TEN LITHUANIA A STRUGGLE FOR JUSTICE AND TRUTH IN THE LAND OF MY FOREFATHERS N JUNE 19, 1991, I landed at Riga International Airport on my way Oto Vilnius, the capital of newly independent Lithuania. I was full of curiosity and anticipation regarding the upcoming week that I was going to spend in the ancestral home of my forefathers. Along with a group of members of the Knesset (the Israeli parliament) and representatives of world Jewish organizations, I had been invited to attend the dedication of an impressive new monument at Ponar (Paneriai in Lithuanian), the site of the mass murder of the Jews of Vilnius. Approximately 70,000 Jews had been murdered there during the years 1941–1944, making it one of the largest sites of Jewish murder during the Holocaust, outside the death camps. As an extremely proud Litvak (Jew of Lithuanian origin), I was natu- rally very pleased to have the opportunity to come to Lithuania so soon after the fall of Communism, but there was also a personal element to my anticipation. My namesake, my great- uncle Efraim Zar, and his fam- ily had been murdered in Vilnius, and I hoped, during the trip, to learn the details of their fate, about which we knew almost nothing. There were several articles on my grandfather’s family in a memorial volume, 99780230617308ts11.indd780230617308ts11.indd 9955 99/21/2009/21/2009 11:55:2511:55:25 AMAM 96 OPERATION LAST CHANCE published in the sixties, dedicated to their shtetl, Ligmiyan, among other towns, which mentioned that his brother Efraim had been murdered at Ponar, but we had no details or corroboration of this information, which was apparently based on hearsay. -

15 Historical Revisionism by the Families of Rav Kook’s Disciples: Three Case Studies By: EITAM HENKIN* Introduction Three famous rabbis with personal connections to Rabbi AY HaCohen Kook, to his inner circle, and to his yeshiva, are discussed in this article. While these rabbis never denied their connections to Rav Kook, their de- scendants—for various ideological and educational purposes—strove to rewrite their ancestors’ histories by eliminating references to Rav Kook or to his yeshiva, Mercaz HaRav. Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) NIT ZAVIM – ROSH HASHANA Divine Judgment An elderly man once walked into Rav Levi Yitzchok’s Bais Din while it was in session. “I want to lodge a complaint,” he said, “and I want the Bais Din to rule on it. I live some distance away, and I have come here just to make my case before this Bais Din . Will you consider my case?” “Of course,” said Rav Levi Yitzchok. “Who is the defendant?” “It is Hashem .” “I see,” said Rav Levi Yitzchok. “And what is your complaint?” “I am a very poor man,” he said. “My wife and I have only one child, a daughter, and we have scrimped and saved for years so that we could marry her off properly. We have gone hungry just so we could save a few more pennies. And now she i s of marriageable age, and we are not even close to the amount of money we need. It is my opinion that Hashem is obligated to marry her off!” The Bais Din deliberated for a while and arrived at a decision. Rav Levi Yitzchok announced the verdict. “You are right,” he said. “We rule in your favor. Hashem is obligated to marry off your daughter. This Bais Din is giving Him a grace period of forty days to provide the money.” Forty days later, the man returned to the Bais Din . -

In this volume, the Chofetz Chaim systematically and vigorously refuted all the various justifications being advanced to defend removing the beard, and asserted (in his introductory remarks) that “it is a great mitzvah for the entire Jewish people to reinforce this observance, and to refrain from trimming the beard even with scissors.” [In contradistinction to the common presumption that the accepted Lit- vish practice is to be beardless, the Chofetz Chaim attests in the first chapter of this work that until that time, only “one in a thousand” shaved their beards.] Recently, much discussion has appeared in various widely-publicized forums on the topic of maintaining a beard. Is maintaining a beard a halachic imperative or a Kabbalistic/Chassidic stringency? Many indi- viduals have expressed varied and often conflicting opinions and assumptions regarding this issue (especially regarding the position of Litvish and other Gedolim).
