Comic Relief: Multi-Cloud, Multi-Foundation, 400 Real-Time Donations Per Second, Zero Downtime, 100% Success
Comic Relief: Multi-cloud, multi-foundation, 400 real-time donations per second, zero downtime, 100% success Over the past 30 years, Comic Relief [http://www.comicrelief.com/] has raised over £1 billion for good causes around the world and in the UK. Through their two campaigns Red Nose Day [www.rednoseday.com] and Sport Relief [http://www.sportrelief.com/], they used the money donated by the great British public to make their vision a reality: a just world, free from poverty. Founded in 1985 by comedy scriptwriter Richard Curtis and comedian Lenny Henry in response to famine in Ethiopia, every year Comic Relief has grown in size and influence. In its first telethon in 1998 it raised £76,610. In 2015, it raised £99,418,831. Every two years, Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day takes over primetime Friday night BBC TV for seven hours. The telethon is responsible for the majority of Comic Relief’s annual fundraising, attracting a large audience who donate money via the website or a network of 14,000 call centre operators across 120 call centres who donate their time for free. “With an increasing number of donations to Comic Relief being taken online, it is critical we have 100% confidence in our donations platform. Armakuni provides us with that confidence.” Derek Gannon, COO, Comic Relief The old donations platform The directors appreciated that the existing platform was nearing its end of life and a new platform was needed - when such a large percentage of your annual money is made in about 7 hours, you really want to know the thing is not going to fail. -

Competition and Public Service Broadcasting: Stimulating Creativity Or Servicing Capital?
COMPETITION AND PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING: STIMULATING CREATIVITY OR SERVICING CAPITAL? Centre for Business Research, University of Cambridge Working paper No. 408 by Simon Turner Department of Health Services Research and Policy, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Keppel Street, London, WC1E 7HT Email: [email protected] Ana Lourenço School of Economics and Management, Catholic University of Portugal, Rua Diogo Botelho, 1327, 4169-005, Porto, Portugal. Email: [email protected] June 2010 This working paper forms part of the CBR Research Programme on Corporate Governance Abstract In UK public service broadcasting, recent regulatory change has increased the role of the private sector in television production, culminating in the BBC’s recent introduction of ‘creative competition’ between in-house and independent television producers. Using the concept of ‘cognitive distance’, this paper focuses on the increasing role of the independent sector as a source of creativity and innovation in the delivery of programming for the BBC. The paper shows that the intended benefits of introducing new competencies into public service broadcasting have been thwarted by, on the one hand, a high level of cognitive proximity between in-house and external producers and, on the other, a conflict in values between the BBC and the independent sector, with the latter responding to a commercial imperative that encourages creativity in profitable genres, leaving gaps in other areas of provision. While recent regulatory reform appears to have had a limited impact on the diversity of programming, it does suggest a closer alignment of programme content with the imperatives of capital. Implications for the literature on communities of practice are noted. -

By Kevin Kelly
Are the tabloids helping or hindering our progress? By Kevin Kelly (i) Executive Summary The aim of this study was to highlight the impact positive/ negative of the tabloid media in this country. The findings were pretty conclusive – the overwhelming message is negative. In terms of space allocated, twice as much space is allocated to negative headlines as opposed to positive one. Please note that for the purposes of this study; I didn’t include subheadlines and associated pictures which without doubt would have made the statistics even more negative. Negative headlines aren’t just allocated more space – they have more impact in terms of design ie font size/underlining/reverse etc. Collage without Independent Independent review: (Note we wanted to show both graphics considering that the Irish Independent isn’t considered a tabloid in the true sense of the word.) In terms of the number of positive to negative headlines; here are the stats: Positive Negative Neutral Total: 348 462 115 Totals without Irish Independent: 253 396 92 Daily Sun 58 85 30 Daily Star 79 110 25 Daily Mirror 62 92 18 Daily Mail 54 109 19 Irish Independent 95 66 23 This over emphasis on negative stories in the authors opinion has a negative knock on effect on consumer confidence – if peoples mind’s are continually filled with negativity, it is hard to expect them to be filled with confidence and want to go out and spend. Ironically their spending goes hand and hand with Advertising spend. Thus one could argue that the current editorial policy is damaging both the consumer and the newspaper.
