Define ‘resented’. To have felt bitterness or indignation at a circumstance, an action, or a person

What is spontaneous combustion? A situation in which something suddenly starts to burn without any obvious cause

What does usurp mean? To take the position of someone powerful or importance illegally or by force

What does it mean to dwell on something? To think, speak, or write a lot about a particular subject

Why was Percy feeling miserable? This is because he was all alone in cabin three with no one to talk or listen to

Why does Luke have to have one on one sessions with Percy? This is because all the others are too scared of his powers.

What impression do you think Gabe gave the police and reporters? He gave the impression that Percy was a troublemaker with a violent streak and had most likely caused the accident killing himself and his mother.

Why does Grover cross his fingers? This is because he hopes Percy will accept the quest and take him along so that he can get a searcher’s license.

Why is everyone stunned at the rain? This is because it never rains in Camp Half- Blood unless they want it to.

Why didn’t Percy tell Grover the whole of the prophecy? This is because he didn’t want Chiron to lose faith in him by telling Chiron that he would fail.

Why can’t Percy fly? This is because is the Lord of the Sky and if Percy entered Zeus’s domain, he wouldn't come out alive.

Predict

Predict what the quest will be. The quest will be to get back Zeus’ master bolt from the Underworld and return it to Zeus, thereby clearing ’s name.

Predict what Mr D wants with Percy. Mr D wants Percy to accept the quest and complete it successfully so that there is no war between Zeus and Poseidon, which would cause massive and destruction in the world.

Predict what will happen when Percy sees the Oracle. She will tell him that it his destiny to get back Zeus’s stolen master bolt.

Explain

Explain the effect of having a mysterious prophecy as part of the story. The effect is that it creates a sense of adventure and mystery for the reader who wants to accompany Percy on his quest and see him complete the mission.

Why doesn’t Percy know how to feel when he realises his dad needs him? This is because he has never seen his dad ever and never felt his dad’s love or acceptance towards himself.

Why did Percy have a cabin to himself? This is because he was the only half-blood in the camp, who was the son of Poseidon.

What does Percy dream about? It was about two muscular men with long white beards and flowing Greek tunics wrestling with each other on the beach.

How did Percy figure out that Poseidon and Zeus were fighting? This is because weather since Christmas had been weird like as if the sea and the sky were fighting.

What has been stolen? Zeus’s master bolt

What does the Oracle look like? How did Percy feel looking at her? The oracle looks like the mummy of a human female body with leathery skin, marble eyes and a headband over long black hair. She wore a tie-dyed sundress with lots of beaded necklaces. Looking at her made Percy feel scared and horrified.

What is the prophecy from the Oracle? That he must go west and face the God that has stolen the master bolt, return it back safely, but then be betrayed by a friend and lose what matter most to him.

Who does Chiron believe has the master bolt? Why? Chiron believes has the master bolt because Hades has been unhappy ever since the world was divided amongst the three brothers. Also, in a war between Zeus and Poseidon, millions would die thereby making Hades even more powerful as he is the God of the Underworld.

Why can’t Poseidon or Zeus check if the master bolt is in the underworld? This is because Gods cannot cross each other’s territories except by invitation.

Who is going on the quest? Percy, Grover and Annabeth

Summarise

Summarise why Percy needs to go on the quest in less than 50 words. Percy needs to go on the quest so that he can retrieve the master bolt and return it to Zeus successfully so that there is no war between Zeus and Poseidon, which would cause massive chaos and destruction in the world.

Vocabulary

What is hyperventilating? Breathing at an abnormally rapid rate possibly due to overexcitement

What is an illusion? Something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality.

Define melancholy. A feeling of sadness or sorrow

Why were the other passengers ‘wandering around in a daze’? This is because they were confused about the experience they had just been through and didn’t know how to react.

Infer

Why do you think Percy left the horn behind? I think this is because he wanted to travel with the least possible things and also because he didn’t want other monsters to figure out who he was.

Why did Annabeth look like she might pass out? This might be because Luke had just hugged her and she had feelings for him.

Why can’t Percy use the shoes? This is because if he starts to fly with the shoes then Zeus might capture him as he would be in Zeus’s domain.

What is the pen? The pen is a magical sword gifted to Chiron by Poseidon.

Why doesn’t Annabeth think her and Percy should get on? This is because their parents, and Poseidon, were known to be enemies of each other.

Why did Percy’s mum marry Gabe? This is because Gabe reeked of a strong human smell that would help to hide Percy’s smell from the monsters that could sniff hald- bloods.

What is Percy’s real aim on his quest? Percy’s real aim is to get his mother back from the Underworld.

Why does Percy swerve the bus? This is so he could save Annabeth and Grover from being hurt by the three Furies.

Predict

Predict how the bus will get ruined. The bus will be burnt in the flames.

Predict what will happen when the Furies get on the bus. They will attack Percy as one of them recognised who he was.

Explain

Do you think Percy was right to swerve the bus? Why? Yes he was because otherwise the Furies might have overpowered Annabeth and Grover and possibly killed them.

What two songs does Grover know on the pipes? Mozart’s Piano Concerto no.12 and Hilary Duff’s “So Yesterday”

What does Luke give to Percy? Why? A pair of magical sneakers that could make the wearer fly. He gave them so Percy could use their magical powers to defeat a monster in battle and fulfill his quest.

Who is driving them into the city? Argus

What is the name of the sword? Riptide

What happens if Percy loses the pen? It magically reappears in his pocket.

Who gets on the bus? The three Furies

How does Percy hide from the Furies? He puts on Annabeth’s magical cap and becomes invisible.

Why do the Furies begin to scream? They began to scream because they couldn't see Percy anymore.
