FEEST VAN DE BELGISCHE JAZZ ZATERDAG 8 OKTOBER 2016 In februari 2012 sloegen het Concertgebouw en De Werf de handen in elkaar voor een eerste W.E.R.F.- Labelnight. Deze eerste editie huldigde niet alleen 100 releases op het Brugse label, maar vierde even- eens het tienjarige jubileum van het Concertgebouw. De formule bleek een schot in de roos en een ver- volg kon dan ook niet uitblijven! Vandaag draait het W.E.R.F.-label nog steeds op volle toeren en stevent het af op 150 titels. Wat oorspronkelijk startte in 1993 als een eenmalige ondersteuning aan de Brugse pianist Kris Defoort, groeide uit tot wellicht het belangrijkste jazzlabel in Vlaanderen. De oneindige lijst aan jazzmuzikanten die reeds voor het label opnamen, leest als een encyclopedie van de Belgische 18:00 KRIS DEFOORT’S DIVING POET SOCIETY CONCERTZAAL jazzgeschiedenis van de afgelopen 25 jaar. Doorheen de jaren groeiden dan ook heel wat artiesten met JAZZCONCERTEN IN DE WERF NAJAAR 2016 ROBIN VERHEYEN QUARTET het label uit tot gevestigde waarden in het circuit. Voor deze tweede Labelnight selecteerden we zowel jonge leeuwen als vertrouwde gezichten. SHOTGUN was inspired by a book by RKR- CB (also called SHOTGUN to be released April 20, 2012) which is a curious mix of images of the Marigny and Bywater neighborhoods juxtaposed with edgy graphic art and an eclectic short story. Known throughout New Orleans and the world as a keyboard player, Bob Andrews instead plays guitar on all tracks of SHOTGUN for a new sound that reflects a merging of Bob’s British rock and R&B roots with New Orleans funk and blues. The songs are fresh, edgy, and innovative. The music and the intriguing lyrics capture the energy of New Orleans with sultry and vivid flavors of lust and love in a rollicking zest for life. SHOTGUN brings together diverse and talented musicians including Alex McMurray, Johnny Sansone, Cornell Williams, Jermal Watson, Calvin Johnson, and Red Priest. SHOTGUN was recorded at Piety Street Recording by Wes Fontenot and mixed by John Porter. Development of the SHOTGUN CD was partially supported through a grant from the Threadhead Cultural Foundation. SHOTGUN is the first in a series of collaborative projects by RKR-CB to promote New Orleans musicians in tandem with a companion book. The next RKR- CB book/CD project, “INVISIBLE LOVE” will be released later in 2012. -

Beschouwing Mik Torfs Frederik Goossens stafmedewerker JazzLab Series, journalist DE SCHOUDERS ONDER DE BELGISCHE JAZZ 1 15 jaar JazzLab Series, een geschiedenis In 1986 begon De Werf in Brugge op regelmatige basis internationale jazzconcerten te organiseren. Het initiatief was ontstaan uit de samenwerking van De Werf met vzw Take Five, de vereniging achter de concerten in het Brugse jazzcafé De Versteende Nacht. Daniël Dehulster zette daar samen met Willy Schuyten de schouders onder de jazz. Hoewel ze een opmerkelijke programmatie realiseerden, had het café zowel financieel als logistiek zijn beperkingen. In het nieuwe kunstencentrum De Werf, een initiatief van Rik Bevernage, vonden beide liefhebbers een enthousiaste partner met meer middelen. In eerste instantie werd er voor trefzekere namen gekozen. Een blik op de muzikanten die in die jaren door De Werf werden uitgenodigd, leest als een ‘who’s who’ van de jazz; Don Pullen, David Murray, Dewey Redman, Cassandra Wil- son, Mal Waldron, Anthony Braxton, Wynton Marsalis, Betty Carter, Charlie Haden, Henry Threadgill, Archie Shepp,… passeerden er allemaal de revue. De Vlaamse jazzscène was in die tijden versplinterd. Er waren te weinig artiesten die de muziek een opwindende impuls konden geven. Er werd wel links en rechts in clubs gejamd, maar het amusement was vaak groter dan het niveau van de gespeelde mu- ziek. Wallonië stond er beter voor. Tien jaar eerder was Les lundis d’Hortense ont- staan als een collectief van jazzmuzikanten, om een tegengewicht te kunnen vormen tegenover de geïnstitutionaliseerde klassieke muziek. Michel Herr, Bruno Castellucci, Richard Rousselet, Marc Moulin en anderen verenigden zich en organiseerden evene- menten ter promotie van hun muziek. -

Nata ad Hampstead nel 1946, inizia la sua carriera come regina della swinging London con il brano "As Tears Go By", prima canzone composta insieme da Mick Jagger e Keith Richards. La sua ANDREA LECCARDI carriera musicale nei Sixties procede in parallelo con quella cinematografica (con il film "Girl on a motorcycle") e teatrale (con "Le tre sorelle" di Cechov e "Amleto"). Dopo un periodo di pausa dalla fine degli anni '60 alla seconda metà dei '70, Marianne ritorna sulla scena nel 1979 con "Broken English", dimostrando di essere al passo con le nuove tendenze della nascente new wave. Dopo i successivi "Dangerous Acquaintances" (1981) e "A child's adventure" (1983), Marianne Faithfull [email protected] pubblica nel 1987 "Strange Weather", una raccolta di classici pop e blues SPETTACOLINEWS.IT da lei reinterpretati. Marianne intraprende nuove direzioni con "Secret Life" del 1995, scritto con la collaborazione del compositore italiano Angelo Badalamenti, e con la rilettura dell'opera teatrale "The seven deadly sins" di Kurt Weill e Bertolt Brecht (1998). L'artista ritorna su binari più mainstream realizzando nel 1999 uno dei suoi album più apprezzati, "Vagabond Ways", mentre, con il nuovo millennio, entra in una fase di rinnovato vigore creativo della sua carriera di attrice con i film "Intimacy" (2001), "Marie Antoinette" (2006), e, grazie al ruolo da protagonista nell'acclamato "Irina Palm" (2006), ottiene una nomination agli European Film Academy. -

Nell’arco di 47 anni si è evoluta, passando dall’immagine dell’ingenua cantante dalla voce tremula del suo album di debutto ‘As Tears Go By’ (1964, la prima canzone in assoluto scritta da Mick Jagger e Keith Richards) fino a divenire l’icona dal timbro struggente e cantautrice dalla forte carica emotiva, come riconferma ancora oggi in occasione del suo 23esimo album solista, l'incredibile ‘Horses And High Heels’. Registrato a New Orleans con una cerchia di musicisti locali d’eccezione, l’album contiene otto cover e quattro nuove canzoni originali co-firmate da Marianne, quattro tracce in cui è presente il virtuoso della chitarra John Porter, un musicista/produttore noto soprattutto per le sue collaborazioni con Roxy Music, Eric Clapton e The Smiths. L’album comprende inoltre un brano con testi scritti appositamente per lei dal drammaturgo irlandese Frank McGuiness (l’evocativa ‘The Old House’), due contributi alla chitarra di un altro amico di vecchia data, Lou Reed, oltre ad altre partecipazioni di Dr. John e Wayne Kramer degli MC5. La produzione è firmata dal collaboratore storico Hal Willner, l’alchimista dei paesaggi sonori nell’acclamato ‘Easy Come, Easy Go’ (2009); la sua superba collezione di cover e duetti vede la presenza di altri colleghi artisti, da Keith Richards e Jarvis Cocker, a Rufus Wainwright e Nick Cave. -
