#1 a-h: Heroes and Legends: The Most Influential Characters in Literature This is a DVD course about fictional characters—men, women, and sometimes —who are key figures in some of the great literary tales, spanning 3000 years, from Homer’s Odysseus to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter. Courses held 2 – 4 pm.

#2: Saturday, April 11, 2-4 p.m. — Ecuadorian Perspectives

Jorge Ayala (Rotary Exchange Student from Ecuador), Alejandro Freire (Exchange Student from Ecuador) and GAC professor Dan Venn will speak about life in Ecuador. Jorge will describe the human aspects of Ecuador, Alejandro will describe his life growing up in the Ecuadorian education system, and Dan will share his experiences as a teacher in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

#4: Wednesday, April 22, 6-8 p.m. — The Lincoln Assassination: A Fragile Time – 150th Anniversary April 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the assassination of President Lincoln. When John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War was ending, emotions were high, and killing the president was just part of Booth’s plan. Explore this fragile time in our history and the plot that nearly succeeded in toppling the government. We will have an overview of the events surrounding the assassination and reenactment of the events of the assassination – with audience participation!

#5 a-b: Learn to Play Pickleball —Ping Pong on Steroids Pickleball is enjoyed by people of all ages, but the majority of players are seniors. As a low impact sport, it’s great exercise, even for those who think they’re too old, too slow, and not in shape to play. John Sandry, who has played pickleball for four years, will teach us about the sport in the first session; in the second session he will provide us with on-the-court experience at Tourtelotte Park’s six dedicated pickleball courts. The second session is open only to those who attended session #1. Class size < 24.

#6 a-e: Spring Bird Walks—Meet the Birds as They Come Back North

Minnesota is a great gathering place for birds coming to breed here and points north. Walk area parks and find which birds have arrived and have a great morning while listening to their songs. All walks will go from 8 to 10 a.m.

#7: Thursday, May 7, 2-4 p.m. — Evolution of the Bicycle and Bicycling Attire

Join costumed bicyclists and historians in discovering the development of the bicycle, from its beginnings to its modern form. Learn about bicycling clothing for men and women and how it advanced women’s freedom in numerous ways. If you feel adventurous, ride your two-wheeled vehicle to class.

#8: Thursday, May 14, 2-4 p.m. —A Teacher’s Tale with a Yodeling Accompaniment Roger Stoufer, who recently published a memoir of his experiences as a public school educator, including his interactions with the Apple Gang, will read from his book. His cousin, yodeler Joy Berg, will vocalize songs that complement the readings. (Proceeds from any book sales will remain with Lifelong Learners.)

#9: Saturday, May 16, 10 a.m.-Noon—Hands on Chip Carving Try your hand at chip carving! Marty Leenhouts, a trained teacher and professional chip carver with 30 years of experience, will tell and show us how chip carving differs from other carving and will guide us in the hands-on process. Marty has taught thousands of people to chip carve, his lessons have been viewed online more than one million times, and he also teaches classes in person. #10 a-b: Thursdays (2 classes), May 21 & 28, 2-4 p.m. — Steven Sondheim’s Musical Theatre We will learn about a living American musical theatre composer, with emphasis on his output of musical works. His many successful productions include Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Company, Assassins, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods (which is currently out in movie form). Two works will be analyzed in depth. #11: Thursday, June 18, 2-4 p.m.—Travels with Road Scholars Several Lifelong Learner members will share their experiences about the Road Scholar (Elderhostel) trips they have enjoyed. Topics include domestic and international travel, as well as inter-generational experiences. Members also will discuss how to select trips to meet your needs (cost, activity level, single supplement, meals, etc.). Road Scholar materials will be available to review.
