EPINICIAN PRECEPTS: A STUDY OF CHIRON AND THE WISE ADVISER IN PINDAR ABSTRACT This thesis offers a fresh appraisal of the wise adviser in Pindar's epinician poetry. By focusing on the prominent figure of Chiron, it shows how Pindar engages with the paraenetic tradition in a way that reveals the distinctive character of the epinician poet. The first part of the study explores the function of Chiron as an interactive model for Pindar as poet-teacher. Chapter 1 examines how the mythical pedagogue enhances the status of the poet as wise adviser by illuminating the moral character of his advice. It shows how the relationship between teacher and pupil in the myth provides a model for that of poet and addressee and enables the poet to present his advice indirectly. In two separate case studies, I explore how Chiron's paradigmatic associations interact with the poet as adviser. In Chapter 2 (Nemean 3), I argue that the poet dramatises the instruction of a pupil as part of a collaborative and interactive form of learning. In Chapter 3 (Pythian 3), I argue that Pindar reconfigures preceptual instruction in a 'dialogue' between two speakers who enact the pedagogic relationship of Chiron and Asclepius. This strategy allows the poet to present his teaching tactfully and authoritatively. I conclude that Chiron is a figure for the poet as tactful and authoritative adviser and contributes to the poet's creation of a 'paraenetic encomium'. Secondly, this study of the reception and remodelling of the paraenetic tradition in Pindar illuminates the distinctive character of his advice and its central importance in Pindar's construction of poetic and moral authority. i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have at times in the course of this demanding study felt like the 'shadowy' man of Nemean 3.41, shifting my purpose and not always taking a precise step, whilst being thrown off course by ever- changing winds of the imagination. The recent International Conference on Epinician (June, 2006), organised by my colleagues at the University of London, Peter Agocs and Richard Rawles, furnished me with the opportunity to work up some of my ideas on Nemean 3 for a public audience. My understanding of Pindar was enriched by a broad range of papers from many leading Pindarists, which spurred me on to pass the turning post and reach the homeward stretch. Alan Griffiths kindly let me have a detailed look at his paper, which went some way to solving the 'riddle of Oedipus' in Pythian 4 and Adrian Kelly gave generously of his time to challenge my thinking about Pindar. I would like to express my appreciation to the University of Birmingham for a travel grant that enabled me to attend a conference in honour of Pindar held on the Pnyx in June 2004. This coincided with the return of the Olympic Games to Athens for the first time since its modern reincarnation in 1896. The speakers included Professors Christopher Carey and Robert Fowler. Afterwards, Kostas Kakavelakis kindly sent me a volume of unpublished conference papers. Guestfriendship on an international scale, I am pleased to say, is truly alive in modern Greece! I note with considerable gratitude the generous contribution of my parents towards maintenance and university fees in all but one year of my course. Though no technophile himself, my father appreciates the importance of good tools and was prepared to relieve me of old printers and computer monitors, thus enabling me to upgrade to new equipment. My mother's particular bugbear, the prospective remark, means there will be fewer instances of "as I hope to show", or "as we will see later" than there would otherwise have been. My final debt is to my beloved wife Emma, without whom this project would have foundered. I recall that our first meeting in Cardiff in April 2000, occurred soon after I had completed my Master of Philosophy degree when the road ahead had at least two possible turnings. At that time, I was honing a different form of 'ex-tempore composition' in the Jazz Attic, which I can assure you, is no fiction or conceit.     The Bipolar Longings of Thumos: A Feminist Rereading of Plato's Republic CHRISTINA TARNOPOLSKY, McGill University Plato's treatment of thumos in the Republic might seem like an odd place to look for mining fresh feminist insights into the complex and political character of human desire. 1 The dialogue itself is often seen as one in which human desire is down played in favor of the godlike and self-sufficient philosopher-kings who are quite unlike the erotic, needy, and striving Socrates of Plato's Symposium (Bloom 1968, 423; Williams 1993, 98-102). For this very reason, feminists have usually looked to the latter dialogue in order to derive a notion of classical desire, either from the Aristophanic notion of eros as a striving for one's better half or from Diotima's notion of eros as a striving for wholeness and as the desire to give birth to a new self in the presence of the beloved. More pro­ blematically, Plato's treatment of thumos in the Republic has primarily been co-opted by conservative, anti-feminist thinkers who see it as the manly and warlike passion of anger or spiritedness that animates men's souls (Berns 1984, 335-348; Bloom 1968, 355, 376). Even commenta­ tors who do not share these kinds of political views tend to see Platonic thumos as that element of the soul which counters desire or eros be­ cause it counters those desires that are lodged in the epithumetic (appetitive/desiring) part of the soul (Koziak 2000, 75, 77; Allen 2000b, 252).2 In this paper I hope to challenge all of these views of the Republic by looking at the complex bipolar longings that characterize Plato's notion of thumos.

Published by: The Department of Historical Studies, University of Toronto Mississauga Stable URL: http://jps.library.utoronto.ca/index.php/prandium/article/view/25694 2 The Religion in Medicine: an exploration of healing through the examination of Asclepius and the Epidaurian Iamata By Ongelle‐Lise Burnett1 For many Ancient Greeks, Asclepius was the god usually sought after to assist in the recovery process.2 As the evidence presented in the Epidaurian inscriptions indicate, patients praised Asclepius because he not only answered their prayer requests in a timely manner, but also cured their diseases, typically, in one nightly visit.3 His healing‐cult, dedicated to “curative and protective powers,” created a different, yet acceptable, form of worship that spread from existing shrines in Tricca, Epidaurus, Athens and the Piraeus to the Aegan, Asia Minor and Egypt.4 This paper will use examples from the Asclepieion sanctuary at Epidaurus, which welcomed patients from different parts of ancient Greece. This sanctuary was special because patients participated in an incubation practice where dreaming allowed the god(s) to heal and give advice on further courses of action.5 Thus, at Epidaurus, a patient found counsel and prophecies through a different form of healing: nightly dream‐filled visions.6 This paper explores the belief of the people in Asclepius, through the examination of the iamata (the erected physical testimonies of healings) and the events at Epidaurus.

Now, Cronos had become king of the gods by killing his father Oranos, the First One, and the dying Oranos had prophesied, saying, “You murder me now, and steal my throne — but one of your own Sons twill dethrone you, for crime begets crime.” So Cronos was very careful. One by one, he swallowed his children as they were born; First, three daughters Hestia, Demeter, and Hera; then two sons — Hades and Poseidon. One by one, he swallowed them all. Rhea was furious. She was determined that he should not eat her next child who she felt sure would he a son. When her time came, she crept down the slope of Olympus to a dark place to have her baby. It was a son, and she named him Zeus. She hung a golden cradle from the branches of an olive tree, and put him to sleep there. Then she went back to the top of the mountain. She took a rock and wrapped it in swaddling clothes and held it to her breast, humming a lullaby. Cronos came snorting and bellowing out of his great bed, snatched the bundle from her, and swallowed it, clothes and all. Rhea stole down the mountainside to the swinging golden cradle, and took her son down into the fields. She gave him to a shepherd family to raise, promising that their sheep would never be eaten by wolves. Here Zeus grew to be a beautiful young boy, and Cronos, his father, knew nothing about him.

Clytemnestra: Ah, wise the teacher, and wise still the entruster. Euripides’s Iphigenia at Aulis (Cameron, 2009, p. 15) Chiron-the-centaur emerged from the Greek mythology as “the archetypal teacher” (Cameron, 2009, p. 18) esteemed for his education precepts and successes in preparing for future greatness gods and heroes like Achilles, with curricula that included music, medicine, literacy, hunting, and athletics. This project contemporizes the image of Chiron for today’s educator audience, taking its cue from education iconics as an inquiry into “the visual expression of [historical] educational themes” (University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development, n.d.). New iconography of Chiron is offered in the form of a photo album “capturing” the scenes of Achilles’ education by Chiron, which are staged in Lego and informed by the Achilles silver plate from the Kaiseraugst Treasure. Lego was chosen as a contemporary design material associated with levity, creativity, and learning and came from the old sets belonging to the author’s children.     Constellation Legends by Norm McCarter Naturalist and Astronomy Intern SCICON Andromeda – The Chained Lady Cassiopeia, Andromeda’s mother, boasted that she was the most beautiful woman in the world, even more beautiful than the gods. Poseidon, the brother of Zeus and the god of the seas, took great offense at this statement, for he had created the most beautiful beings ever in the form of his sea nymphs. In his anger, he created a great sea monster, Cetus (pictured as a whale) to ravage the seas and sea coast. Since Cassiopeia would not recant her claim of beauty, it was decreed that she must sacrifice her only daughter, the beautiful Andromeda, to this sea monster. So Andromeda was chained to a large rock projecting out into the sea and was left there to await the arrival of the great sea monster Cetus. As Cetus approached Andromeda, Perseus arrived (some say on the winged sandals given to him by Hermes). He had just killed the gorgon Medusa and was carrying her severed head in a special bag. When Perseus saw the beautiful maiden in distress, like a true champion he went to her aid. Facing the terrible sea monster, he drew the head of Medusa from the bag and held it so that the sea monster would see it. Immediately, the sea monster turned to stone. Perseus then freed the beautiful Andromeda and, claiming her as his bride, took her home with him as his queen to rule. Aquarius – The Water Bearer The name most often associated with the constellation Aquarius is that of Ganymede, son of Tros, King of Troy.
