The Collect and Readings for today O God, the strength of all those who put their trust in you, mercifully accept our prayers and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without you, grant us the help of your grace, that in the keeping of your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

A reading from the book of Genesis. The man and the woman heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ Then the LORD God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I ate.’ The LORD God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.’ Genesis 3.8-15

Psalm 130 - With the Lord there is mercy and plenteous redemption. Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice; let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, O Lord, who could stand? For there is forgiveness with you, therefore you shall be feared. R

I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him; in his word is my hope. My soul waits for the Lord, more than the night-watch for the morning, more than the night-watch for the morning. R

O Israel, wait for the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy; With him there is plenteous redemption, and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins. R

A reading from the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture – ‘I believed, and so I spoke’ – we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Corinthians 4.13 – 5.1

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark The crowd came together again, so that Jesus and his companions could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, ‘He has gone out of his mind.’ And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.’ And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. ‘Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin’ – for they had said, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’ Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.’ And he replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ And looking at those who sat around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.’ Mark 3.20-35

Prayers of Intercession for this week As the crowds sought out the earthly Jesus, eager to bring him their needs and concerns, so we bring to the Lord those things on our hearts where we long to see him at work.

We thank God for the joy of worship, the hope of eternal joy even amidst today’s troubles, and the love of Christ in prayers answered.

We pray for leaders of governments, schools, hospitals or other institutions, whose decisions have significant consequences for others. We ask that they may choose wisely and well.

We pray for those living with the consequences of poor decisions over health, relationships, work or money. We ask they may find a way through their problems.

We pray for those who have had an encounter with God, and wonder how to respond. We ask that they may step forward in faith, not turn their backs in disbelief.

We pray for the Church in changing times. We pray that Christians may recognise where God is leading in new ways and choose to follow.

Thank you, God, that in your love you choose to hear your people’s prayers and in your power you choose to act. We commit our fragile world to your faithful care.

Cathedral Bible Study Group: a message from Canon Jan – “My apologies that owing to an IT problem, I can't access the group list of email addresses. If group members would email me, I can reinstate you on a new list. If there are others who would also like to receive a weekly commentary on the Sunday gospel passage, do email me as well, on [email protected]

Ring Out Wild Bells ! For the last 15 months Covid restrictions meant that our bellringers have been unable to ring the Cathedral bells. Since services began again last July, one person has used the Ellacombe apparatus so you may well have heard the chimes for a few minutes before either the 9 o’clock or 11.15 service. Government and Church in Wales advice now permits ringing and we are delighted that ringing can start again on Sunday 13th June. At the moment social distancing means that we can ring only 6 of the bells but we look forward to a time when we can gradually return to ringing all 12. Our ringing team says, “Please listen out for us : we’ll ring for about half an hour before the 11.15 service on Sunday mornings and hope you will be as happy to hear us as we are to be ringing again”. Our thanks and good wishes to the ringers as they return!

Cathedral Kids toddler group will meet each Wednesday in term time from 16th June in Prebendal House, with play, chat, snacks, songs and times for the little ones to get to know the Cathedral as their church. The group is led by Emma Sturgess ([email protected]) and Canon Jan, please contact them to register for the group. Numbers are limited at present so register now!

Following on from David & Sue Smith’s sponsored pilgrimage to Penrhys, another member of the Cathedral community is taking up a challenge. Mr Alun Davies writes: Dear Friends - I am taking on the challenge to raise £1000 for a homeless charity in Wales which is run by my daughter Bonnie. Housing Justice Cymru mobilises Christian action on homelessness and housing need through love, justice, advocacy and nurture. They really do excellent work. I will make four pilgrimages to holy places this year starting with a mini pilgrimage from Llandaff cathedral to the holy shrine and statue of Mary at Penrhys in the Rhondda. My final pilgrimage will be to some Orthodox monasteries in Greece. Please donate to this good cause. The link to my JustGiving page is https://www.justgiving.com/fundra.../Alun-Davies-walks-Wales

Information relevant to the pandemic restrictions

We display the QR code that links with the NHS Tracing App. If you have the app on your mobile device you can scan the code through the app. This means that if people visit the building and later test positive for coronavirus, other app users who were there at the same time may be sent an alert, if local public health teams think this is necessary.

Sunday Worship guidelines – a reminder…. Here are some of the key things to note:

• There are currently three services in term-time: 9.00 am, 11.15 am and 4.00 pm • Both morning services are celebrations of the Holy Eucharist with the 9.00 am service catering particularly for children and families. • Social distancing guidelines must be maintained at all times – especially before and after the services. Given that the rows are 2 metres apart, they can act as a useful guide when standing in the Nave. • Hand sanitiser must be used on entry. • Face-coverings: Welsh Government regulations now make the wearing of face coverings compulsory in public buildings. This includes the Cathedral. • Everyone attending will be invited to complete a ‘track and trace’ card - please bring a pen! • Communion will be administered standing and in one kind only. • There will be no congregational singing. • Ritual and ceremony will be kept to a minimum. • No service sheets will be used – the order of service will be available online to print in advance and bring with you or to follow on a phone or other mobile device. They are also available through QR codes displayed at each service. • The ‘2-metre distance’ rule means that the capacity of the Cathedral will be between 80 and 90 individuals although family groups sitting together will legitimately increase the number. • 5 cathedral chairs must be left clear between households.

Please note that there will be a legal maximum capacity number and it may be necessary to impose restrictions on entry to ensure that number is not exceeded.

The Welsh Government, the Church in Wales and the Diocese have all produced and issued protocols and detailed instructions to clergy and parishes. We are following them all.
