Introduction The aim of the present study is to analyze adaptations of the Narcissus theme in Western European culture between 1890 and 1930 in texts by a number of authors, reaching from Oscar Wilde and Paul Valéry, over Sigmund Freud and Rainer Maria Rilke to Hermann Hesse and Joachim Gasquet. This is a period which sees a continued elaboration of the equation of Narcissus and artist, which digs deeper into the psychological and existential condition of Narcissus, and which witnesses the groundbreaking transformation of the Narcissus figure into the meta-psychological notion of narcissism. Furthermore, and this will be the main contention of this study, one important way in which the Narcissus theme is put to use during this period is as a figuration of an increasingly problematic understanding of the modern subject. Two series of questions, coupled with two general theses, will guide the investigation. The first series of questions concerns how mythic material is incorporated into alien discourse. What elements of the story are emphasized in its modern reactivations? Which historical periods and individual texts in the Narcissus tradition do the modern adaptations draw on? How do different versions of the story clash with each other? What other stories, ideas, notions and settings is the myth confronted with? How do narrative, pictorial and conceptual renderings of the theme relate to each other? This line of questioning rests on the conviction that in any culture, thinking and writing does not begin from scratch. When we wish to express something new, we nevertheless return to old sources to reactivate meanings and reformulate problems in the novel context. Significant cultural material is recycled in a process where meanings shift, disappear and resurface and signifying structures break down, merge and reappear. The impetus for this side of the investigation is gained from the last decades’ research into the phenomenon of intertexuality, which has highlighted the insight that texts are made from texts, that they produce meaning in their relation to other texts. The primary concern for this part of the investigation is descriptive: it aims at elucidating how structures and elements of the individual texts relate to other structures and elements in the intra- as well as the intertextual context. It will try to lay bare the substructures of the manifest texts and clarify their interrelations as well as the relations to the context of the Narcissus tradition. If the first range of questions confronts the Narcissus theme with a how, the second concerns its what. What meaning is attributed to the theme? What complex of ideas comes into play in its reactivation? What philosophical, aesthetic, moral, existential and psychological questions are raised through the evocation of Narcissus and in what way does 4 the theme aid in answering them? In short, what does Narcissus mean for the authors of the turn of the century? This side of the investigation is interpretive in its practice and hermeneutical

They must also be tolerant to high daytime temperatures, typical of Atlanta’s summer months, and cold hardy in the winter months. Atlanta is located in USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7b/8a. • Water wise. Urban tree wells are surrounded by impervious surfaces and thus, are highly susceptible to periods of drought. Suitable plants must be able to survive periods of low rainfall. • Pollution tolerant. Vehicle exhaust may leave deposits and pollutants on plant foliage, which can kill sensitive plants. • Encourage wildlife. Flowering plants attract insects such as butterflies while others provide food sources for birds and other wildlife. • Grown locally. Many of the plants listed are native to the Atlanta area, and all can be found at local nurseries.

There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses. German modernist novels simulate the mind and expose the indistinct limits of that simulation. Simulation is understood in this study as defined by Jean Baudrillard in Simulacra and Simulation. The novels discussed in this work include Thomas Mann’s Der Zauberberg; Hermann Broch’s Die Schlafwandler; Alfred Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz: Die Geschichte von Franz Biberkopf; and, in the conclusion, Irmgard Keun’s Das Kunstseidene Mädchen is offered as a field of future inquiry. These primary sources disclose at least three aspects of the mind that are resistant to discrete articulation; that is, the uploading or extraction of the mind into a foreign context. A fourth is proposed, but only provisionally, in the conclusion of this work. The aspects resistant to uploading are defined and discussed as situatedness, plurality, and adaptability to ambiguity. Each of these aspects relates to one of the three steps of mind- uploading summarized in Nick Bostrom’s treatment of the subject.

    CHAPTER 4 EDUCATION, SOCIETY AND THE INDIVIDUAL INTRODUCTION Hesse placed supreme importance on the value of the individual. From his youth he had rebelled against the imposition of social authority on the individual, and he continued this resistance throughout his adult life. The First World War had a profound impact on his thinking and writing. He described this as a ‘cruel awakening’ (Hesse, 1974c, p. 10) and in the years following the War he found himself utterly at odds with the spirit of his times in his native Germany. He spent much of his life in Switzerland. Hesse saw himself as an ‘unpolitical man’ and even when writing about the War, he wanted to guide the reader ‘not into the world theatre with its political problems but into his innermost being, before the judgement seat of his very personal conscience’ (p. 11). In Hesse’s novels and short stories, many of which have an educational focus, the theme of individual spiritual striving is paramount. His early novel, Peter Camenzind (Hesse, 1969), provides a fictionalised biographical account of the title character’s life, from his early years in the mountains, through his time as a student and his development as a writer, to his later life of devotion to a disabled friend and his elderly father. Beneath the Wheel (Hesse, 1968b) details the traumatic school experiences and tragic post-school life of a talented student. Siddhartha (Hesse, 2000a) takes the title character on a journey of self-discovery, with an exploration of dramatically different modes of life: asceticism, the world of business, sexual liberation, and oneness with nature, among others.

    Report under the Article 17 of the Habitats Directive European Environment Period 2007-2012 Agency European Topic Centre on Biological Diversity Narcissus juncifolius Annex V Priority No Species group Vascular plants Regions Alpine, Atlantic, Mediterranean Narcissus juncifolius is endemic to France, occuring in Alpine, Atlantic and Mediterranean regions. The taxonomy of this taxon is not clear. According to the information on the IUCN red list website the synonym species Narcissus assoanus ssp. praelongus is present in Spain. However, Spain did not report the species. In the IUCN red list the species is assessed as Least Concern (LC) with stable population trend. It is not assessed in the French red list (2012). The overall conclusion in the Alpine region is "Unfavorable Inadequate" due to a negative population trend. It occurs with a population of 1000-5000 individuals. The main distribution area of Narcissus juncifolius is in the Mediterranean region of France. However, the population is "Unknown", but assessed as "Favorable". As in the previous report, the conservation status is "Favorable" in all components. In the French Atlantic region is assessed as "Favorable" in all components (reported for the first time). The species occurs with a population of 10000-50000 individuals Main threats (mainly low rank) are grazing, cultivation, urbanisation, modification of cultural practices and mining. No changes in overall conservation status between 2001-06 and 2007-12 reports in Alpine and Mediterranean region. The species was not reported
