Introduction to sailing on a Brig or Yacht. You will learn the basics of seamanship and get involved with all aspects of life on board. A great experience that should leave you wanting to come back for more. Ideal as a gift for a loved one or friend. No sailing experience necessary. 4 To book your voyage call now 023 9283 2055 | www.tallships.org Useful information Voyage will include sleeping on board and working in a ‘watch’ system. May visit a foreign port (if voyage starts in the UK). A great way to build on your time on board and work on your seamanship skills. A good stepping stone before going off shore for an extended period. No sailing experience necessary. These voyages are a little more adventurous. You are likely to encounter bigger seas and stronger winds. You will also find these voyages slightly more physically demanding due to the combination of conditions and voyage length. Still no sailing experience necessary. Sailing off shore, out of sight of land is an incredible experience. You will be sailing the Brig or Yacht in a watch system for an extended time which will mean hard physical work and the likelihood of a change of your sleep pattern. A great way to get some miles under your belt. Some sailing experience is helpful but not essential. Primary purpose of the voyage is to race. This will be an exhilarating experience likely to push you physically. As well as improving your sailing knowledge, you will also learn about racing a large yacht. Some sailing experience is required for these voyages. What to Expect As the UK’s largest sail training charity we are experts at teaching people who are young and young at heart all about life on board our fleet. As sail trainers we presume you know nothing and teach you all you need to know. ■ You join the voyage as ‘Voyage Crew’ and get involved with all aspects of sailing the Brig or Challenger. ■ Some overnight voyages will plan to visit a foreign port – so you’ll need your passport. ■ The voyage itinerary will be decided by the Captain or Skipper depending on the weather and other factors to ensure as much sailing as possible. Your joining and leaving ports will only change if absolutely necessary and you will be informed of any change as soon as possible. ■ You will be encouraged to participate as much as possible but we won’t make you do anything that you don’t want to do. However, we do expect everyone to take their turn in ‘Happy Hour’ which is cleaning your ship or yacht. ■ The Voyage Crew will be divided into watches (groups) and under the guidance of your watch leader you will help sail your vessel. Crew structure and becoming a volunteer You will join as Voyage Crew which means you become part of the ‘team’ onboard who help with all aspects of life while at sea. You will be supported by a combination of salaried crew and volunteers. If you have joined a voyage of five days or more you may be assessed to see if you possess the skills to join us as a volunteer – this will be by being recommended at the end of your voyage. If you are recommended you will be able to join voyages as a volunteer to support the next generation of Voyage Crew that sails with us. Where will you go during the voyage? You will find where each voyage starts and finishes in the programme and suggestions of where some of the voyages might visit. However, it is impossible to guarantee where you will go during the voyage as this is very dependant on the weather and other factors. Your Captain or Skipper will keep you up to date with where you are likely to head to during your voyage. We will always endeavour to get in as much sailing as possible while you are on board. Tall Ships Spirit A Tall Ships Adventure is not a holiday in the usual sense of the word – it’s a unique ‘hands-on experience’. You will become an important part of the vessel’s crew and this is more than just the sailing – it will include food preparation, maintenance and cleaning. You’ll work as a team while on board but it’s still likely to be tough sometimes. However, you will always be supported by our professional crew and trained volunteers.
