More recently, this group has been treated at the generic level or as a subgenus of Hypoaspis Canestrini, 1885. One of the objectives of the present paper is to provide a detailed characterisation of Cosmolaelaps, here considered at the generic level, a group that was poorly char- acterised in its original description as well as in subsequent publications. It is most closely related to Stratiolaelaps Ber- lese, from which it can usually be distinguished by the presence of extra paired and unpaired setae on the opisthonotal region of the dorsal shield, as well as by not having hypertrophied chelicerae or corniculi. A total of 108 species belong to Cosmolaelaps, including the new species described here. Five other species may also belong to this genus, but the avail- able published information does not allow their conclusive placement.

  • Soil Mite Communities (Acari: Mesostigmata) As Indicators of Urban Ecosystems in Bucharest, Romania M
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Soil mite communities (Acari: Mesostigmata) as indicators of urban ecosystems in Bucharest, Romania M. Manu1,5*, R. I. Băncilă2,3,5, C. C. Bîrsan1, O. Mountford4 & M. Onete1 The aim of the present study was to establish the efect of management type and of environmental variables on the structure, abundance and species richness of soil mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) in twelve urban green areas in Bucharest-Romania. Three categories of ecosystem based upon management type were investigated: protected area, managed (metropolitan, municipal and district parks) and unmanaged urban areas. The environmental variables which were analysed were: soil and air temperature, soil moisture and atmospheric humidity, soil pH and soil penetration resistance. In June 2017, 480 soil samples were taken, using MacFadyen soil core. The same number of measures was made for quantifcation of environmental variables. Considering these, we observed that soil temperature, air temperature, air humidity and soil penetration resistance difered signifcantly between all three types of managed urban green area. All investigated environmental variables, especially soil pH, were signifcantly related to community assemblage. Analysing the entire Mesostigmata community, 68 species were identifed, with 790 individuals and 49 immatures. In order to highlight the response of the soil mite communities to the urban conditions, Shannon, dominance, equitability and soil maturity indices were quantifed. With one exception (numerical abundance), these indices recorded higher values in unmanaged green areas compared to managed ecosystems. The same trend was observed between diferent types of managed green areas, with metropolitan parks having a richer acarological fauna than the municipal or district parks.

  • Linking Morphological and Molecular Taxonomy for the Identification of Poultry House, Soil, and Nest Dwelling Mites in the Weste

Baardsen6, Jose Francisco Lima-Barbero 7,8, Shira Gal9, Efrat Gavish-Regev 10, Yuval Gottlieb11, Lise Roy 12, Eitan Recht13, Marine El Adouzi12 & Eric Palevsky9 Because of its ability to expedite specimen identifcation and species delineation, the barcode index number (BIN) system presents a powerful tool to characterize hyperdiverse invertebrate groups such as the Acari (mites). However, the congruence between BINs and morphologically recognized species has seen limited testing in this taxon. We therefore apply this method towards the development of a barcode reference library for soil, poultry litter, and nest dwelling mites in the Western Palearctic. Through analysis of over 600 specimens, we provide DNA barcode coverage for 35 described species and 70 molecular taxonomic units (BINs). Nearly 80% of the species were accurately identifed through this method, but just 60% perfectly matched (1:1) with BINs. High intraspecifc divergences were found in 34% of the species examined and likely refect cryptic diversity, highlighting the need for revision in these taxa. These fndings provide a valuable resource for integrative pest management, but also highlight the importance of integrating morphological and molecular methods for fne-scale taxonomic resolution in poorly-known invertebrate lineages. DNA barcoding1 alleviates many of the challenges associated with morphological specimen identifcation by comparing short, standardized fragments of DNA – typically 648 bp of the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene for animals – to a well-curated reference library.

Abstract This paper reports on two species of mites of the genus Cosmolaelaps Berlese, 1903 in Iran—C. dorfakiensis sp. nov., and C. pinnatus sp. nov., extracted from soil and leaf litter samples in Guilan Province, Northern Iran. A key to the species of Cosmolaelaps occurring in the Iran is also provided. Key words: taxonomy, soil mites, Mesostigmata, Laelapidae, Cosmolaelap, Iran Introduction The genus Cosmolaelaps has been collected in many parts of the world and includes approximately 108 described species (Moreira et al., 2014). Most of the species are free-living in soil, litter and humus under trees, in moss, or on rodents or in their nest (Evans & Till, 1966; Evans & Till, 1979; Bregetova, 1977; Moreira et al., 2014). Some species are associated with insects such as cockroaches (Cosmolaelaps calamitus (Faraji & Halliday, 2009)), and termites (C. ungeri and C. brevipedestra (Karg, 1985)). The genus Cosmolaelaps was described by Berlese (1903) as a subgenus of Laelaps Koch, and raised to the genus level by the same author some years later (Berlese, 1920).

Box 454, Ngaoundéré, Cameroon 2 University of Bremen, UFT Center for Environmental Research and Sustainable Technology, 28359 Bremen, Germany * Corresponding author, e-mail: [email protected] Received 16 November 2018 | Accepted 28 November 2018 Published online at www.soil-organisms.de 1 December 2018 | Printed version 15 December 2018 DOI 10.25674/8fsw-6t13 Abstract Soil Gamasina of Central African savanna are little known. In our study, Gamasina were assessed for a high Guinean savanna and for selected treatments of a ReviTec site for the rehabilitation of degraded soil, Ngaoundéré region (Adamawa, Cameroon). The experimental site was established in 2012. Four years later, in 2016, four sampling campaigns during the rainy season were undertaken (May, June, July, August). The investigated treatments were: (1) compost + mycorrhiza (cpmy), (2) compost + biochar (cpbc), (3) compost + biochar + bokashi (cpbcbo). The controls were: ReviTec control (ctrl1) and adjacent savanna (sav). Gamasina were extracted from 0 – 10 cm soil using a modified Berlese-Tullgren extractor and identified microscopically at the morphospecies level. Most of the thirty-four species belonging to fourteen genera and eight families seem to be new to science; they are treated as morphospecies with preliminary names. In comparison to savanna and control, the investigated ReviTec treatments increased total Gamasina abundance up to factor five and species number by factor two.

Fennica 17: 366—372. During 1997—2002, 105 samples of mites were collected from 34 nests of the white-tailed sea eagle in Poland. The material included 9,724 specimens of Mesostigmata belonging to 86 species. The mite communities were dominated by species of the families Parasitidae, Macrochelidae and Ascidae. The most abundant species were Alliplzis balleri, Androlaelaps casalis, Parasitus fime— torum and Macrocheles merdarius that altogether made up 48% of all the speci- mens collected. Alliplzis halleri andAndrolaelaps casalis were also the two most frequently found mites. A summary is presented on the biology and distribution of the abundant species. D. J.
