Tall Adventures Summer 2009 Summer Book online www.tallships.org New for 2009 Easy Payment Plan, see Easy Payment page 34 for more details A New Experience for all Ages

Dear Supporter,

Welcome to our new ‘credit-crunch-beating’ 2009 summer brochure. Put the kettle on, settle back in a comfortable chair, enjoy the read and plan your next sailing adventure.

New Brochure Layout The summer schedule is busier than ever with opportunities for all ages on both our magnificent Stavros S Niarchos and our Challenger Fleet. We hope the brochure’s new layout will make it easier to navigate through the array of different types of voyages. We’ve split it into sections, so whether you’re 14 or 64 there’s a section just for you. The information section has also been much improved to make it more informative and easier to read.

New Voyage Grading System We’ve also introduced a new voyage grading system. This explains what you can expect from each voyage. From one , for a day sail where no experience is necessary to a five for the Fastnet Race where some sailing experience is required for this full-on racing event. If you’re not sure if a voyage is suitable for you, then don’t hesitate to call our reservations team who can give you all the advice you need.

New Easy Payment Scheme New in 2009 is a great new way to pay for your voyage, as we introducing our Easy Payment Plan – by booking at least three months in advance you can split your payment into four easy payments (see page 34 for details). As always our reservations team will be pleased to help arrange an easy payment plan for you. Just give them a call.

Finally, I hope you are able to book on a voyage this summer but if you can’t get away with us this year, please pass this brochure on to a friend, tell them about Tall Ships Adventures and point them in the direction of our website.

Once again thank you for all your support.

Have a great summer and good sailing.

Introduction to sailing on a Brig or Yacht. You will learn the basics of seamanship and get involved with all aspects of life on board. A great experience that should leave you wanting to come back for more. Ideal as a gift for a loved one or friend. No sailing experience necessary.

4 To book your voyage call now 023 9283 2055 | www.tallships.org Useful information

Voyage will include sleeping on board and working in a ‘watch’ system. May visit a foreign port (if voyage starts in the UK). A great way to build on your time on board and work on your seamanship skills. A good stepping stone before going off shore for an extended period. No sailing experience necessary.

These voyages are a little more adventurous. You are likely to encounter bigger seas and stronger winds. You will also find these voyages slightly more physically demanding due to the combination of conditions and voyage length. Still no sailing experience necessary.

Sailing off shore, out of sight of land is an incredible experience. You will be sailing the Brig or Yacht in a watch system for an extended time which will mean hard physical work and the likelihood of a change of your sleep pattern. A great way to get some miles under your belt. Some sailing experience is helpful but not essential.

Primary purpose of the voyage is to race. This will be an exhilarating experience likely to push you physically. As well as improving your sailing knowledge, you will also learn about racing a large yacht. Some sailing experience is required for these voyages. What to Expect As the UK’s largest sail training charity we are experts at teaching people who are young and young at heart all about life on board our fleet. As sail trainers we presume you know nothing and teach you all you need to know. ■ You join the voyage as ‘Voyage Crew’ and get involved with all aspects of sailing the Brig or Challenger. ■ Some overnight voyages will plan to visit a foreign port – so you’ll need your passport. ■ The voyage itinerary will be decided by the Captain or Skipper depending on the weather and other factors to ensure as much sailing as possible. Your joining and leaving ports will only change if absolutely necessary and you will be informed of any change as soon as possible. ■ You will be encouraged to participate as much as possible but we won’t make you do anything that you don’t want to do. However, we do expect everyone to take their turn in ‘Happy Hour’ which is cleaning your ship or yacht. ■ The Voyage Crew will be divided into watches (groups) and under the guidance of your watch leader you will help sail your vessel. Crew structure and becoming a volunteer You will join as Voyage Crew which means you become part of the ‘team’ onboard who help with all aspects of life while at sea. You will be supported by a combination of salaried crew and volunteers. If you have joined a voyage of five days or more you may be assessed to see if you possess the skills to join us as a volunteer – this will be by being recommended at the end of your voyage. If you are recommended you will be able to join voyages as a volunteer to support the next generation of Voyage Crew that sails with us. Where will you go during the voyage? You will find where each voyage starts and finishes in the programme and suggestions of where some of the voyages might visit. However, it is impossible to guarantee where you will go during the voyage as this is very dependant on the weather and other factors. Your Captain or Skipper will keep you up to date with where you are likely to head to during your voyage. We will always endeavour to get in as much sailing as possible while you are on board. Tall Ships Spirit A Tall Ships Adventure is not a holiday in the usual sense of the word – it’s a unique ‘hands-on experience’. You will become an important part of the vessel’s crew and this is more than just the sailing – it will include food preparation, maintenance and cleaning. You’ll work as a team while on board but it’s still likely to be tough sometimes. However, you will always be supported by our professional crew and trained volunteers.

Training Each voyage will start with a thorough safety brief and the start of your training which will fill at least your first day on board. All meals while on board are included and you will eat with your watch and other members of the crew in the Mess. Tea, coffee, squash and snacks are always available in the Mess. One of the duties you will also have on board is assisting in the galley and helping to serve the food. Free time You will have plenty of time when you are not on watch to relax or to catch up on some sleep. The Mess is the social hub on board where you can catch up with what’s been happening during the day. When you come into ports you should be able to explore ashore with a chance to buy souvenirs and stock up on supplies.

6 To book your voyage call now 023 9283 2055 | www.tallships.org The Tall Ships Fleet The Tall Ships Fleet Ocean-Going Challenger Fleet Our fleet of four 72ft steel ocean-going yachts were designed by world renowned designer Rob Humphreys and built in 2000. Originally designed to race around the world, they are perfect for sail training as they provide an exciting but extremely safe environment for everyone onboard. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) gave the yachts the highest rating; they have the safety features, equipment and capability to be sailed anywhere in the world. The Challengers can take up to a maximum of 18 crew, made up as follows: Salaried Crew – Skipper (occasionally a fully qualified and experienced Volunteer) Volunteer Crew – Mate, 2 x Watch Leaders, Cook, Youth Mentor Voyage Crew – 12 (that’s you) Please note that not all the Volunteer Crew positions will be filled on every voyage. What’s life like on board? Considering the Challengers were designed to race around the world, things are pretty comfortable down below – comfortable and airy saloon (seating area), well equipped galley (kitchen) and two heads (toilets) with showers. The sleeping area is open plan with snug pipe cots (bunks) and your own storage area. Please note storage is limited so refer to our Voyage Crew Handbook for tips on what to bring. Training Each voyage will start with a thorough safety brief followed by some basic training. Once this has happened you will prepare the yacht for sailing and head out to sea, where your training will continue. We will encourage you to get involved with as much as possible while on board. On many voyages you will be able to work through the RYA Competent Crew syllabus. For most voyages you need no previous sailing experience. Watches The operation and maintenance of the yacht is a 24 hour job – to manage this a system of watchkeeping is used. You will be allocated to a watch while on board and while you are ‘on watch’ you will be involved with all aspects of sailing the yacht, including helming, sail changes, keeping lookout, helping in the galley and ‘Happy Hour’ (cleaning the yacht). Food All meals on board are included in your voyage. Tea, coffee, juice, snacks and fruit are available on a self service basis. Some voyages will have an allocated cook but you may well have to help in the galley – all part of the experience! Free time The watch systems allow you to have plenty of free time. This will give you a chance to catch up on sleep, relax and get to know your fellow Voyage Crew. It is normal that you will visit ports and marinas while on your voyage giving you opportunities to buy souvenirs and learn about different cultures.
