We detected Coreomyces thalli in five different DNA positions on the hosts. Thalli from the various positions grouped in four distinct clusters in the resulting gene trees, distinctly Fungi so in the ITS and LSU of the nuclear ribosomal DNA, less so in the SSU of the nuclear ribosomal DNA and the mitochondrial host-specificity ribosomal DNA. Thalli from the left side of abdomen grouped in a single cluster, and so did thalli from the ventral right side. insect Thalli in the mid-ventral position turned out to be a mix of three clades, while thalli growing dorsally grouped with thalli from phylogeny the left and right abdominal clades. The mid-ventral and dorsal positions were found in male hosts only. The position on the left hemelytron was shared by members from two sister clades. Statistical analyses demonstrate a significant positive correlation between clade and position on the host, but also a weak correlation between host sex and clade membership. These results indicate that sex-of-host specificity may be a non-existent extreme in a continuum, where instead weak preferences for one host sex may turn out to be frequent. -

Webb, and Liane Suloway INTRODUCTION Aquatic macroinvertebrates are primary and secondary level consumers that play an important role in transferring energy through the different trophic levels of the food chains of aquatic ecosystems. These animals feed upon submerged and emergent macrophytes, plankton, and organic material suspended in the water column. Burrowing and feeding activities aid in the decomposition of plant and animal matter and the eventual recycling of nutrients. In addition, these organisms prey upon each other and serve as food for fishes, certain birds, and other animals. In general, aquatic macroinvertebrates have not been systematically surveyed in Illinois, and rarely have individual species been studied ecologically. This is due, in part, to the inconspicuous nature of most freshwater inverte- brates and the many taxonomic problems which preclude distributional, ecologi- cal, and other studies. -

Global Trends in the Description of Aquatic and Semiaquatic Heteroptera Species, 1758–2004
Global trends in the description of aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera species, 1758–2004 John T. Polhemus & Dan A. Polhemus Species description trends for the 4782 species of aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera (Gerromorpha, Nepomorpha, and Leptopodomorpha) named during the 246 year interval from 1758 through 2004 are analyzed in regard to number of species descriptions per year and cumulative number of species. These data are graphed both on a world basis, and for seven major zoogeographic regions (Palearctic, Nearctic, Neotropical, Afrotropical, Oriental, Australian and Pacific). This analysis reveals that our taxonomic knowledge of aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera, as measured by species descriptions, has accumulated at a progressively faster rate over time when assessed on a world basis, albeit in an episodic and uneven fashion, with peaks of high activity interspersed with periods of relatively low output. When examined at the level of individual zoogeographic regions, the accumulation of taxonomic descriptions is seen to be pronouncedly episodic, and contingent upon the productivity of particular regional experts during the courses of their careers, with just ten authors accounting for over 40 percent of all currently accepted species descriptions. Species accumulation curves, based on published descriptions, indicate that description of extant aquatic and semiaquatic Heteroptera species is nearly complete for the Palearctic and Nearctic regions, and well advanced for the Neotropical region. The Oriental and Australian (including New Guinea) regions show continuing sharp upward trends, indicating that these regions are still far from completely documented. The flattening of the description accumulation curves in the Afrotropical and Pacific regions is interpreted to be an artifact produced by a relative paucity of recent taxonomic work in these regions, and thus not truly indicative of well documented biotas in these areas. -

This species is endemic to the Patagonian subregion (Andean region) in Argentina. -
The Identity of the Spinola Collection Corixidae (Heteroptera)
The identity of the Spinola Collection Corixidae (Heteroptera) Antti Jansson Jansson, A. 1992: The identity of the Spinola Collection Corixidae (Heteroptera).-Entomol. Fennica 3:1 73- 175. In a catalogue prepared on the Hentiptera of the Massimiliano Spinola Collection in the Torino Museum, Italy, 16 species were placed under the generic name Corixa, and two under the generic name Sigara. In ten of the taxa, the author was claimed to have been Spinola himself. However, only two valid taxa have been generally accepted, and the rest are either synonymic or only collection names. The present paper reveals the true identity of all the species of the Corixidae in the Spinola Collection. Antti Jansson, Zoological Museum, University of Helsinki, P. This cata undulata, 391, 202, 20, 2 = Sahlberg [correct logue included altogether 18 taxa of Corixidae, author is Fallen], Sweden, Dahlbom, 2 exx.: lQ 16 of which were placed under the generic name Sigara nigrolineata nigrolineata (Fieber, 1848) Corixa, and two under Sigara. Specimens were collected by monthly monitoring different types of habitats in the protected area. The study reveals an addition of 17 species, along with the 8 species previously described for this area. Was noted the presence of Aphelocheirus aestivalis Fabricius, 1794 and Cymatia rogenhoferi Fieber, 1864 species that have a sporadic presence in the Romanian fauna, being reported few records for these species. These data complete the information on this group collected on the other side of the Romanian-Hungarian border, in Körös-Maros National Park, where a number of 28 species were identified. Because the goal is to create a protected area on both sides of the border, it is imperative to know this group in both protected areas, in order to create a common monitoring plan and common management measures. AQUATIC HEMIPTERA OF NORTHEASTERN ALGERIA: DISTRIBUTION, PHENOLOGY AND CONSERVATION Fouzi ANNANI 1,2, Ahmed H. AL F ARHAN 3 & Boudjéma SA M RAOUI 1,3* RÉSUMÉ.— Hémiptères aquatiques du nord-est de l’Algérie : distribution, phénologie et conserva- tion.— L’échantillonnage de 83 sites à travers le complexe de zones humides du nord-est Algérien, un point chaud de la biodiversité aquatique, a permis d’identifier 35 espèces d’hémiptères aquatiques. La répartition et la phénologie des espèces sont présentées et les histoires de vie de Notonecta glauca et Notonecta obli- qua déduites. Ces deux espèces estivent dans des milieux refuges à hautes altitudes avant de redescendre se reproduire en plaine à l’automne. Diverses manifestations de changements globaux (pompage de l’eau, construction de barrages, introduction d’espèces exotiques et fragmentation des milieux) influencent néga- tivement l’intégrité écologique des milieux de la région étudiée. SUMMARY.— A survey, involving the sampling of 83 sites, investigated the aquatic hemiptera of north- eastern Algeria, a well known hotspot of aquatic biodiversity. The study recorded 35 species with data on distribution and phenology presented and discussed. Aspects of the life history of some species (Notonecta glauca and Notonecta obliqua) were inferred from their distribution and phenology and they were found to aestivate at high altitude refuges. Insect conservation in North Africa is still embryonic, relying mainly on protected areas to provide surrogate conservation to a rich and diverse group. This is inadequate in view of the current distribution of aquatic insects, often located in unprotected habitats (intermittent streams, temporary pools, dunary ponds) and the fact that diverse manifestations of global changes (loss of habitats due to water extraction and dam construction, invasive species, habitat fragmentation) are fast eroding the biodiversity of protected areas.
