former Auroran columnist, the late Dick Illingworth, was Railway, the train came to Aurora more than a century and a half ago, in a trip that took hours. But it’s forever saying the bell should be moved to the railway station, the bell on this model that caught our eye. Was it from the “Toronto”? Unlikely. But go look for yourself and he said, and both happened. see if it looks a whole lot like the bell (arrow) in the above photograph. If you stick your arm under the bell, you can make it ring. But it’s unlikely the bell came from the original “Toronto” locomotive because, as Jackie says, who would be thinking Letters to the Editor about saving the accessory only 30 years after it had made its historic voyage to Aurora.
