Sunt 45 de ani de când maestrul Mihail Jora (1891-1971) a plecat din această lume şi 37 de ani de la dispariţia Didiei Saint Georges (1888-1979)1. Un pachet cu 18 scrisori şi două tăieturi de ziar au traversat deceniile pentru a ajunge în sfârşit, în lumina publică. Pe lângă originile moldovene comune, pe corespondenţi îi leagă câteva coordonate ale destinului. Dotaţi amândoi cu vocaţie muzicală, 1 Didia Saint Georges a fost pianistă şi compozitoare (1888, Botoşani – 1979, Bucureşti). A studiat la Conservatorul din Iaşi între 1905 -1907 şi la Conservatorul din Leipzig între 1907 – 1910 cu Robert Teichmüller -pianul, cu Emil Paul - armonia şi contrapunctul, cu Stephan Krell - compoziţia. A concertat ca solistă şi ca parteneră în recitaluri camerale, de lied etc. A primit Menţiune la Premiul de compoziţie George Enescu (1929) pentru Variaţiuni pe un cântec evreiesc; Menţiunea I la Premiul de compoziţie George Enescu (1930) pentru Suita De la musique avant toute chose; Menţiunea I onorifică la Premiul de compoziţie George Enescu (1943) pentru Sonatina pentru pian. A fost membră a Societăţii Compozitorilor Români din anul 1929. Lisette Georgescu, prietena lor comună, o evocă astfel în articolul său In memoriam Mihail Jora: ”Didia Saint Georges, compozitoare de talent,…dar care nu s-a dedicat serios compoziţiei, cu tot talentul ei rămânând la mijloc de drum. I put this book here for you, who once lived So that you should visit us no more Czeslaw Milosz Introduction* Holocaust denial in post-Communist East Central Europe is a fact. And, like most facts, its shades are many. Sometimes, denial comes in explicit forms – visible and universally-aggressive. At other times, however, it is implicit rather than explicit, particularistic rather than universal, defensive rather than aggressive. And between these two poles, the spectrum is large enough to allow for a large variety of forms, some of which may escape the eye of all but the most versatile connoisseurs of country-specific history, culture, or immediate political environment. In other words, Holocaust denial in the region ranges from sheer emulation of negationism elsewhere in the world to regional-specific forms of collective defense of national "historic memory" and to merely banal, indeed sometime cynical, attempts at the utilitarian exploitation of an immediate political context.1 The paradox of Holocaust negation in East Central Europe is that, alas, this is neither "good" nor "bad" for the Jews.2 But it is an important part of the * I would like to acknowledge the support of the J. and O. The Politics of Estrangement: Tracking Shklovsky’s Device through Literary and Policing Practices Cristina Vatulescu Society of Fellows, Harvard Abstract Critics have frequently accused Russian Formalism of supporting an apo- litical separation of art from life. As a central Formalist term, estrangement (ostranenie) often bore the brunt of this accusation. Taking issue with this critique, this essay focuses on the entangled relationship betweentheaestheticsandpoliticsofestrange- ment and argues that an attentive look at the history of estrangement reveals its deep involvement with revolutionary and police state politics. This essay traces estrange- ment’s conflicted development through Victor Shklovsky’s oeuvre and beyond, in the work of Nicolae Steinhardt and Joseph Brodsky, and also in secret police interroga- tion and reeducation practices and in CIA manuals. In Sentimental Journey, Shklovsky wrote that during the civil war, life itself was made strange and became art. Shklovsky’s memoirs shed light on the effects of this revolu- tionary estrangement on the self. Furthermore, the memoirs reenacted this unsettling estrangement by incorporating elements of official Soviet genres, such as the trial deposition, the interrogation autobiography, and the letter to the government. Astfel s-a născut, sub auspiciile întâlnirii dintre jocul secund barbian şi blagiana geometrie înaltă şi sfântă, prima ediţie a Colocviului studenţesc de literatură română al studenţilor Facultăţii de Litere, Istorie şi Teologie din cadrul Universităţii de Vest din Timişoara. Barbu – Blaga 50 (23 aprilie 2011) a fost urmat de Caragiale 100 (8 mai 2012), reunind douăzeci de perechi de „ochi pricepuţi” care au reuşit să reînvie, prin lectura lor comprehensivă, opera inepuizabilă a lui I. L. Caragiale. Spectacolul de inteligenţă analitică şi intuiţie hermeneutică a fost continuat prin colocviile Nichita Stănescu, azi (29 mai 2013) şi Fundoianu – Fondane 70 (31 mai 2014), iar a cincea ediţie, Gellu Naum 100, e deja în pregătire. S-a creat, aşadar, o continuitate a exerciţiului critic, prin înlănţuirea unor simpozioane anuale, care îşi aleg (doar!) ca punct de plecare fortuitele aniversări, evitând orice derapaj festivist-encomiastic şi stimulând reîntoarcerea la texte, prin lecturi ingenioase şi lucide, avansând interpretări inedite şi, totodată, temeinic argumentate. -

Eliot [Asia in Europe IV] This contribution in three parts analyses for the first time Ion Pillat’s Buddhist poetry of his debut volume (Visări budiste [Buddhist Reveries] from Visări păgâne [Pagan Reveries] (Bucharest: «Minerva» – Institut de Arte Grafice și Editură, 1912) compared against plausible European and Asian religious and literary sources, contexts, and significance, in order to palliate the callous non-sense of some literary critics and the cultural prejudice inflicted by some scholars of religion. The five poems – A Buddhist Prayer (a title subsequently changed to A Prayer to the Buddha), Samsara [saṃsāra], Towards Nirvana, Karman and A Hymn of Worship – are illustrative of the wider topics and literary moves of an ‘Asian Renaissance’, and highlight the Buddhist legacy of Eugène Burnouf (1801-1852), a professor of the Collège de France who would become the founding father of modern Buddhist Studies worldwide and whose Magna Carta of Buddhist Studies would also have a Romanian echo, from Odobescu (who moreover frequented his classes) to Eminescu (who authored more and better Buddhist cantos) or Georgian (the first to critically edit Sanskrit texts) to young Pillat, a schoolboy, then student in Paris since 1905, to become the first translator into Romanian of another pupil of Sanskrit India in Paris and Harvard in the 1910-1914, T. -

Photographs…………….……………………………………………………...42 1 Global Electoral Organization (GEO) Conference March 27-29, 2007 – Washington, DC EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Among the many challenges confronting democratic nations, ensuring citizens’ right to free, fair and transparent elections ranks especially high. In election commissions around the world, talented and committed professionals often find themselves with limited access to a network of peers they can consult for professional advice. The conferences of the Global Electoral Organization (GEO) regularly provide senior election officials and democracy practitioners a much needed opportunity to gather together in person and share common experiences and find solutions to issues in election management. IFES, an international nonprofit organization that supports the building of democratic societies, hosted the fourth gathering of the GEO network at the Westin Grand in Washington, D.C., from March 27–29, 2007. This year’s GEO conference also received support from 11 other leading international and government organizations and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Attendees at this year’s GEO conference included more than 250 international electoral systems experts, representatives from national and regional electoral management bodies, universities, and the diplomatic and donor communities from over 50 countries. This final report highlights the extent to which the 2007 GEO Conference met various conference objectives set by the host, IFES.
