Eek-A-Mouse a grandi à Kingston et s'est découvert une passion pour le chant à l'âge de 15 ans alors qu'il était encore à l'école. C'est à l'âge de 17 ans, en 1974, qu'il enregistre sous son vrai nom, ses deux premiers titres My father's land, puis Creation. Ces titres ont été produits par son professeur de mathématiques, M. Dehaney. C'est en 1980, qu'il commence à travailler brièvement avec The Papa Roots, Black Ark, Jah Life.

Son premier single très controversé Wa Do Dem sort en 1981 suivi de Modelling Queen, tous deux issus de son premier album Bubble Up Yu Hip et produits par le chanteur Linval Thompson. Il continue en 1981 avec les singles Once A Virgin, Modelling Queen et Virgin Girl. Il travaillera l'année suivante avec Scientist, le producteur Junio Lawes et les Roots Radics viennent également lui apporter leur soutien. Il sort de nombreux tubes tous marqués par son style si particulier, qui a fait sa signature à travers le monde. Il réussit la même année à être programmé pour le festival Reggae Sun. Sa prestation est très remarquée avec son titre Ganja Smuggling, et c'est ainsi qu'il revient pour le festival en 1982 et en 1984.En 1985, produit par Anthony and Ronald Welch, il sort son premier album Assassinator sous le label américain RAS Records. À la suite d'une baisse d'audience, Eek-A-Mouse enregistre son album suivant en Angleterre avec le producteur Cliff Carnegie. Puis, en 1988, son succès se concrétise et il arrive à convaincre son nouveau public avec Eek-A-Nomics. Il signe l'année suivante avec le label Island, et décroche même le rôle de « Fat Smitty » dans le film New Jack City. Jusqu'au milieu des années 90, il continuera à enregistrer sous ce label, et certaines de ses chansons sont produites par Augustus Clarke, Daddy-O et Matt Robinson. En 1996, il enregistre Black Cowboy sur le label Sunset Blvd./Explicit. Sa voix semble alors avoir baissé d'une octave, mais son spécial « biddy biddy bengs» est toujours bien présent. Jusqu'à la fin des années 90, il continue et enchaîne entre 200 et 250 spectacles par an. Il collabore notamment pendant cette période avec différents artistes comme Cocoa Brovaz, POD, Papas Culture ou encore MC Torch. Après des apparitions dans plusieurs compilations au Royaume Uni, il sort début 2001, Eeksperience sur le label Coach House Records suivi de Mouse gone wild et Eek-a-speeka. Il continue toujours a travaillé en studio pour un nouveau CD.

Ripton Joseph Hylton, born 19 November 1957,at Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies is known as EEK A MOUSE.It is not only Eek-A-Mouse’s 6 feet 6 inches height that make him one of Jamaica’s most individual talents. Hylton’s unusual name was originally that of a racehorse upon which he frequently lost money; when the horse finally won a race, he had, of course, refused to back it. ‘My Father’s Land’ and ‘Creation’, his first two releases, came out under his real name in the mid-70s. In 1980, he started recording with Joe Gibbs after working briefly with the Papa Roots, Black Ark, Gemini, Jah Life, Black Scorpio and Virgo sound systems. By 1981, he had teamed up with producer and Volcano sound owner Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes and had achieved significant hits with ‘Once A Virgin’, ‘Modelling Queen’ and ‘Virgin Girl’. Between 1980 and 1984, Lawes and Linval Thompson used the Roots Radics at Channel One with Scientist mixing, to help record a number of hit albums and singles by the DJ. In 1981, after the release of his first widely available album Wa Do Dem, Eek-A-Mouse was the surprise star of Reggae Sunsplash. ‘Ganja Smuggling’, ‘For Hire and Removal’ and ‘Do You Remember’ and the album Skidip! (1982) sustained his high profile. The singles ‘Terrorists In The City’, ‘Anarexol’ and ‘Operation Eradication’ (a response to his friend Errol Scorcher’s death) followed, along with Mouse And Man and Assassinator (both 1983) and several appearances on live dancehall albums. Nevertheless, it was not long before his characteristic ‘biddy biddy bengs’ started to wear thin and his popularity diminished somewhat after 1984’s Mouseketeer, the last of his albums with Lawes. Prolific reggae legend with his unique "sing-jay" style and one of Jamaica’s funniest, and most creative musical exports since’80s. Toured extensively around the world playing at major festivals. Has collaborated with artists as diverse as P.O.D. Genaside II, Damian Marley and many others. He is currently working in the studio on new album to be released 2017.
