Seventy-Eight Years of Progress at Assumption College

ASSUMPTION COLLEGE is celebrating this year the Seventy-Eighth Anniversary of its administration by the Basilian Fathers. When Father Dennis O'Connor of the Congregation of St. Basil arrived in the village of Sandwich in August, 1870, with three other Basilian priests and the magnificent sum of $300.00, he took over the administration of a school thot had been conducted under other auspices from 1857. The origins of Assumption College may be traced back to the return of the Jesuits to Assumption Parish in I 843. Father Pierre Point, the Jesuit pastor, was on exceptionolly astute man and observed throughout his parish an appalling illiteracy and ignorance. His parish extended twenty miles along the and L11ke St. Clair and as far south as the Irish Mission of Maidstone; in addition the parish conducted missions in Belle River, Tecumseh, Stoney Point, Chatham, Walpole, Raleigh and Tilbury. The parish numbered some 3,000 souls who were almost exclusively Frend1- Canadian in nationality. Father Point immediately introduced a network of elementary French-speaking schools in his parish, establishing by 1846 thirteen schools with an average enrollment of 80 to I 00 students. His schools were among the first elementary schools of any kind in Western Ontario and anticipated by several years the introduction of public schools supported by governmental taxation ( 1854). He encountered considerable opposition from members of his flock who remained unconvinced that there were benefits to be derived from education commensurate with their cost and maintenance. The Civil authority also· was rather hodile in the beginning, since the Ontario system of education under the direction of Dr. Egerton Ryerson was then only in the process of formation and the principle of denominational schools was not a matter of agreement.

In spite of the faltering enthusiasm and latent antagonism that his project evoked, Father Point not only proceeded with his plans, but enlarged upon them. Recognizing the importance of secondary education, he was enabled to open a high school for girls in the parish presbytery in 1852 through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Antoine Beaubien of Detroit. (The first secondary school, or high school, was opened in the Windsor area in 1871 when the combined population of Windsor and Sandwich totaled 5,413.) In 1855 a secondary school for boys was erected on the parish grounds and was opened in 1857. The curriculum of Le College de l'Assomption consisted of preparatory, commercial and classical (high school) courses. The included laymen teaching under the direction of the Jesuit Fathers. During its early years instruction was given through the medium of the French language. When Father Point and the Jesuits left the parisn and the college in 1859, the school fell upon days of extreme adversity. Its survival was due principally to the- indomitable zeal of Mr. Theodore Girardot who was successively teacher, doan and principal. Mr. Girardot was born in France in 1824 and devoted his life in Canada to the cause of education. lJ After heading the college for several yean, Mr. Girardot as a layman began to feel unqualified to guide a student body largely preparing for the priesthood and ~o informed Bishop Walsh in London. The bishop asked him to recommend some religious congregation to replace him. Mr. Girardot suggested the Basilians because they were -,t the time one of the few bi-lingual religious communities in Canada. There was a French tradition in the community that had come u to Canada from France less than a generation earlier; and, having become located in Toronto at St. Michael's College, there were persisting British and Irish influences. When Father O'Connor arrived in Sandwich, Mr. Girardot valiantly assi:sted him, even canvassing hom3s in the district for students. Freed from his duties at the college, Mr. Girardot wes u appointed public school inspector for North Essex, which post he held until his death in Sandwich in 1900. In the next twenty years, 1870-1890, Father Dennis O'Connor proved himself a worthy successor of Father Point and Mr. Girardot. In the very first year of his administration a college course was introduced; and although the growth u of the school was unspectacular, it was steady. From a total enrollment of 29 students in 1870, the College grew until its attendance reached 150 at the turn of the century. By 1890 when Father O'Connor left Assumption College to become Bishop of London and, later, Archbishop of u Toronto, the College had expanded to three times its original dimensions. To the old classroom building, the original unit opened in 1857 and still in use, were added the southern wing of the present Administration Building in 1875 and u the central wing including the refectory and infirmary in 1884. u u L L

u Early Progress [.J Father O'Connor's assistants during his early years at the College were Fathers M. J . Ferguson, M. Mungovan, D. Cushing (president of the College, 1890-1901) and Robert MeBrady (president, 1901 -1907), names that are rich with legend in the story of Assumption. With the administration of Father Francis Forster ( 1907-19 19), and Father Joseph Muckle ( 1919- 1922), a new generation of Basilians took over and the pioneering age may be said to have passed. During these years the northern wing of the Administration Building in which the chapel is located, the gymnasium and the adjoining residence building u were erected. Undoubtedly, the most important event of this period was the agreement of affiliation of the college department with the University of Western Ontario, initiated by Father Fallon of the Diocese of London and completed in detail and u signed in October, 1919. A summary of the terms of affiliation embraced in point 12 of the original document follows: "The Assumption College shall constitute a College of Arts and as such sha11 enter into and form a part of the Faculty of Arts of the Western University; it shall enjoy the rights and assume the obligations common to u all the affiliated colleges; it shall be represented in the Board of governors and the Senate and in the Council of the Faculty of Arts; its staff of teachers shall have equal standing and rights with the officers of instruction of the University College of Arts; its students shall be admitted to the degrees of the Western University and w to the medals, scholarships and prizes offered by the University in the Arts courses; all in accordance with the Western University Act of 1908, chapter 145 in the Statutes of Ontario." u There were 4 7 students in the college department at the time affiliation was effected; in 1930 there were 116; in 1936, 345; in 1944, 305. As of 1947, the total enrollment including College, High School, Night School and Summer School reached 1570. u Succeeding Father Muckle, Father Daniel Dillon served as president from 1922 to 1928 and again from 1931 unt il his illness in the summer of 1932. The present classroom Building was erected during his first administration. Father Vincent L. Kennedy was president from 1928 to 1931 and Father Thomas A. MacDonald, from 1932 to 1940. Father u Vincent J. Guinan, a graduate of the first class following affiliation of the College with the University, took office in 1940, the ninth Basilian president of Assumption College. u Father John H. O 'Loane succeeded Father Guinan in 1946 and is now guiding the destinies of the college and its u proposed expansion. u GRADE THIRTEEN Front Row-P. Ferrin, F. Marentette, L. Frederick, W. THE ST. FRANCIS XAVIER MISSION SOCIETY

Though this year has not been a record-breaker as far as the Mission Society is concerned, there was a great Mission interest shown on the part of a great many of the students. Our total collections for the year were dose to the $1 ,500 mark, and our largest contribution was again the usual $ I ,OOO to the Basilian Fathers' Mexican Missions. L

The Student Executive of the Society did a real job of assisting 11 new Faculty Director in his attempt to fill the great v4cancy left in our ranks by the departure of Mr. J. Enright to another Basilian school. Frank Shenk, John Rooney, L and Dave Dingeman are especially to be commended for their efforts. In February of this year, the Mission Society conducted a large-scale raffl~. offering a beautiful table-model radio L as first priie. The proceeds from this raffle gave several classes a large boost in the standings and upped the school total considerably. At the c1ose of the raffle, just before tl,e lucky tickets were drawn, the Society, on behalf of the students. presented to Father "Benny" Jacques a cheque for $100. Fr. Jacques, a former great of Assumption's footb411 4nd L baseball teams, was just returning to his Mission fields in after 11 well-earned rest. He spoke briefly to the students, telling them that their prayers were just as effective, if not more so, in furthering Mission activities.

As usual, interest reached a new high during the annual "A" man contest. Large posters were hung in the rotunda of the school building, 4nd campaign banners waved from every vantage point. Mr. Paulus again was the head judge in the poster contest, and a $5 priie was awarded for the most original and artistic work.

Next year's Executive was appointed and the names of the officers were revealed at the assembly closing the "A" man contest. John Rooney, Andrew Beck, Dave Dingeman, M. Laforet, and D. Zakoor promise to lead the 1948-49 Mission Society to new limits. u u u L.: [j [j [j

u [J :.J, w• Variety Show

There were but two dramatic presentations this school year, "You Can't Take It With You" and "The Variety Show." As much has been said of the former in the "Reporter" perhaps 11 ~ummary of the latter will suffice for the "Purple Raider." The opening choruses of this year's Variety Show proved what can be done when Band and Glee Club are united. Piano solos by Gerald Comeau, John Dolan, Jerry Teahan and Tom Schock, each with its own flavor, left a good taste ,n the mouth The song soloists Dick Maher, Richard Renaud, Bob Squire, Bud Morrell, Raymond Soulliere, Tom Meier, Al Sarkozy, Bryan Smyth with Ray Vincent and Wilf Kenny dueting and the First Nighters (J. Meade, F. Smith, R. Maher, T. Meier) quartetting, received well deserved applause. The dancers, Tom Barrett heading the list, supported by R. Renaud, J. Dolan, R. Briggs, R. Harrison, T. Ray, E. Harb, R. Tonkin, and F. Montello added that certain quality of rhythm that head, legs, torso and feet can combine in producing.

Lucien Duyek charmed his listeners with several accordian numbers. The Christopher Columbus escapade (Carl Renda and Jack Petz), The Haunted House (Bill MacDonald, C. Law rence, Wm. Vahey, M. Mogge) and the dialogue of R Renaud and R. Squire, were skits as original as they were entertaining. u Those two red-turbined and white-clad magicians (Tom Meagher and Jim Broughton) have the audience still guessing.

The imitations of Bob Morand, Bill Insley, and Steve Zam were convincingly real and had even a professional touch. "The Road to Ballygarth" with J. Magin, R. Ouellette, F. Furlong, D. Wilkinson, R. Graveline, A Sheridan and F. Zakoor was the most pretentious and subtle of the skits. The good performance of these boys really took us back to the Ireland of 1789. The Senior and Junior Glee Clubs whose names are too numerous to mention gave unstintingly of their ability to their leaders, Mr. Menichetti and Mr. Donoher, C.S.B. The Strange Encounter between D. Wilkinson and R. Tews was very strange indeed. Louie's Hungry Five most ably conducted by Charlie Lawrence were humorous to be sure and their music so delightful and rhythmic that it set many a foot a-tapping. A great little act! Jerry Gilboe as M.C. with his woolen-white coat, navy blue trousers, multi-colored neektie and red carnation did an impressive job. Paul Klebba and Ronald Klamt with tuxedos and white carnations in their lapels were as popular and indispensable as they were on the football field.

Finally many thanks are here rendered to Min V. W, Leach, Jack Bickle, Mrs. Claude Arnold, Al Watson, and his associate make-up artists, to Mary Ann Varga, George Louckes and Joe Flood, Mrs. Oolihan, Barbara Birch, Mr. Pazik, C.S.B., as well as t o all the boys who gave freely of their time and talent to make this production possible.

RARE HONOR COMES TO ASSUMPTION OLD BOY FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE

Michigan Medical Society honors Dr Thomas Edward DeGurse as "Michigan's foremost family physician." This is the fir5t time the society ha, conferred such an honor. Although "Just a country doctor," Dr. DeGurse has a life story that reads like a combination of Horatio Alger and Paul Muni, except that some of tho chapters would be too fantastic for a movie. Nobody would believe it. Dr. DeGurse was born in Canada of a large family of ten children. He was only nine when his mother died and went to live with his sister, paying his way by doing chores. At 14 he was a hired man and lumber-jack: at 16, a surveyor\ lielper ho saved enough to get through Auumption Collego and College of Medicine. At 23 he opened his offic in Marine City and bogan a story, book career. Today at 7'4 he is still a family doctor covering an area of 300 square miles. BATILE RIVER ICE-He is just a doctor ...il family doctor but forever forward looking. He helped when Dr. Angu\ Mclain removed the first appendix in St. Clair County: alone he performed one of tho firi,I operations in Lambton County, Ontario, on a kitchen table. Canadians in early years simply didn't have any doctors across the river opposite Marine City: so Dr. DeGurse took care of the people there, even though it meant struggling through the ice flows. With no license to write prescriptions in Canada, he always took what drugs he could in his satchel and podets. In case of need he brought a relative of the patient back across the river and wrote out a prescription. Even the United States Public Health Service drafted Dr. DeGurso as an assistant surgeon lo teach ship sanitation to Great Lakes Mariners. With his house backing up to the river, the Doctor still on occasions grabs his megaphone and bellows a conversation with the skipper of a passing ship. Nobody knows how much he has given away n clothes and blankeh to the needy patients or how much h has persuaded merchants to g,ve. In 50 yea, s Dr. DeGurse hu acquired many honors, including, from the people of Marine City, a silver loving cup as tall as him Alf. But this time honor comes from the profession of Michigan. Dr. DeGur·.e, CONGRATULATIONS in the name of the executive and thousands of members of the Auxiliaryl Frank McIntyre Grad of '96

The writer has read with avid interest of the excellent work of the different Chapters of our beloved Alma Mater's Alumni Association, and he feels that he is indeed fortunate having been permitted for several years past to be a member of a which has as its sole aim the continued success of Assumption College, Windsor, Ontario. We seem to be living in a "Cycle of Crusades" not forgetting the Crusade nearest and dearest to our hearts, "The Crusade of the Holy Rosary of Our Blessed Mother." While traveling about with a little group, soliciting new students, we do not forget the old timers, that is, who are now enjoying the creature comforts of life, and one of them may I say aptly named our little coterie "The Assumption College Crusaders." It is joyous music to our ears, to hear these old timers, all solid members of the Alumni, give credit for their success in life, to the training they received, while students at Assumption College under the watchful friendly eye of one of the greatest teaching communities of men in the world today, vii: The Good Basi!ian Fathers. It gives me great pleasure at this time to list the Chapters, the name of each Chapter's President, and the cities respectively, in which chapters have been inaugurated. In each of these places we found loyal sons of Assumption now in action, giving their all, proud of the privilege and honor of serving, as well as calling their outstanding educational institution, of International fame-their beloved Alma Mater. Anthony Rocco, Cleveland Chapter W. H. Fox, London Samuel Broughton, Wyandotte Michael Doyle, Toronto H. J. Ladouceur, Detroit Phil Gignac, LaSalle-Amherstburg Hugh Bondy, Windsor Jack McKenty, Chatham The Windsor Chapter (of which I am proud to be a member) was the first to come into being and is called The Mother Chapter. The LaSalle-Amerstburg and the Chatham Chapters though the newest groups of all, are never the less riding high in spirit and enthusiasm. How about your Chapter? How many young or old Assumptionites do you find in your area? Round them up, get into action and organize. Write Rev. E. L. Pokriefka, C.S.B., c o Assul"1ption College Auxiliary, 712-714 Majestic Building, Detroit 26, Michigan. He will supply you with instructions and a complete format for organization. Space will not permit the names of all the loyal sons of Assumption who are working untiringly for this most worthy cause, but I cannot refrain from tossing a few posies to such fellows as Ray Marcotte, Rene Chauvin (Past President), and Hugh Bondy, current President of the Windsorites; Andy McGuire (always active); Pat Jeakle of Detroit (never tiring); Phil Gignac, the dynamic person111ity who never fails to stir up his (Down River Radishers) to successful action; not forgetting Henry Hoberg, "The Minute Man," who lives under the eaves of Assumption, and is always ready to grab his firem<1n's helmet and make a run for action whenever he gets the "NOD." Join the colors. Assumptionites. How about your Chapter? The time is now. ...
