B O H U N G A L L E R Y * * * P R E S S R E L E A S E * * * MARY FEDDEN: A Centenary Celebration of Major Works Royal Academy Paintings, Drawings, Collages and Early Lithographs 7th November – 28th November To celebrate Bohun Gallery’s long and personal association with one of Britain’s best-loved artists, the Henley on Thames gallery will be celebrating Mary Fedden’s Centenary with a major show of her very finest work including Royal Academy paintings, drawings, collages and the first survey of her early lithographs. Many of the paintings have not been seen since their first appearance at Royal Academy Summer shows which presents an exciting opportunity for Modern British collectors. These reappearing works also offer the new generation of Fedden collectors the chance to get a much clearer and broader idea of Fedden’s artistic development and diversity. Mary Fedden first exhibited her work at Bohun Gallery in Henley on Thames in 1984. Patricia Jordan Evans recalls “It was Elisabeth Frink who introduced me to Mary Fedden nearly 35 years ago. From the start there was a rapport between us and we enjoyed a warm friendship until her death in 2012”. Mary and her artist husband, Julian Trevelyan RA, regularly exhibited their paintings at the Henley on Thames gallery which offered collectors outside London the opportunity to discover Fedden’s work. Her paintings were much sort after from the start for their unique artistry and attractiveness. Patricia recalls how she regularly discovered collectors camped out overnight on Bohun’s doorstep, ensuring that they were first through the door at the Private View - “Private views for Mary were always absolutely packed with friends and admirers. -

B O H U N G A L L E R Y * * * PRESS RELEASE and IMAGE SHEET* * * JULIAN TREVELYAN RA: ETCHINGS 13TH SEPT – 25TH OCT 2014 Tom among the Flowers, 1978 Etching 13.7 x 18.7ins Chiswick Mall, 1974 Etching 13.7 x 18.7ins This remarkable exhibition spans the full fifty years of Julian Trevelyan’s print making career and highlights the extraordinary diversity and technical ability of this master printmaker. Recognised as one of the most prominent and influential printmakers of the twentieth century, Royal Academician Julian Trevelyan (1910 – 1988) was an important innovator of modern printing techniques. By the late 1950s he was Head of the Etching Department at the Royal College of Art where he taught and inspired, amongst others Norman Ackroyd, David Hockney and RB Kitaj. Ackroyd later wrote: ‘An enormous amount of work and desire goes into something so seemingly easy. I have, through my many years of teaching, often looked back and tried to analyse my time in Julian’s etching class at the RCA as a template for what can be achieved’ Norman Ackroyd CBE RA (Cat Rais p. 23) Bohun Gallery’s exhibition highlights Trevelyan’s innovative approach to etching (he used lace curtains, hessian sacks and even fishnet tights to create patterned effects within his etchings) as well as the extraordinary breadth of his subject matter. A great traveller, Trevelyan’s response to some of the world’s greatest cities is presented including London, Paris, Florence and New York. No matter where his travels took him, he and his wife Mary Fedden always returned to their beloved Thames at Chiswick. -

Foster Professor Emeritus at the University of Iowa, former Director of the Fine Arts Dada Archive and Research Center, University of Iowa; General Editor of Crisis and the Arts: The History of Dada including The Library of Estera Milman Curator, University of Iowa Museum of Art, Founding Director of Alternative Traditions in the Contemporary Arts (ATCA) Project, Special Collections- University of Iowa Libraries 2,401 titles in circa 2,500 volumes Stephen Foster received his Ph.D. in Art History from The University of Pennsylvania and has been the recipient of honors and awards from The National Endowment for the Humanities, The National Endowment for the Arts, The Getty Grant Program, The Mellon Foundation, and The Smithsonian. Foster has served the field widely in reviewing the scholarship of his peers for The National Endowment of the Humanities, The National Endowment of the Arts and the Getty Post-Doctoral Grant Program. Additionally, he has administered and directed numerous fine arts and interdisciplinary programs of international scope; most notably, the University of Iowa’s Program for Modern Studies (with Estera Milman), widely respected as one of the best and most successful programs of its kind, the Corroborate (Intermedia Program), and The Dada Archive and Research Center, the largest American research center devoted to study in this field. As faculty involved in teaching and research at major art history programs from 1972 through 2001, Foster taught a full spectrum of twentieth century graduate courses and advanced seminars, and supervised numerous M.A. -

Mary, could we start, perhaps, by my asking you about how you met, or how you first met Julian, and something about the beginnings of your long relationship with him. Well, I met him first when I was a student at the Slade. I suppose I was about l8, and I was taught at the Slade by a, a lovely Russian, called Polunin, Vladimir Polunin, who was quite a figure in his day, and had worked with Diagalev at designing for the ballet. And he was a neighbour of Julian's. Julian lived, he'd just moved into Durham Wharf, and Polunin lived on Chiswick Mall, and wanted to have a great big party for one of his sons, and he asked Julian if he could borrow Durham Wharf to hold this party. So Julian came to lunch with Polunin at the Slade, to discuss the party, and I was looking out of the window, and I saw this great, six foot four man, coming up the path with Polunin, who was very small. And I thought he looked wonderful. And I rushed down to the porter who was everybody's friend, and I said, "Connell, who is that man with Polunin?" And he said, "Oh, he's Julian Trevelyan." And I said, "I'm going to marry him." And Connell, the porter, said, "Bad luck, old girl, he's just got married." And I said, "Oh well, I'm only l8, never mind!" And a few days later, this amazing party happened. -
