The Collection – an Amazon Studios, BBC Worldwide, France 3, 6 10 Lookout Point and Federation Entertainment coproduction – is set in a high-end Parisian house that emerged at the end of WWII, while Roots, a reworking of the revolutionary 1977 ABC miniseries, takes a harrowing journey into the world of African slave trading that existed in early America before and after the country’s official establishment on July 4, 1776, while showing how an enslaved family survives the hardships. Making one of history’s larger-than-life figures, Queen Victoria, relatable, was the challenge for Daisy Goodwin, who we know best in TV circles as the former ‘head girl’ of Silver River Productions, the UK factual producer she founded. Her first-person account of writing an ITV drama about the younger years of the famous British royal, who ruled the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901, focuses on imaging how a person goes from being a youthful teenager to the most powerful person in England overnight. Imagining the future is an equally popular activity for television’s best 12 14 writing talent. We hear from Braquo creator Olivier Marchal, who tells us about his new dystopian drama Section Zero, which considers a Europe in which evil mega-corporations have taken control of the continent and the police are forced to become gun-toting freedom fighters. Author Lawrence Hill had a similar idea with The Illegal, which we review in our regular feature ‘Award winner’. There were stories that it had once been more attractive, but that had been so long ago that no one remembered the time. It stood back in its gloomy, narrow strips of uncared-for, smoky gardens, whose broken iron railings were supposed to protect it from the surging traffic of a road which was always roaring with the rattle of busses, cabs, drays, and vans, and the passing of people who were shabbily dressed and looked as if they were either going to hard work or coming from it, or hurrying to see if they could find some of it to do to keep themselves from going hungry.

No longer a source of unreflective nostalgia for reactionaries, it is now being represented as a more nuanced entity that reflects the complexities of socialist society. The black and white narratives that shaped cultural memory of the GDR during the first fifteen years after the Wende have largely been replaced by more complicated tones of grey.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JURIES ANNOUNCED FOR 2015 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL *** Jurors Include Dylan McDermott, Cobie Smulders, Whoopi Goldberg, Gloria Steinem, Vanessa Williams, Steve Buscemi, Shelia Nevins, Debi Mazar, HanK Azaria, Mamie Gummer, MarK Boal, and Joana Vicente New York, NY [April 6, 2015] – The 2015 Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), presented by AT&T, today announced its jurors – a diverse group of 34 industry leaders, including award-winning filmmakers, producers, acclaimed actors, authors and entrepreneurs. The jury will be divided among the seven competitive Festival categories. The winning films, filmmakers and actors in each category will be announced at the TFF Awards Night ceremony on April 23 at Spring Studios. The 2015 Festival runs from April 15 –26. “The group of unique voices and perspectives that make up this year’s jury are sure to spark thoughtful discussion – and perhaps some friendly debate – around this year’s films,” said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival. The seven TFF juries will award $150,000 in cash and prizes. Announced earlier this year, eight of the winners will also receive a work of original art by an acclaimed artist as part of the Tribeca Film Festival Artists Awards program, sponsored by CHANEL. In addition to the Festival’s main competition juries, the five jurors for the third annual $25,000 Nora Ephron Prize, sponsored by Coach, recognizing a female writer or director, were also announced.
