Throughout 1983 and 1984, the band toured across North America releasing their self-titled debut album in June, 1984. The album went Platinum and featured four hit singles: “New Girl Now,” “Burning In Love,” “Wave Babies” and “Stay In The Light.” Their second album, The Big Prize was released in February, 1986 … it also went Platinum and featured four hit singles: “Feel It Again,” “What Does It Take,” “All Along You Knew” and “Bad Attitude” which was featured on the series finale of NBC’s “Miami Vice.” That same year, they won a Juno Award for “Group of the Year.” In 1987, they released their third album, Racing After Midnight … a slightly harder-edged, more guitar- oriented album that spawned a European tour with Status Quo and a headlining tour across Canada. So runs the epigraph, taken from the Biblical book of Job, to the Australian songwriter Nick Cave’s collected lyrics.1 Using such a quotation invites anyone who listens to Cave’s songs to see them as instructive addresses, a feeling compounded by an on-record intensity matched by few in the history of popular music. From his earliest work in the late 1970s with his bands The Boys Next Door and The Birthday Party up to his most recent releases with long- time collaborators The Bad Seeds, it appears that he is intent on spreading some sort of message. This essay charts how Cave’s songs, which as Robert Eaglestone notes take religion as ‘a primary discourse that structures and shapes others’,2 consistently use the blues as a platform from which to deliver his dispatches. The first chapter draws particularly on recent writing by Andrew Warnes and Adam Gussow to elucidate why Cave’s earlier songs have the blues and his Christian faith dovetailing so frequently.

  • Junior Boys B.B.C. English Info
The white noise backdrop of modern life means that without some fine-tuning on our part, even established and progressive artists can become elusive on occasion. But since musical creativity involves a healthy drive to self-determination and often a keen collaborative spirit, out of earshot doesn’t necessarily mean out of action. Certainly not in the case of Junior Boys, who’ve readied a new album, Big Black Coat - due for release on 5 February 2016. A strikingly energised and intuitively dynamic set that reconnects them to their techno roots without sacrificing their soulful pop nous or riding a revivalist wave, it’s also shaped by what Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus have been doing in the five years since their last release. The Hamilton, Ontario duo have racked up four albums since they formed in 1999, including their 2004 debut Last Exit and 2006’s So This Is Goodbye, two rapturous – and rapturously received – records that were as poignant as they were impeccably produced, and prefigured Album: ‘Big Black Coat’ the digital R&B so beloved of many an artist in the last few years. Two albums followed, the Cat No: Slang50089 Format: CD / LP / Digital last in 2011, by which time high expectation had begun to leach the fun from making records. Release: 05.02.2016 Label: City Slang The years since then have been filled with nourishing independent pursuits. Greenspan released two solo singles and a collaborative EP on Jiaolong, the label run by his old friend and fellow Hamiltonian Dan Snaith (aka Caribou, Daphni – Greenspan also mixed several TRACKLISTING songs from Swim).

Minor Compositions Open Access Statement – Please Read This book is open access. This work is not simply an electronic book; it is the open access version of a work that exists in a number of forms, the traditional printed form being one of them. All Minor Compositions publications are placed for free, in their entirety, on the web. This is because the free and autonomous sharing of knowledges and experiences is important, especially at a time when the restructuring and increased centralization of book distribution makes it difficult (and expensive) to distribute radical texts effectively. The free posting of these texts does not mean that the necessary energy and labor to produce them is no longer there. One can think of buying physical copies not as the purchase of commodities, but as a form of support or solidarity for an approach to knowledge production and engaged research (particularly when purchasing directly from the publisher). The open access nature of this publication means that you can: • read and store this document free of charge • distribute it for personal use free of charge • print sections of the work for personal use • read or perform parts of the work in a context where no financial transactions take place However, it is against the purposes of Minor Compositions open access approach to: • gain financially from the work • sell the work or seek monies in relation to the distribution of the work • use the work in any commercial activity of any kind • profit a third party indirectly via use or distribution of the work • distribute in or through a commercial body (with the exception of academic usage within educational institutions) The intent of Minor Compositions as a project is that any surpluses generated from the use of collectively produced literature are intended to return to further the development and production of further publications and writing: that which comes from the commons will be used to keep cultivating those commons.

Our first Boston show was with DYS, The Mighty COs and The AMERICA’S HARDCORE FU’s. It was very intense for us. We were so intimidated. Future generations will fuck up again THE OUTPATIENTS got started in 1982 by Deep Wound bassist Scott Helland At least we can try and change the one we’re in and his older brother Eric “Vis” Helland, guitarist/vocalist of Mace — a 1980-82 — Deep Wound, “Deep Wound” Metal group that played like Motörhead but dug Black Flag (a rare blend back then). The Outpatients opened for bands like EAST COAST Black Flag, Hüsker Dü and SSD. Flipside called ’em “one of the most brutalizing live bands In 1980, over-with small cities and run-down mill towns across the Northeast from the period.” 1983’s gnarly Basement Tape teemed with bored kids with nothing to do. Punk of any kind earned a cultural demo included credits that read: “Play loud in death sentence in the land of stiff upper-lipped Yanks. That cultural isolation math class.” became the impetus for a few notable local Hardcore scenes. • Transforming and Reconstructing Punk Politics Into Chicana Punk Social Activism 1977-1989
“We Don’t Need the English!” Transforming and Reconstructing Punk Politics into Chicana Punk Social Activism 1977-1989 Jocelyn Isabel Aguilera Aguilera 1 On June 23, 2019, punk vocalist Alicia Armendariz Velasquez organized the unveiling of Dolores Huerta Square throughout East Los Angeles’s 1st street. Supporting the unveiling event, local punk band Trap Girl, Xicana post-punk band ELLA, and Armendariz Velasquez’s group The Alice Bag Band played in honor of Dolores Huerta who had co-founded United Farm Workers and coined the phrase, "Si, Se Puede.” With a feeling of empowerment in the air, Armendariz captured the spirit of Huerta's ongoing work at the unveiling, melodically screaming, "You say justice is colorblind. I know you're lying. White justice doesn't work for me!!!”1 The significance of the unveiling brings attention to the often-overlooked civil rights leader Huerta. But it also reveals how Chicana punk rockers or Chicana punkeras led to an East Los Angeles plaza being named in honor of Dolores Huerta. Since the beginning of punk around the mid-1970s in England, the subculture’s foundation adopted a political conscience, DIY aesthetic, and the releasing of teenage angst through fast-tempo music. The punk scene had its roots in England in the mid-1970s, where the band The Sex Pistols quickly gained national attention through songs such as "God Save the Queen” and "Anarchy in the UK" that critiqued the "fascist regime" of England and called for a less regulated form of government.2 Ultimately, the bold commentary about England’s government and societal conformity manifested the ideas of a working-class band into a responsive subculture to the political climate.
