Our Under 15A and Under 15B girls teams were first at their respective national tournaments and the Under 18 Men were second at their national tournament. The Tandoori Palace Canterbury Cats were second in the National League final. The Hatch Cup team was second and the Collier team was fifth. Congratulations to those teams and also to the other representative teams both junior and senior who donned the red and black to play on our behalf. It has been a great privilege to be part of the Canterbury Hockey Board over this year as the Board has put together the strategic plan as well as reorganising itself to deal with the governance side of hockey. All of the Board members have worked hard to resolve issues, plan forward, maintain high standards and to take responsibility for their role in making Canterbury Hockey the number one hockey province in New Zealand. In a time of shrinking available public funding the Board has managed the finances so that most members of the hockey community have capitalised. Thank you members for your time and effort. As an Association we are thankful for the many sponsors who have been supportive by providing time, product, contra or funding which has ensured many of our players and supporters have had the opportunity to extend themselves. There have been a number of changes in the way the Canterbury Hockey office works; these changes have resulted in more pertinent social functions and a refinement in the way business runs. Congratulations to Derek Torkington, the staff - both administrative and facilities for being available and open in their communication with all of us, players and supporters. To all members of Canterbury Hockey be proud of your Association, your staff and Board, your players and yourselves for each of us makes the hockey community a terrific place to be and to be part of. Your contribution is valued no matter how large or small it is. Please continue so that we are able to grow into the number one hockey association in New Zealand. Let us look forward to 2007 with enthusiasm. Anthony Koorey Board Chairperson __________________________________________________________________________________________________ CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 4 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT Each year seems to give Canterbury Hockey new challenges and this year is no exception. During the 2005/2006 timetable we have successfully run the Masters national finals, test matches against the Japanese and Malaysian women culminating with the national Rankin and Hatch Cups finals for the junior grades. We have continued to maintain a sound financial position although with the increases in costs and legislation making it more difficult for our funding agencies to continue to give grants at the same level as previous years. Once again the Board of Canterbury Hockey has shown its commitment and the extra hours that they put in are much appreciated by myself and the office staff. Without such dedicated people hockey would be much the poorer. This year the Finance Committee, under the chairmanship of Adrian Mouldey, has kept a tight control over the finances. With costs continually increasing and our reliance on funding it has been a difficult year. The work done by Paul Duggan & Associates together with the rest of the Finance Committee, who also give of their own time, has ensured that we are in a sound financial position. The Canterbury Hockey Foundation Trust, under the chairmanship of Peter Cox, is an integral part of our financial position; the Foundation is the avenue for all our turf replacement funding and ensures we have sufficient funding in place for the bank funding we have needed to get for the replacement of our turfs Anthony Koorey as our Chairman, has led the Board well, and with a subtle change in direction the Board is now focusing on strategic planning for the future as well as ensuring we adhere to Hockey NZ and Canterbury Hockey policies and procedures. There has been very little change in the staffing structure this year and with only some minor hour changes we are seeing the benefit of Steve Sheppard, our Sponsorship and Marketing Manager, assisting with the updating of our web pages - this has been much appreciated. As in other years the staff continues to work long hours for the betterment of hockey and the Board and myself appreciate the commitment they have all put in for the 2006 year. While our representative teams did not achieve the outstanding record of the previous year, once again we were up in the top range of provinces. With the high standard of the coaches and players we have in Canterbury I am sure that we will once again be the top province in New Zealand. Repairs to the turf have taken place on the No. 2 turf and work will be starting on the No. 1 turf in November to rectify the bubbling that has taken place due to the glue not setting. The completion of the stand should take place in 2007 which will enhance our complex and give better viewing areas from the stand overlooking No. 1 turf. Derek Torkington Chief Executive Officer __________________________________________________________________________________________________ CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2006 ANNUAL REPORT 5 SPONSORSHIP AND MARKETING REPORT INTRODUCTION 2006 was a challenging yet successful year from a sponsorship and marketing perspective. The continued popularity of mid-week open and masters has seen more and more people playing hockey. The challenge is getting these and the club players to attend the Cats and Cavaliers NHL games, support the various Canterbury representative teams and get involved in the various fundraising events. It is important to support our sponsors by purchasing their goods and services wherever possible, to ensure maximum value from their sponsorship. The success of our representative teams has a great effect on spectator interest and appeal. Through mutual support we can enjoy success both on and off the field. This is particularly important given the increasingly competitive entertainment market that we operate in. SPONSORSHIP The Canterbury Hockey Association is privileged to have such a committed group of companies who continue to support us financially. Most of these organisations have a direct link with hockey, through past and current players. The challenge here is to expand the pool of sponsors, so that we become less reliant on the same organisations. The following individuals and companies deserve acknowledgement: Tandoori Palace Tandoori Palace was the naming sponsor of the Tandoori Palace Canterbury Cats for the second straight year. Thank you to Anup Nathu for the support and the commitment that Tandoori Palace has made again this year. This commitment has extended to other hockey teams who have held highly successful fundraising banquet dinners at the Tandoori Palace restaurants.

  • Junior Black Sticks Teams Announced
22 September 2011 Media Release Junior Black Sticks teams announced The Under 21 Junior Black Sticks teams have been announced after being put through their paces at a camp held in Papatoetoe this week. The camp was part of Hockey New Zealand’s new Owen G Glenn Future Black Sticks Programme, with Under 21 national coaches Chris Leslie (women) and Grant Edwards (men) selecting the 18 best players from the squads of 30, which were announced in May after the National U21 Tournament. “Key factors that formed the basis of selection, were identifying players that have core skills, are physically capable, are coachable and can follow instructions, as well as having the ability to play at intensity and who can counter attack quickly,” says Under 21’s women’s coach Chris Leslie. Players named in the women’s team include current Black Sticks Amelia Gibson, Samantha Charlton, Julia King and Rhiannon Dennison. They are joined by three up and coming players, midfielder player Shareena Nana and strikers Natasha Cotton and Tara Hall. The women’s team first and only international competition for this year will be in India at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Under-21 Four Nation Women's Hockey Tournament, from 8-12 November. The 18 players named in the Junior Black Sticks Men, include current Black Sticks Squad players Shay Neal, and Kane Russell, along with Development players, midfielder Nick Ross and defender Dwayne Rowsell. Jared Panchia (17), the youngest player in the team and younger brother to Black Sticks player Arun Panchia, has also made the cut.
