But from him Anthroposophy can come to know of a living “Pilgrimage ” — as an innate predisposition o f the soul — to the world of spirit. Such a poet-spirit must, if he is rightly understood, be recognized within the anthroposophical movement as the bearer o f a message from the spirit realm. It must indeed be felt as a good destiny that he wishes to work within this movement. H e adds, to the evidence which Anthroposophy can give of the truth inherent within it, that which works within a creative personality as spirit-bearer like the light of this truth itself. It focuses in particular on the movement’s emergence in the 1890s and the first three decades of operation. Situated amidst a growing international field of comparable socialist children’s initiatives, socialist Sunday schools attempted to connect their local activity of children’s education to the broader politics of international socialism. In this discussion I explore the attempt to make this con- nection, including the endeavour to transcend party differences in the creation of a non-partisan international children’s socialist movement, the cooption of traditional Sunday school rituals, and the resolve to make socialist childhood cultures was the responsibility of both men and women. Defending their existence against criticism from conservative campaigners, the state, and sections of the left, socialist Sunday schools mobilized a complex and contested culture of socialist childhood. INTRODUCTION The British Socialist Sunday School movement (SSS) first appeared within the sanguine temper of turn-of-the-century socialist politics. Camphill and the Future
3 Camphill Contexts A communal movement, like any living thing, evolves in complex relationship with its environment. In the beginning, the relevant environment is small. The movement’s growth is shaped primarily by the founders’ creativity and strength of will, their capacity to get along with one another, and other internal factors. Movements that reach a second or third generation do so because their found- ers manage to open themselves to the surrounding world, at least to the extent of welcoming a new generation into movement leadership. This is what Camphill accomplished, rather splendidly, with the incorporation of baby boomers in the 1970s. By the time a communal movement reaches maturity, however, it does not simply live within an environment. It relates simultaneously to multiple contexts, each offering its own challenges and opportunities to the movement. The task of a mature movement is to allow itself to be transformed by each of its contexts, and simultaneously to transform each context by bringing to it distinctly communal practices and ideals. THE ANTHROPOSOPHICAL MOVEMENT Camphill’s first context was the anthroposophical movement, and anthroposophy continues to exert a formative influence over Camphill’s development. The found- ers of Camphill began as members of anthroposophical youth groups in Vienna. Like other clusters of younger anthroposophists in the 1920s and 1930s, they were impatient with abstract study and eager to translate their spiritual ideals into con- crete practices. When the rise of Hitler forced them out of Vienna, they followed the migration patterns of anthroposophists before and since—to the British Isles, and soon thereafter to the United States, South Africa, Holland, and Scandina- via. -

Sufficiency Review Cover Sheet Elements Required of a Petition to Establish a Charter School Pursuant to the public charter school rules adopted by the Idaho State Board of Education on March 10, 2005, charter school petitioners are required to submit a draft charter school petition to the Idaho State Department of Education (SDE) for the purpose of determining whether the petition complies with statutory requirements (I.C. 33-5202). This review must occur prior to the petition being submitted to an authorized chartering entity (IDAPA 08.02.04. 200.03). Each section presents criteria for a response that meets the standard, and these criteria should guide the overall rating for the section. The Comments area provides space to identify data and other evidence that supports the rating. If the standard is not meet, comments for revisions or improvement are required. The rationale for each rating is important, especially if some of the data or evidence does not fit neatly into the criteria provided. The following definitions should guide the ratings: Meets the Standard: The charter and amendments reflect a thorough understanding of key issues. It addresses the topic with specific and accurate information that shows thorough preparation and presents a clear, realistic picture of how the school expects to operate. Does Not Meet the Standard: The charter and amendments do not meet statutory requirements, lacks information or raises substantial concerns about the applicant’s understanding of the topic and/or ability to meet the requirement in practice. After a sufficiency review has been conducted by the State Department of Education within thirty (30) days of receipt, the results of the review will be returned to the authorized representative submitting the amendments. -

Meditation is a Matter of Civilization Three Network Conferences of the Goetheanum Meditation Initiative The Goetheanum worldwide meditation initiative dates back to 2006. Its goal is to cultivate meditative practice on the basis of anthroposophy and make that practice visible. Since its founding, a broad network of those active in meditation has been established. It all began with a question about the core tasks of theGoetheanum and how these tasks could be supported by foundations. Anders Kumlander from the Vidar Foundation (Sweden) and Rolf Kerler from the Evidenzgesellschaft (Switzerland) found an answer in discussions held during the fall of 2006 with Arthur Zajonc, Ursula Flatters, Carina Schmid, and Heinz Zimmermann: support and a higher profile for a meditative practice based on anthroposophy. Everyoneagreed, but with this theme came a further insight that made the issue somewhat more complex. It was a field that could only be mentioned with hesitation in recent years, and one that had been neglected for decades before that. It seemed necessary to bring others on board to evaluate theplace of meditative life in the Anthroposophical Society, and then to find ways to move it forward. Ignaz Anderson (Iona Foundation, Holland); Elizabeth Wirsching, Robin Schmidt and Bodo von Plato from the Goetheanum; and Ron Dunselman (Holland) were added. This initial core group began to exchange thoughts about meditative methods and experiences. In 2007 the idea arose of forming an international group (with some new members) of twelve people from various countries, especially Europe. Arthur Zajonc describes his vision of that idea: “The picture I carried was one in which individuals came from every part of the world to link with others on the basis of anthroposophical spiritual practice, and upon returning home they would remain inwardly connected to those they had met and with whom they worked at the three conferences. -

Copyright C 2004 Cambridge University Press. 1060-1503/04 $9.50 MORRIS, CARPENTER, WILDE, AND THE POLITICAL AESTHETICS OF LABOR By Ruth Livesey IN JUNE 1885 a group of radical intellectual Londoners gathered for the evening at that hub of nineteenth-century free thought, the South Place Institute. The event was organized by the Socialist League, a revolutionary socialist organization which counted William Morris, Eleanor Marx, and Edward Aveling as its most prominent members at that point in time. But this was no ordinary meeting. There were no lectures and no debates, just popular songs and dramatic recitations that had been carefully rehearsed by the membership in order to entertain for the cause. William Morris drafted a poem for the occasion, urging these “Socialists at Play” to cast their “care aside while song and verse/Touches our hearts.” Play, however, was not to lull the audience into a “luxurious mood”: War, labour, freedom; noble words are these; But must we hymn them in our hours of ease? We must be men (Morris 1885) Morris’s address reminded his audience that their political beliefs permeated both work and play. The members of the Socialist League should structure their leisure like warriors awaiting the call to arms: “Amidst their ballad sings the trumpet voice;/About the sheep-cotes girt for war they go.” The revolution was so self-evidently imminent for these socialists in the fraught mid-1880s that like Morris’s imagined medieval warriors they needed to display a readiness for struggle in all aspects of their lives and let “the cause cling”: About the book we read, the song we sing, Cleave to our cup and hover o’er our plate, And by our bed at morn and even wait.
