• In 1873, the original Ebers Papyrus was cut up into many small sections to simplify its conservation. It has been kept under glass ever since. The original scale and beauty of the Ebers Papyrus are recreated for the first time by the full-size replica produced in 2020. • The Ebers Papyrus is the longest scroll devoted to ancient Egyptian medicine, and the only one to have been completely preserved. It is 18.63 metres long and comprises 108 columns of text written in black and red ink. Its origin at the end of the 16th century BC is indicated by the calendar on the reverse and was confirmed by radiocarbon dating in 2015. • The hieratic script reads from right to left. The quantities in the prescriptions are mainly shown in red ink. The entire scroll was probably written by a single scribe. With a few considerable exceptions, the columns are generally about A4 in size. The fact that the scroll was written on the reverse at the end proves that it is complete. • Professor Reinhold Scholl is a scholar of Ancient History who for many years was the curator of Leipzig University Library’s Papyrus and Ostraca Collection. He curated exhibitions on the Ebers Papyrus and the Leipzig papyri in 2002 and 2010. • The Ebers Papyrus is one of our key sources of knowledge about ancient medicine. It contains nearly 900 prescriptions and educational texts concentrating on general and internal medicine. It lists about 80 medical conditions, including heart disease, gynaecological matters, intestinal prob- lems, parasites and eye diseases, as well as related remedies such as suppositories, ointments, pills, bandages and enemas. Most of the remedies comprise multiple ingredients: minerals, plant and animal products, and also human and animal excreta. Werde an den ‚Rücken‘ der Augen gegeben.“ (Eb 360) • “Another (remedy) to eliminate white (spots) in the eyes: ‘There is thunder in the southern sky in the evening and a storm in the northern sky. A pillar (possibly one of the Four Pillars of Heaven?) has fallen into the water. The crew of Ra(’s solar barque) are driving in their mooring posts while heads have fallen into the water. Who will fetch them, who will find them (unscathed)? I’m the one who will fetch them; I’m the one who will find them (unscathed). I have fetched your heads, I have attached (them to) your necks. I have fastened your cut-o heads in their place. I have fetched you in order to dispel the influ- ence of a god, of a male (un)dead, of a female (un)dead, etc.’ To be intoned over the gall bladder of a tortoise, pulverized with honey, which should then be applied to the eyelids.” Dieser Spruch ist wirklich vortre°lich, Millionen Mal erprobt!“ (Eb 1) • “These words should be intoned when applying a remedy to any of a man’s diseased limbs. This incantation is superb; it’s been tested a million times!” (Eb 1) „Ein anderes Heilmittel gegen Menschenbisse: Weihrauch: 1, Ocker: 1, Galle der Zie- ge: 1. Werde zu einer Masse gemacht. Die verletzte Stelle werde darüber verbunden.“ (Eb 433) • “Another remedy for human bites: Mix frankincense, ochre, and gall of goat in equal amounts. Smear the mixture on a bandage and bind the wound.” Damit wird dann der Kopf eingesalbt.“ (Eb 470) • “An ointment to treat hair eectively: Grind a donkey’s tooth and add it to honey. Rub the ointment on the head.” So wirkt gegen Schnupfen „Polei-Minze. Werde mit Datteln zerrieben. Werde an die Nase gegeben.“ (EB 762) • The ingredients needed for some prescriptions from the Ebers Papyrus can be found in any health food shop. For example, to treat a cold, it recommends rubbing dates with pennyroyal (a species in the mint family) and applying the mixture to the nose. • Dr Lutz Popko works at the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig and has translated the Papyrus Ebers from hieratic into German. His version is used by Leipzig University Library and can also be read on www.papyrusebers.de. Die Publication des Documents kann schnell vor sich gehen; die Eruierung der Bedeutung jeden einzelnen Wortes wird Jahre in Anspruch nehmen.“ • End of the letter written in Cairo on 26 March 1873 by Georg Ebers (when he was still an associate professor) to Karl von Gerber, the Saxon Minister of State, announcing the delivery of the medical scroll. Ebers wrote: “As soon as I return home, I am plan- ning to publish the papyrus – a di¤cult but gratifying task. The document can be published quickly; establishing the meaning of each word will take years.” • In 1873, Georg Ebers took his papyrus scroll from Luxor to Leipzig with the aim of publishing it in order to share the whole text with the world. Einleitung und Text, Tafel I–LXIX; Bd. 2. Glossar und Text, Tafel LXX–CX, Leipzig, 1875. • In 1875, Ebers published a printed facsimile of the Ebers Papyrus, thus permanently safeguarding the text, under the title: Ebers Papyrus: Hermetic book about the medicines of the ancient Egyptians in hieratic script. Edited with a table of contents and an introduction by Georg Ebers. With a hieroglyphic–Latin glossary by Ludwig Stern; 2 volumes. Vol. 1: Introduction and text, plates I–LXIX; Vol. 2: Glossary and text, plates LXX–CX, Leipzig, 1875.

  • Ephemeral Classics? the Influence and Fate of the ‘Pro- Fessorial Novel’
EPHEMERAL CLASSICS? THE INFLUENCE AND FATE OF THE ‘PRO- FESSORIAL NOVEL’ Andrew Turner An exotic subject crops up, sets the cultured afire for a year or two; after five years the whole hubbub is forgotten; after ten years it is only the diligent literary scholars who will remember that there was ever a famous historical novelist called Felix Dahn. Georgy Lukács1 The attitudes of academics and teachers to the depiction of the ancient world in popular culture, particularly in historical films and novels, vary considerably, but are frequently unfa- vourable. A successful work set in the ancient world often provokes stinging criticism be- cause of historical inaccuracies, or is only barely tolerated on the cynical grounds that the in- terest it sparks in the ancient world may in the future produce increased enrolments. When academics themselves become involved in the production of these works, criticism can be- come personal, and range from accusations of venality on the one hand to intellectual snob- bery and jealousy on the other. Objective criticism of artistic merit in these works can be dif- ficult to find. These problems are nothing new, and may be traced back to the emergence of the historical novel in Western Europe as a commercially successful form in the early 19th century. One of the most interesting manifestations of this genre, although largely forgotten today, was the so- called ‘Professorenroman’, or ‘Professorial novel’, a form which appeared in the Germany of the late 1800’s. Its two leading exponents were academics at German universities, Felix Dahn, a professor of law, and Georg Ebers, an Egyptologist.

  • The Papyrus Ebers and the Medicine of the West
The Papyrus Ebers and the Medicine of the West Gundolf Keil English translation by Microsoft and edited by Klaus Ammann until page 22. Γλανχας Αδηνξε ψερειν - No, it’s certainly not about owls of course, and if the veterinary papyrus from Kâhûn deals also with sick birds (as well as with sick fish, the Nile-Cichlids), even then the diseased poultry of the veterinary Papyrus certainly are not owls, but elderly geese. "Owls to Athens" rather means to deal with the Papyrus Ebers. Actually, who does not know it, the calligraphic work of art; who would not see its aesthetic beauty before his eyes; who does not know of the thousands of images circulating about it, who was not among the students of thousands of classes that have rolled past it, stretched behind glass panels –admiring it’s exhilarating color -: actually the pages of the "final part" that showed writings on both sides and claimed more than two meters. It was 18 meters and 63 centimeters long when Georg Ebers in 1873 was able to acquire it. The space written extended to 20,23 m; thanks to FELIX VON OEFELE, who ordered the exact mensuration in 1906. 1941 the Papyrus Ebers is among the precious objects to be rescued from air attacks of the allies – first placed into the vault of a branch of the German Bank, then transferred in 1943 to the castle of the town of Rochlitz, in 1945 occupied by Russian police forces. When the University Library got access to their "most valuable stocks" in 1946, the Papyrus was found "no more in the house, but "outdoors " in a dog’s kennel under manure and dirt".

  • By Georg Ebers Contents PREFACE
UARDA By Georg Ebers Translated from the German by Clara Bell DEDICATION. Thou knowest well from what this book arose. When suffering seized and held me in its clasp Thy fostering hand released me from its grasp, And from amid the thorns there bloomed a rose. Air, dew, and sunshine were bestowed by Thee, And Thine it is; without these lines from me. Contents PREFACE. In the winter of 1873 I spent some weeks in one of the tombs of the Necropolis of Thebes in order to study the monuments of that solemn city of the dead; and during my long rides in the silent desert the germ was developed whence this book has since grown. The leisure of mind and body required to write it was given me through a long but not disabling illness. In the first instance I intended to elucidate this story—like my "Egyptian Princess"—with numerous and extensive notes placed at the end; but I was led to give up this plan from finding that it would lead me to the repetition of much that I had written in the notes to that earlier work. The numerous notes to the former novel had a threefold purpose. In the first place they served to explain the text; in the second they were a guarantee of the care with which I had striven to depict the archaeological details in all their individuality from the records of the monuments and of Classic Authors; and thirdly I hoped to supply the reader who desired further knowledge of the period with some guide to his studies.
