______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 3 CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

This year has been a positive one even though Canterbury representative teams did not rise to the heady levels of 2005. Our Under 15A and Under 15B girls teams were first at their respective national tournaments and the Under 18 Men were second at their national tournament. The Tandoori Palace Canterbury Cats were second in the National League final. The Hatch Cup team was second and the Collier team was fifth. Congratulations to those teams and also to the other representative teams both junior and senior who donned the red and black to play on our behalf.

It has been a great privilege to be part of the Canterbury Hockey Board over this year as the Board has put together the strategic plan as well as reorganising itself to deal with the governance side of hockey. All of the Board members have worked hard to resolve issues, plan forward, maintain high standards and to take responsibility for their role in making Canterbury Hockey the number one hockey province in New Zealand.

In a time of shrinking available public funding the Board has managed the finances so that most members of the hockey community have capitalised. Thank you members for your time and effort.

As an Association we are thankful for the many sponsors who have been supportive by providing time, product, contra or funding which has ensured many of our players and supporters have had the opportunity to extend themselves.

There have been a number of changes in the way the Canterbury Hockey office works; these changes have resulted in more pertinent social functions and a refinement in the way business runs. Congratulations to Derek Torkington, the staff - both administrative and facilities for being available and open in their communication with all of us, players and supporters.

To all members of Canterbury Hockey be proud of your Association, your staff and Board, your players and yourselves for each of us makes the hockey community a terrific place to be and to be part of. Your contribution is valued no matter how large or small it is. Please continue so that we are able to grow into the number one hockey association in New Zealand.

Let us look forward to 2007 with enthusiasm.

Anthony Koorey Board Chairperson

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 4 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT

Each year seems to give Canterbury Hockey new challenges and this year is no exception. During the 2005/2006 timetable we have successfully run the Masters national finals, test matches against the Japanese and Malaysian women culminating with the national Rankin and Hatch Cups finals for the junior grades.

We have continued to maintain a sound financial position although with the increases in costs and legislation making it more difficult for our funding agencies to continue to give grants at the same level as previous years.

Once again the Board of Canterbury Hockey has shown its commitment and the extra hours that they put in are much appreciated by myself and the office staff. Without such dedicated people hockey would be much the poorer.

This year the Finance Committee, under the chairmanship of Adrian Mouldey, has kept a tight control over the finances. With costs continually increasing and our reliance on funding it has been a difficult year. The work done by Paul Duggan & Associates together with the rest of the Finance Committee, who also give of their own time, has ensured that we are in a sound financial position.

The Canterbury Hockey Foundation Trust, under the chairmanship of Peter Cox, is an integral part of our financial position; the Foundation is the avenue for all our turf replacement funding and ensures we have sufficient funding in place for the bank funding we have needed to get for the replacement of our turfs

Anthony Koorey as our Chairman, has led the Board well, and with a subtle change in direction the Board is now focusing on strategic planning for the future as well as ensuring we adhere to Hockey NZ and Canterbury Hockey policies and procedures.

There has been very little change in the staffing structure this year and with only some minor hour changes we are seeing the benefit of Steve Sheppard, our Sponsorship and Marketing Manager, assisting with the updating of our web pages - this has been much appreciated.

As in other years the staff continues to work long hours for the betterment of hockey and the Board and myself appreciate the commitment they have all put in for the 2006 year.

While our representative teams did not achieve the outstanding record of the previous year, once again we were up in the top range of provinces.

With the high standard of the coaches and players we have in Canterbury I am sure that we will once again be the top province in New Zealand.

Repairs to the turf have taken place on the No. 2 turf and work will be starting on the No. 1 turf in November to rectify the bubbling that has taken place due to the glue not setting.

The completion of the stand should take place in 2007 which will enhance our complex and give better viewing areas from the stand overlooking No. 1 turf.

Derek Torkington Chief Executive Officer ______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 5 SPONSORSHIP AND MARKETING REPORT

INTRODUCTION 2006 was a challenging yet successful year from a sponsorship and marketing perspective. The continued popularity of mid-week open and masters has seen more and more people playing hockey. The challenge is getting these and the club players to attend the Cats and Cavaliers NHL games, support the various Canterbury representative teams and get involved in the various fundraising events.

It is important to support our sponsors by purchasing their goods and services wherever possible, to ensure maximum value from their sponsorship. The success of our representative teams has a great effect on spectator interest and appeal. Through mutual support we can enjoy success both on and off the field. This is particularly important given the increasingly competitive entertainment market that we operate in.

SPONSORSHIP The Canterbury Hockey Association is privileged to have such a committed group of companies who continue to support us financially. Most of these organisations have a direct link with hockey, through past and current players. The challenge here is to expand the pool of sponsors, so that we become less reliant on the same organisations. The following individuals and companies deserve acknowledgement:

Tandoori Palace Tandoori Palace was the naming sponsor of the Tandoori Palace Canterbury Cats for the second straight year. Thank you to Anup Nathu for the support and the commitment that Tandoori Palace has made again this year. This commitment has extended to other hockey teams who have held highly successful fundraising banquet dinners at the Tandoori Palace restaurants.

Scenic Circle Hotels Scenic Circle Hotels were the naming sponsors of the Scenic Circle Hotels Canterbury Cavaliers for the third straight year. Thank you to Lani and Earl Hagaman for their support of the Cavaliers and Canterbury Hockey in general. Thanks are also due to Jared Riwai- Couch and Nickie Wellbourn for their work this season. Scenic Circle Hotel’s commitment has extended to hosting the annual awards dinners and various functions throughout the year.

Coastal Print – Official Clothing Supplier Coastal Print have long been sponsors and preferred suppliers to Canterbury Hockey. This year Coastal Print became Canterbury Hockey’s exclusive clothing supplier. The custom made uniforms they designed and made were of outstanding quality and the envy of many opposing teams. To Lee, Kirsten and Briget thank you so much for all your hard work and continued support.

Just Hockey – Official Equipment Supplier Just Hockey is another long term sponsor, whose support we could not do without. Andy Innes and his team continue to supply excellent quality equipment to Canterbury Hockey. This support extends to generously sponsoring “player of the day” prizes at the various tournaments and games that Canterbury Hockey hosts. To Andy Innes and the team thank you so much for all your continued support.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 6

Lincoln University Lincoln University continues to supply sports scholarships to hockey players. These comprehensive scholarships are a great asset in attracting top quality players to the Canterbury region. To Peter Magson and all the team at Lincoln University thanks so much for the provision of these scholarships.

Other Sponsors To all of the Canterbury Hockey sponsors we thank you for the significant contributions that you all make. We are very fortunate to have such loyal organisations supporting us. Your support helps keep hockey affordable for all players at all levels in the Canterbury Community.

FUNDING GRANTS The Canterbury Hockey Association has enjoyed strong support from the various charity gaming associations. Total grant income decreased 5.7 per cent on the last financial year. It should be noted however that last year we received a one-off $50,000 grant for replacement turf costs. If this amount is taken out of consideration, grant income for 2006 increased 11.9 per cent. This is an outstanding result given that the total funds pool available, to all sports and charities, decreased 19 per cent on last year!

Thanks are due to the Canterbury Community Trust, Scottwood Trust, Lion Foundation, Pub Charity and New Zealand Community Trust for their significant support.

FUNDRAISING FUNCTIONS The Canterbury Hockey Association ran two major fundraising events in 2006 - the annual golf tournament and the annual Casino Dinner and Auction. The golf tournament attracted 19 teams and was won by MB & MA Holdings. A lovely day was had by all at the picturesque Waitikiri Golf Course. The 2007 golf tournament will be held earlier in the season to avoid clashing with so many other golf tournaments.

The annual Casino dinner was a huge success thanks to having Dr Ric Charlesworth as the speaker. For the first time ever the dinner sold out two weeks prior to the event! Ric was extremely well received and attracted many non-hockey people to the dinner. The auction also went well, raising much needed funds for the Cats and Cavaliers. Thanks to the Christchurch Casino for putting on the event and to Ric Charlesworth (speaker), Malcolm Ellis (MC) and Bryan Andrews (auctioneer) for their stellar efforts.

MEDIA AND PROMOTION Canterbury Hockey Association constantly seeks to promote hockey at all levels of the game. Ideally we would like to do more media promotions, but the costs are prohibitive. We are therefore extremely grateful to the following people and organisations for their coverage of hockey during the 2006 season:

− 92 More FM Canterbury - official promotional partner − Kevin Tutty - The Press − Malcolm Ellis, Brain Ashby and - Newstalk ZB − Nick Tolerton – Christchurch Star

Thanks to CTV also for covering the Cats and Cavaliers National Hockey League games and a game from the Hatch Cup. We would really like to get club games televised so will be looking for sponsorship to support this initiative.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 7

THE FUTURE 2007 will be a challenging year from a sponsorship and marketing perspective. The Canterbury Hockey Association is widely regarded as a leading administrative model for our sport. That said we are under significant pressure to keep playing costs down as overhead costs continue to rise.

New sponsorship is becoming more and more difficult to secure as organisations get barraged with requests from literally thousands of sporting groups, individuals and charity organisations. Contra (donation of goods and services) sponsorship has grown significantly this year. On the flip side cash sponsorship is decreasing, given the stringent financial accountability organisations face.

It is therefore imperative that we look for new and innovative ways to grow income. This will require participation from the Canterbury Hockey community as a whole. Players, clubs and CHA staff will need to continue to support fundraising initiatives, but at a greater level. Thus we will need to work smarter and look for ways to drive sponsors’ business, to encourage them to continue to sponsor Canterbury Hockey.

The strategy for this is as follows:

1) Work closely with existing sponsors to maximise returns for both parties. 2) Identify new and sustainable income streams, through sponsorship, functions and fundraising opportunities. 3) Get the clubs more involved in fundraising events to help keep players costs down. 4) Develop a culture that encourages hockey players to attend games and tournaments hosted by the Canterbury Hockey Association.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank everyone who has helped with the various functions and fundraising events during the 2006 season.

Steve Sheppard Commercial and Marketing Manager

I report on behalf of the Competitions Committee. The members are all people already very busy with hockey duties but prepared to squeeze yet another meeting into their busy programmes.

I commend to you the following people:

Graham Jackson, as our secretary, prepared meeting agendas, meeting minutes and succinct summaries all promptly circularised to members or to our various clubs and schools. Graham has also served as Draw Steward and with Chris Sales has handled requests for deferments. His close liaison with CHA office staff has been a feature of the season. Mike McIlroy and John Turner, as Register Keepers, have conscientiously checked score cards against registrations and followed up on reported comments. Peter Seymour, at the end of some long days on site, has kept us informed on facility matters. Graeme Wright has been a very reliable link with our umpires, a duty which can be very time- consuming. Derek Torkington, our CEO, is developing a national perspective on hockey and his input at meetings has been valuable. We have appreciated Derek’s willingness to convey our more important decisions to clubs and players. Michelle Baird, Wendy Fitzgerald, Issy Thomson, Mike Harrison and Chris Sales have brought the experiences of many grades to our meetings. Their contribution has been of equal importance to that of members I have singled out.

All in all this has been a very experienced team. The members have discussed rationally without club bias and decided on a wide range of matters.

The mid-season meeting with representatives from clubs and schools was well-attended, kept on track by our President, Richard Munt, and appreciative of the outline of the competitions presented by Graham Jackson.

I believe that the end of season meeting will consider suggestions for further fine-tuning of the structure for the 2007 season.

In conclusion the office staff have been very helpful throughout the season. My thanks to them, the CHA Board and to each member of this committee.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 16 GRASS HOCKEY

Grass Hockey started the 2006 season on 22 April. There were teams in the women's and the men's grades, the same as it has been for a few years now. The players do not change much from season to season. All are involved in the format and decisions that are made within the grass grades, so there are few problems during the season.

The wet spell in the middle of the season was a problem but most games were rescheduled to another ground. Life is simple on the grass. After two rounds teams were split into two pools and then semis and finals.

The finals day was at Nunweek Park as this is the only venue we have now. Congratulations to the Harewood Women and HSOB/Burnside Men for winning their finals. Thank you to the Harewood Club, Dave Crake and his team, for preparing the grounds. Well done boys.

Mike McIlroy did a great job again preparing the draw and taking everyone’s request on board. Not an easy task keeping everyone happy. It has been an enjoyable season supporting players and umpires who turn up every week in all weathers.

Hope to see you all again next season.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 17 FACILITIES

NUNWEEK PARK The Turf This is holding up well and has had only minor flooding throughout the year. The surface maintains its levels all round and it would be considered advantageous to install a cannon watering system. Some Stage 2 lighting will require replacing.

Grounds Once again Bill Lynn has done a sterling job in maintaining the Nunweek facility with painting, fence and goal repairs and turf dressing. The boundary trees will require topping.

Staffing Bill continues to provide voluntary hours well above his contracted hours during the winter months and is prepared to give it another year. Facility staff provide back up during the winter months.

Future 2007 will see the replacement of security netting north and south, new goal nets, the scoreboard will be upgraded, fence repairs done, along with a little colour added by planting. The flagpoles will be put back into position.

Nunweek Park is a very valuable asset to Canterbury Hockey.

PORRITT PARK The Turfs No. 1 Turf is scheduled to be replaced in part during November 2006 and this is scheduled to be completed prior to December. Internationals have been played with Japan and Malaysia, club competitions, representative trials and games and National Hockey League games.

With the variable winds it has been a difficult task at times to water the turf fully as the previous hose connections are now obsolete and it has been budgeted for couplings to be joined to the in-ground water system so that hoses can be connected.

The turf is kept in good trim by constant machine dressing each week when possible; some Stage 1 lighting is due for replacement during February 2007 to improve lux readings.

No 2 Turf is once again being repaired during October 2006; some seams are very bad and some ripples have to be rectified. All Stage 1 lighting has been upgraded during 2006; Stage 2 lights will need replacing in 2008.

Investigations will be made to improve the fencing. There are problems with the turf cleaning as there are no hose connections as well as a lack of power points for easy access.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 18 The Grounds The development of car parks on the western side of the park will take place during the 2007 season and should cause minor disruption and eventually that side will become the main gate.

The warm-up areas alongside the turfs are in place and well used.

The power lines have now been buried in ground from the No. 1 scoreboard which is much better. The Council has installed a pathway on the southern bank which gives access to the proposed car park. The Council has also erected security lighting on the southern poles which provides excellent lighting. The garden areas are good and require considerable work to keep them neat and tidy.

Heavy rain during the year turned the No. 2 turf into a water bed type surface due to a severe blockage in the drain to the river. This was caused by tree roots entering the drain because sealers were not in place.

The Facility The Supporters Club Lounge continues to be popular with good facilities for food and beverage for users. The Supporters Club has installed a trophy cabinet and has also framed photographs of the old and new Porritt Park developments. Framed memorabilia has also been placed on the walls.

All doors downstairs were painted and locks repaired during the year, and some carpet laid in a few areas; the changing rooms are due for painting in 2007.

Stage II development of the stadium is still to be completed and it is anticipated that this may be in 2007.

Staff Facility Staff continue to work well at Porritt and Nunweek Parks to meet the requirements of the hockey community. Mel Rainbow and Bill Lynn have indicated their wish to continue through 2007 and are looking forward to assist in hosting the National Universities Tournament, the National Indian Tournament and the Federation Cup and the inaugural combined senior men’s and women’s tournament during 2007.

We, the staff, Peter, Mel and Bill, look forward to 2007 by assisting in the provision of a good, clean and safe environment for all users of Porritt Park and Nunweek Park.

Peter Seymour Facilities Manager

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 19 COACHING AND DEVELOPMENT REPORT

Kookaburra Summer Camps Two summer camps were again run early in January and were very successful. These camps are going from strength to strength. Thanks to all the coaches who helped out and made these camps the success they were. The Hockey Stars camp did not have as much of an impact this year as it was held in December. Our numbers were up 44per cent on 2005, (which in turn were up 40 per cent on 2004). A total of 182 players attended. The feedback received indicates they were enjoyed by all, especially the chance to watch the Black Sticks train and the autograph session from them as well.

Scottwood Trust Pathway Squads Again these sessions were an excellent vehicle to give the under age representative players a good start to the season. Overall these were very successful and again my thanks go out to the coaches who helped out.

The main aim was to move back to the basics and as such a different skill was concentrated on every week with various drills concentrating on the technique being used.

The attitude of the majority of participants was excellent. They were motivated and wanted to learn. These players would have gained a lot out of the sessions.

Courses Coaching courses that were run during the year were generally well attended. It is getting more and more difficult to fit these in during the season due to turf constraints and time constraints of participants.

We had 17 coaches come through the “Getting Started” courses and the Level One course attracted 22 coaches.

Numerous Kiwi Hockey courses were also held in schools over the year.

The Hockey Ball Because of some excellent feedback from coaches who receive this publication we continued with it again for 2006.

Another six issues were published and sent out to over 300 coaches on our database. These publications feature any up-and-coming events, a coaching drill, an umpiring rule tip, a feature article and anything else I can think off. Our thanks to Just Hockey who have helped with the cost of this publication.

School Visits This year we have contacted in excess of 50 schools with 33 taking up the offer of us coming into their school and taking classes for hockey. To date the ADO’s and myself have had 2900 school children go through the hockey programme.

Unfortunately the weather conspired against us during the middle two terms and a number of visits had to be cancelled.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 20 Council Cup This year we had a number of issues to deal with when organising this competition:

1 The school term started a week later 2 The timing of Easter

This caused problems as we had to fit the competition into a shorter timeframe than usual. Apart from this the competition ran smoothly and as always was a great vehicle for clubs to assess potential players and have some match time before the season started.

Again my thanks to Keith Harvey for the umpire allocations. This continues to assist with the smooth running of the competition.

South Island Super 6 This tournament was again a great success. We had 35 teams from all over the South Island attending, playing on four fields at Porritt Park over two-and-a-half days. Good weather added to the occasion.

This tournament is the last hit out for players before the season starts and is always well patronised.

Regional Clinics Once again Canterbury ran the mid south regional coaching clinics on behalf of Hockey New Zealand. This year clinics were run for Under 15 boys and girls and Under 18 boys and girls. Player numbers are dictated by Hockey New Zealand with each association having a certain number of players they can send. Players come from South Canterbury to Nelson and this is the first stage of talent identification for Hockey New Zealand. All players have a report done on them on how they have performed so they know where they stand. This year the camps ran very smoothly and we were even blessed with fine weather.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 21 2006 REPRESENTATIVE REPORT

Under 21 This year both teams struggled at this tournament. The men struggled to find a coach prior to the tournament, this did affect their build up and the women had lost a majority of the players who won the tournament the previous year and were definitely in a rebuilding phase.

Results for both teams: Men Women v Central won 8 – 3 v Capital won 3 – 2 v Auckland lost 1 – 4 v Central lost 1 - 3 v Capital lost 3 – 5 v Southern won 4 - 1 v Northern drew 1 – 1 v Auckland lost 0 - 3 v Southern won 7 – 1 v Midlands lost 2 - 4 v Midlands won 4 – 1 v Northern lost 2 - 3 v Northern lost 3 – 5 (3/4) v Capital won 1 – 0 (5/6)

Under 18 These teams performed creditably at their respective tournaments. This year we were also able to get a development team into the National U18 girls tournament which was an added bonus.

Men The men had an excellent tournament and finished a creditable second place, losing a close final to North Harbour.

Results at tournament were as follows: v Thames Valley won 9 – 0 v Nelson won 13 – 0 v Wanganui won 4 – 0 v Manawatu drew 0 – 0 v Waikato won 6 – 1 (QF) v Wellington won 2 – 1 (SF) v North Harbour lost 1 – 2 (F)

My thanks go to Andrew Hastie and Simon Bate who did some excellent work preparing this team for tournament. It is not often you get a winning NHL coach to work with a team at this level.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 22 Women The women’s team performed well taking out fourth. This tournament also is a very tough one as well, with seven games in six days but they stuck at their task with a very creditable result.

Results are as follows: v Taranaki won 3 – 0 v North Harbour won 4 – 0 v Otago lost 0 – 1 v Marlborough won 9 – 0 v Wellington won 2 – 1 (QF) v Northland lost 1 – 2 (SF) v Wairarapa lost 0 – 1 (3/4)

Again, my thanks to Wendy Fitzgerald and Lisa Watson, who looked after this team.

The development team that went away ended up in the same pool as two of the top four teams, however, despite some losses this team played to win every game and ended up in seventeenth position.

Results were as follows: v Northland lost 1 – 8 v Tauranga lost 1 – 3 v Hawkes Bay lost 1 – 3 v Wairarapa lost 0 – 3 v Bay of Plenty won 5 – 0 v Marlborough drew 3 – 3 v Otago Country won 9 – 0

Thanks to Mark Beatson who helped with trainings and to Issy Thomson who took the team away at short notice.

Under 15 The Under 15A boys had a very tough competition and played very well in getting third place. This is a young team and will be better for the experience. Once again this was a tough tournament with seven games in six days.

Results were as follows: v South Canterbury won 4 – 0 v Tauranga won 5 – 0 v Counties Manukau won 2 – 1 v Otago lost 0 – 3 v Waikato won 7 – 5 (QF.2 all after full time we won 5 – 3 on strokes) v Wairarapa lost 2 – 3 (SF) v Otago won 1 – 0 (3/4)

The under 15B boys had a tough tournament in Horowhenua finishing middle of the competition. This tournament is a mixture of A and B teams. They finished third in theiur pool behind Auckland B and Marlborough and lost the first crossover.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 23 Results as follows: v Marlborough lost 0 – 2 v Auckland B lost 1 – 4 v Waikato B won 5 – 4 v Wanganui B won 8 – 0 v Hawkes Bay B won 4 – 0 v Manawatu B lost 1 – 2 v Waikato B won 4 – 0

Thanks to Matt Cunningham, Russ Fergus and Ian Gillespie who looked after the team.

Girls The Under 15 girls won their tournament for the second year in a row which is a great achievement. This team played consistently all week and were deserved winners. It is a great result to win this tournament and even harder to do it again.

Results were as follows: v Bay of Plenty won 7 – 0 v Waikato won 2 – 0 v Poverty Bay won 10 – 0 v Wairarapa won 6 – 0 v Manawatu won 2 – 1 (QF) v North Harbour won 3 – 2 (SF) v Waikato won 3 – 2 (F 1 - 1 after full time we won 3 – 2 on strokes)

Again my thanks go out to Cathy Baker and Matt Ling who worked hard to make this a winning team. The Under 15B girls made it a clean sweep for Canterbury in this age group. This team worked well together right from the time the team was picked till the end of the tournament.

Diane Lancaster created an excellent environment and the team responded in kind.

Results were as follows: v Horowhenua won 9 – 0 v Wellington B won 3 – 0 v Bay of Plenty won 3 – 2 v North Harbour won 2 – 1 v Thames Valley won 4 – 0 v Waikato B won 2 – 1 (SF) v Auckland B won 3 – 1 (F)

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 31 LINCOLN UNIVERSITY HOCKEY SCHOLARSHIP REPORT

Canterbury Hockey continued its association with Lincoln University this year. The applications for 2006 were well up on the previous year and we had in excess of 30 players wanting to be involved.

This year Haeleigh Albon was named hockey scholar of the year. Haeleigh is a hard worker and her performance at the U21 tournament, her elevation to the Canterbury Cats along with Haeleigh being named in the Junior Black Sticks squad all contributed to this award.

Canterbury Hockey would like to thank Lincoln University for their support and partnership on the scheme which has now become a well established part of Canterbury Hockey and is one of the biggest draw cards CHA has for getting new blood into the region.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 32 TOURNAMENTS

Canterbury hosted three national tournaments in 2006.

In March 2006 Canterbury hosted the National Masters tournament. This is the largest tournament on the hockey calendar and 52 teams entered in the four men’s and four women’s age groups. Canterbury entered in the eight categories and competed most successfully. The organising committee were very thorough in their approach to the tournament and are to be congratulated on the successful planning.

Canterbury once again hosted the Rankin Cup tournament in August and the participating Christchurch school representatives planned another successful tournament. A small group of junior hockey appointed personnel successfully co-ordinated the Hatch Cup tournament at which 27 teams competed. The Nunweek Park secondary school tournament was held again in 2006 and this provided an opportunity for those schools not participating in the national secondary tournaments to participate with their peers.

In 2006, Canterbury Hockey hosted three home games for the Tandoori Palace Canterbury Cats and two home games for the Scenic Circle Hotels Canterbury Cavaliers.

Canterbury Hockey is fortunate that when tournaments and National League games are allocated, there are willing numbers in the hockey community to assist in the planning and organising along with the hockey staff. This is a key to the smooth running of event hosting in Canterbury and is a common theme on tournament evaluation reports from participating teams.

In 2007 Canterbury will host the Secondary Schoolgirls Federation Cup in August, and the planned combined senior men’s and women’s tournament in September. Being played in April is the National University tournament and in June the National Indian tournament.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 33 CANTERBURY JUNIOR HOCKEY

Junior Competitions The competitions this year utilised yet another venue that became available to junior hockey players. The JMC now currently administers competitions at Porritt Park, Nunweek Park, St Margaret’s College, Burnside High School, Boys High School, Girls High School, Sydenham, Medbury School, Cathedral Grammar School, Wycola, and various grass grounds. The administration and supervision of all those venues went smoothly and with very few problems. The few issues the JMC was required to deal with occurred where either a parent spectator and or a coach went beyond the bounds of acceptable behaviour.

Playing numbers for 2006 were static with increases in girls numbers and a decline in boys numbers. The decline in boys playing hockey is a concern to Canterbury Hockey and something the Board/JMC is addressing.

It was however a very competitive tournament with some excellent games played. Thanks to Jenna Takamore and Gaby Leighs for their efforts as Tournament Controllers and to Coastal Print for their sponsorship of the event.

Finances The Junior Management Committee operated close to budgeted expectations

Coaching and Development Southern Stars Coaching Academy this year had 64 field players and 12 goal keepers attending. This elite coaching programme was extended to five weeks in 2006 and was a great success. Thanks go to the many top coaches involved for assisting in this player development programme.

Junior Umpiring The new programme made considerable progress in 2006, building on the inaugural year of 2005. A team of full time coaches worked diligently with the umpires throughout the season. A monitoring system was put in place to assist in the coaching and ultimate grading of the umpires. Graeme Wright, Mandy Watts, and Ray Webster worked with the 11-a-side umpires and Jo Steele, Te Paea McGregor, and Ashley Neale worked with the Super 8 Umpires. Progress has been considerable and optimism is high that there will be further progress in the next couple of seasons as the umpiring coaching and monitoring programme beds down further. The JMC is optimistic that clubs will do more in terms of their own coaching and development pre-season and within the season to complement the work being done by the JMC/CHUC.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 41 MASTERS

The key to the success of Masters’ Hockey in Canterbury has been the continued dedication and enthusiasm of not only our players, but the conscientious people that have unselfishly contributed their time on a number of committees to provide the appropriate governance of our competitions and tournaments. We are fortunate to have had excellent support from our umpires, facilities staff and the CHA.

The local 2005-2006 season was the starting point of an extraordinarily successful year for Canterbury Masters’ hockey. Players can enter the competition at the age of 30+ for women and 35+ for men. Many of these players are kept in the game of hockey at this stage of their lives by being able to enjoy the strong competition with their peers, without their sport encroaching on their time commitments to young families. At the other end of the spectrum, we retain players who would have otherwise left the sport, citing their inability to keep up with their younger team mates. The advent of the new 55+ grade at national level has further supported the growth of masters’ hockey.

The local competition for the 2005-2006 season was again a hard-fought battle that produced some excellent hockey. The Harewood Club team again dominated the men’s competition, whilst the women’s competition was won again this year by Hornby.

Ashburton continues to field a men’s team which hosts one of our local teams each week. All teams that travelled to Ashburton appreciated the competitive hockey and hospitality provided by the Ashburton team.

Special mention must be made of the outstanding contribution and co-operation we have been afforded by our umpires. Specific acknowledgment and thanks are made to Pam Thompson for her effort in appointing umpires throughout the season and taking responsibility for the draw.

Continued support from our facilities staff in preparing, maintaining and manning the facilities has ensured the smooth running of our competition. Our sincere thanks are extended to them. Also we must acknowledge the support received from the CHA staff in many areas.

The local competition provides the springboard for many of our players to launch their ‘provincial’ and even ‘national’ careers at representative level, which is a goal which may have eluded some in their younger years. The age criterion is 35+ for women and 40+ for men. An increasing number of our Canterbury players are gaining national representative honours. It is evident on the national masters scene that many associations are in awe of the strong presence of the Canterbury contingent at the various tournaments. Our collective support for our teams and our camaraderie is unrivalled.

Canterbury Hockey hosted the National Masters’ tournament in March 2006. Canterbury was well represented in all grades of the competition and the final results were very pleasing. Gold medals were achieved in 35+ women, 40+ women, 45+ women and 50+ men categories, with silver medals awarded to 40+ men and 55+ men. The competition was extremely tough and many of the games were closely fought. In particular, the 45+ women’s grade was one of the more closely contested categories this year. The 50+ men won their final on penalty strokes. Seventeen of our women and twenty five of our men were selected for national teams from this tournament. Thank you to all the coaches and managers whose considerable commitment ensured one of our most successful results to date.

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 42 We are grateful to the CHA for hosting such a successful tournament and I wish to acknowledge specifically the support and advice given by members of our Masters’ Committee to the tournament organising committee. Thanks must also be given to our sponsors who donated funds to assist with the costs of hosting this tournament.

In summary; the continued success, growth and viability of masters’ hockey in Canterbury has been ensured by the players, coaches, managers, committee members and all ancillary support people involved. Their commitment and co-operation have been second to none.

Mary-Anne Dunlop Chairman Masters’ Committee

______CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 44 UMPIRES

The CHUC committee members and umpires once again had a busy season and my thanks to the committee members for the hours they have put into organizing various events. Ted Gilliver stepped into the breach when the appointer resigned and undertook the appointing of the named umpires for the season and my thanks go to Ted as he stood down from that part of his involvement at the end of the previous season. I would also like to extend my thanks to Mandy Watts and Ray Webster who attended Porritt Park every Saturday morning on most occasions prior to 8.00 am to coach the junior umpires. The standard of umpiring at this level showed a marked increase over the previous season and augers well for coming seasons. There are some very promising umpires in the junior ranks and I am sure that many will progress into higher grades in the coming years.

During the season we had an evening for club umpires to sharpen up their skills and this was well attended. My thanks to Nigel Iggo for hosting that evening. It is our intention to hold another of these evenings prior to the commencement of next season and all clubs will be invited to attend. Craig Gribble held a training evening for CHUC umpires at the start of the season and this was well attended and my thanks to Craig for the presentation. Over the course of the season I received a number of complaints about umpires ability and nearly all of these complaints were directed at club umpires. It is in their own interests and of benefit to hockey that the clubs make use of this session next season. To all of the CHUC umpires my thanks for their efforts over the season, I know that with deferments and changes it meant we had to reorganize some appointments and all umpires co-operated fully to ensure things went smoothly. In addition we had a number of umpires who had to stand down due to injury during the season and this did create some shortfalls in some grades.

Next season sees possibly the biggest change in the rules since the removal of the offside rule and that is the deletion of the requirement for a team to have a goalkeeper on the field. Teams will have the option of playing with a fully equipped goalkeeper, a keeper with a face mask or with eleven field players. This will result in umpires being able to commence a game without having to wait until a goalkeeper arrives which is often quite frustrating for umpires and players. This will also mean that umpires will have to be even more vigilant on aspects of dangerous play in the circle and we will be keeping a close eye on this as next season progresses. Umpires are coming to grips with the correct interpretation of the ball hitting the foot. However it is still noticeable that some players still call ‘foot’ every time the ball hits a foot and is not penalized. This could be blown even less if players were to understand the intention of the rule and hopefully clubs and coaches will make sure their players have a clear understanding of this rule next season.

This season saw the committee undertake the review of the Terms and References and this will be considered at a special meeting prior to CHUC’s Annual Meeting later this year. No CHUC committee members are due to stand down this year and all have indicated they will continue. However an appointer will be called for along with a vice chairperson. Finally thanks to all the umpires, CHUC and club, who helped make the season a success.
