Agenda Item F.3.b Supplemental Public Comment 2 Full Version ELECTRONIC Only March 2016 February 25, 2016 Dorothy Lowman, Chair Pacific Fishery Management Council 1100 NE Ambassador Place, #101 Portland, Oregon 97220 RE Agenda Item G.2: Swordfish Management Policy Connections; authorization of deep set buoy gear Dear Chair Lowman and Council Members: We understand that the Council is now considering transitioning buoy gear from an experimental gear to a federally authorized gear under the Highly Migratory Species Fishery Management Plan. We are writing to ask the Council to make authorization of buoy gear a high priority and initiate this process early in 2016, so that West Coast fishermen can start fishing with buoy gear as soon as possible. As an organization that works to create a more knowledgeable constituency for ocean conservation and assesses the sustainability of seafood species, we are always thrilled to hear of innovative ideas that could improve the way we fish. This is why we are so excited about deep-set buoy gear. We believe that buoy gear is a viable alternative to the currently used drift gillnets in the U.S. West Coast swordfish fishery, and could help make the fishery more sustainable. Experiments conducted with buoy gear off the West Coast have found that this fishing method catches high numbers of marketable swordfish and minimal amounts of non-target species, like sea turtles, whales, and bluefin tuna. This fishing method also results in a higher quality swordfish product, similar to harpoon-caught swordfish; this means fishermen get a higher price for their catch and consumers get a tastier product.

  • Companion to the Welsh Settlement in Patagonia
Companion to the Welsh Settlement in Patagonia Eirionedd A. Baskerville Cymdeithas Cymru-Ariannin/Wales-Argentina Society 2014 1 Copyright © Eirionedd A. Baskerville, 2014 2 Foreword The aim of this Companion is to gather together information from different sources about the life and work of some of the pioneers of the Welsh Settlement in Patagonia. These emigrants left their mark on every aspect of life in the settlement and many of their descendants still maintain its founding principles. The chief sources of the material are articles which appeared in Y Drafod, the Colony’s newspaper that first appeared in 1891 and is still being published today. Important information about the emigrants is to be found in the many books written on the history of the Colony, and for personal information on the families I am greatly indebted to the books of Albina Jones de Zampini. In addition to the census returns for England and Wales, 1841-1911, which are a valuable source for tracing an individual’s roots before emigrating, several websites contain family histories which have been contributed by descendants of the emigrants or other family members. Many of the reports contained in the Companion are based upon research commissioned by CyMAL, the sector of the Welsh Government that advises and supports museums, archives and libraries, and I am grateful for CyMAL’s permission to publish revised versions of those reports. By publishing the Companion on the web it will be possible to add to the information and revise it. Comments regarding corrections or additions are welcome. It is intended to add further reports from time to time on individuals, organizations and subjects relating to the Settlement, and suggestions regarding such additions would be welcomed.

  • LECTURE Kyffin Williams & R S Thomas – Attitudes to Wales and To
LECTURE Kyffin Williams & R S Thomas – Attitudes to Wales and to Faith Some of you here tonight will probably be thinking that to speak about a poet and an artist in the same lecture is a bit like comparing apples to oranges, especially from somebody who cannot claim to be either an artist or poet. Now, I know that bishops of past generations were great patrons of the arts and indeed employed both poets and artists, but I am afraid those days are long gone – Ichabod, the glory has departed. And as I said when I opened the summer exhibition at the Royal Cambrian Academy one year, when Kyffin was its president, I never ever got more than 20% for my artwork and to the relief of my teachers, gave it up in my second year at grammar school. The only comment I ever got was “Will never be any good but tries his best”. So I am no artist and have never tried to write poetry. 1 So then, why speak about an artist and poet? Well, both were famous Welshmen, one born in Llangefni and the other in Cardiff; both had an enormous affinity and love for Wales, its landscape and history, especially North Wales and they both lived at different times in Chirk, on the Lleyn peninsula, Meirionnydd and Anglesey and they were born within a few years of one another – R S Thomas in 1913 so it is his centenary year and Kyffin in 1918. Both lived into their 80’s. R S was 87 when he died in 2000 and Kyffin was 88 when he died in 2006.

  • 'Wales' African Twin' by Paul Williams
Wales’ African Twin The story of Dolen Cymru - the Wales Lesotho Link Paul Williams Author’s note It is a privilege to have been involved with Dolen Cymru – the Wales- Lesotho Link – since its inception. And it was a special privilege to have been charged with keeping the records since those very first informal meetings in 1983. I continued, as Secretary, to keep the records of the link until the Spring of 2004. I would like to record my sincere thanks to Dr Carl Clowes, who first suggested that I write this book. He has been a constant source of inspiration and encouragement. As well as writing the foreword, he has given the manuscript a thorough edit, adding fresh insights and up-dated material. I would also like to thank my wife Elizabeth for her support, proof- reading and sensible suggestions. As Secretary of the link, I have had the opportunity of working with wonderful colleagues, many of them serving on different Dolen committees and filling different posts, both in Wales and in Lesotho. They are too numerous to list here (some, but not all, appear in the text), but I would like to offer my deepest thanks and appreciation to all of them. Without their selfless and enthusiastic contribution, there would be no story to write. Indeed, the Vale of Glamorgan has over 100 Scheduled Ancient Monuments, over 700 Listed Buildings and 38 Conservation Areas that are afforded statutory protection by legislation. However, this system of statutory recognition, by its nature, only takes account of items of exceptional significance. Often there are locally important buildings that although acknowledged not to be of ‘national’ or ‘exceptional’ importance, are considered key examples of vernacular architecture or buildings, which have an important local history. It is these buildings which are often the main contributors to local distinctiveness, but which have to date, remained un-surveyed and afforded little recognition or protection. The original County Treasures project was published by the then South Glamorgan County Council in the late 1970’s. It was conceived as a locally adopted inventory of ‘special features’ in the former County area. However, as a result of local government restructuring, the changes to local authority boundaries, as well as changes in responsibilities and funding mechanisms the survey was never completed, and as a consequence was not comprehensive in its coverage.
