Box 515, Waconia, MN 55387, USA ([email protected]) Abstract The geology of the Ellsworth Mountains has become known in detail only within the past 40-45 years, and the wealth of paleontologic information within the past 25 years. The mountains are an anomaly, structurally speaking, occurring at right angles to the Transantarctic Mountains, implying a crustal plate rotation to reach the present location. Paleontologic affinities with other parts of Gondwanaland are evident, with nearly 150 fossil species ranging in age from Early Cambrian to Permian, with the majority from the Heritage Range. Trilobites and mollusks comprise most of the fauna discovered and identified, including many new genera and species. A Glossopteris flora of Permian age provides a comparison with other Gondwana floras of similar age. The quartzitic rocks that form much of the Sentinel Range have been sculpted by glacial erosion into spectacular alpine topography, resulting in eight of the highest peaks in Antarctica. Follow An Island Parish to the Falklands As the BBC2 documentary series returns to the Southern Hemisphere, two seasoned islanders explain why you should look past this far-flung archipelago's chequered history. By Claire Webb Radio Times "Holiday" isn't the first word that springs to mind when you think of the Falklands, but anyone with a soft spot for the BBC2 series An Island Parish – which returns to the Southern Hemisphere this week – will have been captivated by its rugged beaches and spectacular wildlife. Two stars of the show, Richard Hines and Hattie Kilmartin, tell us why they fell in love with this remote corner of the Southern Hemisphere, and why adventurous travellers should sample their archipelago's many charms. Hattie runs the Sea Cabbage Cafe with her husband Kevin, while Richard recently retired to the UK following a seven-year stint as the Falkands' vicar. How did you end up in the Falklands? Richard: My wife Jen and I had made what for us was a courageous decision, effectively to sell up and leave all in UK behind us, and commit ourselves to serve a small and quite close- knit island community. How would we fit in? Would we cope? What would we do if it all went wrong? But that sense of being at home quickly grew and we soon began to take the island community to heart. Hattie: I grew up in the Cumbria. After university I discovered that cooking was a great way of seeing remote parts of the world – I cooked in Outer Mongolia on horseback treks, in northern Russia in fishing camps, and 19 years ago I came to the Falklands to cook in a wildlife and fishing lodge for six months. -

FALKLANDS 360˚ EXPLORE UNTRAMMELED ISLANDS ON OUR 1ST-EVER CIRCUMNAVIGATION: LINGER LONGER AMID WILDLIFE & GLORIOUS LANDSCAPES ABOARD NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ORION | 2016 TM DEAR TRAVELER, It was in February 1976, after a long, long voyage from New Zealand to the Ross Sea to the Antarctic Peninsula that I first set eyes on the Falkland Islands. Nearly a month of ice and sea suddenly gave way to verdant greens and even wildflowers. We languished in the tussock grass amid the greatest concentrations of sea birds I had ever seen—black-browed albatross (there are over 150,000 breeding pairs here), plus penguins— rockhopper and Magellanic—sea lions, elephant seals, and more. And that’s not all: a hearty, hospitable people with British roots live here. And, at times, we were invited into homes for ‘afternoon tea.’ All of us were delighted by the benign beauty and relative calm of this place while, at the same time, it teemed with nature in myriad forms. It’s not surprising that many have referred to the Falklands archipelago as the ‘Galápagos of the South.’ We were only there for 3 days, and none of us wanted to leave. And I’ve wanted to offer a focused Falklands itinerary ever since, but hesitated because people kept saying that there won’t be demand—so close to Antarctica without going there. But now, 40 years later, I’m convinced this is pure ‘balderdash.’ The more you know about the Falklands, the more you will be convinced that it’s worth the singular focus. So, we’re delighted to offer our 1st-ever circumnavigation of these most remarkable islands. -
