The analysis of its gut content revealed the presence of 62 genera of planktonic life forms along with other animal matters. The organization of the alimentary tract and maximum Relative Mean Length of Gut (0.511±0.029 mm) indicated its carnivorous food habit. The peak gastro-somatic index (GSI) in winter-spring seasons and summer-rainy seasons indicated alteration of its feeding intensity. Furthermore, higher diet breadth on resource use (Levins’ and Hurlbert’s) with zooplankton compared to phytoplankton and Keywords: total plankton confirmed its zooplanktivore habit. Department of Zoology, Government College University, Lahore Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Pakistan has introduced several alien exotic fish species e.g. grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), bighead carp, (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), silver carp, (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), gold fish (Carassius auratus), and three species of tilapia (Oreochromis aureus, Oreochromis mossambicus, Oreochromis niloticus) in warm waters along with two trout species: the rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) and the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) in colder regions for specific purposes like sport fishing, yield enhancement and biological control of aquatic weeds and mosquitoes. The exotic species are becoming invasive in the freshwater biomes of the Punjab and other provinces of Pakistan by reason of their potent reproductive potential and feeding competitions with the native freshwater fish fauna. Resultantly the native fish species viz; Channa marulius, Wallago attu, Rita rita, Sperata sarwari, Gibelion catla, Cirrhinus mrigala and Labeo rohita, which are of economic value are under threat. The length-weight relationship was computed independently for males and females of Macrognathus aculeatus. The analysis of covariance revealed no significant difference (p = 0'05) between the length-weight relationship of males and females. Hence. a common logarithmic equation (log W = - 5·6934+ 3'1234 log L) was fitted for the species. The regression coefficient oflogarithm of weight on logarithm oflength was found to depart significantly Ip = 0'05) from the cubic value. Keywords. Introduction The mathematical relationship between length and weight of fishes and its vital importance in fishery is well known to fishery biologists. The study of length-weight relationship provides information to measure variation from the expected weight or length ofindividual fish or group offish as indicative offatness, general well-being or gonad development (Le Cren 1951). This is of primary importance in computing the yield equations (Ricker 1958), in estimating the number of fish landed and in comparing populations in time and space (Chanchal et al 1978). Of the two measurements, i.e., length and weight, the former is more easily measurable and can be converted into weight, in which the catch is invariably expressed (Bal and Rao 1984). -

The present study was undertaken in order to untangle some of the problems of classification which have beset this group. The genera have not been studied in toto since the days of Bleeker and Gunther. In this study I have made an attempt to clarify the relationships of the various genera, which in some cases has involved revision of generic limits. Lack of time and material has precluded a thorough analysis of the species within any genus; for the same reason no skeletal examinations were possible. It is hoped, however, that a clarification of generic limits through study of external characters will make it easier in the future for interested workers, with sufficient material at hand, to do further and much-needed work on both the genera and the species. Captive Breeding of Peacock Eel, Macrognathus aculeatus S.K.Das and N. Kalita Assam Agricultural University, College of Fisheries, Raha, Nagaon,Assam,India 782 103 World trade of ornamental fishes has reached more than one billion dollars and is growing rapidly at around 10% per year. India currently exports only around Rs. 30 million (US$650,000 million) of ornamental fish. However, the northeast of India has many species of fish that have great potential in the ornamental trade and many of which are attractive to foreign markets. There is great potential to expand the local industry. In Assam there are several native species suitable for the ornamental fish trade. These include Botia dario, Channa stewartii, Channa barca, Gagata cenia, Hara hara, Garra species, Mystus sp. Somileptes gongata, Nemacheilus botia, Macrognathus aculeatus, Mastacembelus pancalus, Rasbora species, Danio species and many others. In Assam there is no organized trade at present. Only a very few people are supplying these fishes to the exporters in places such as Kolkata and Chennai. In the present study, the structure and morphometrics of alimentary canal of Rasborine fishes (11 species belonging to 8 genera) are described in relation to their food and feeding habits. The general pattern of alimentary canal was found to be similar but according to their feeding habit some morphological features was showing dissimilarity. The pattern and length of alimentary canal indicated inter and intraspecific variations. The stomach content analysis revealed that Amblypharyngodon mola , Aspidoparia morar, Barilius bendelisis, Esomus danricus mainly depended on vegetable matter whereas Barilius barila Hamilton, Barilius barna Hamilton, Barilius vagra Hamilton, Branchydanio rerio , Danio devario Hamilton, Raiamas bola, Rasbora (Rasbora ) daniconius daniconius depended on animal matter. It has been observed that the rasborine fishes are predominantly larvivorous i.e. feeding on insect larvae except for Raiamas which is a carnivore. Abstract Mastacembelus armatus which is popularly known as tire-track spiny eel or zig-zag eel is a common fish species of Indian sub-continent. It is a popular table fish due to delicious taste and high nutritional value. In Bangladesh, its demand is even higher than that of the carps. It also has good popularity as an aquarium fish and recently has been reported to be exported as indigenous ornamental fish from India to other countries. Information so far available on its food, feeding habit and reproductive biology is in a scattered manner and till date no such consolidated report on these aspects is available. -

Abdus Salam Bhuiyan2 1Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi 6205, Bangladesh. 2Department of Zoology, Faculty of Life and Earth, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi 6205, Bangladesh. *E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Food and feeding habits of Rita rita collected from the Padda river in the north-western region of Bangladesh were investigated by examining the gastro-intestine contents of 744 specimens collected from May, 2010 to April, 2011. Their diet consisted of a broad spectrum of food types but crustaceans were dominant, with copepodes constituting 20.73%, other non-copepode crustaceans constituted 12.01%. The next major food group was insect (15.97%), followed by mollusks (14.76%), teleosts (12.98%) and fish eggs (8.608%). Food items like Teleosts, mollusks, insects and shrimps tended to occur in the stomachs in higher frequencies with an increase in R. rita size (up to 30.5 - 40.5cm), while fish eggs, copepods and non-copepode crustaceans tended to increase in stomachs at sizes between 10.5-20.5cm. Analysis of monthly variations in stomach fullness indicated that feeding intensity fluctuated throughout the year with a low during June and August corresponding to the spawning period.
