The truth is that I had been thinking about this project for a long time, especially because I was lucky –or because I stick my nose where it does not belong– to experience many of the passages of the great changes in optometry in Mexico during the last 56 years. The time has come to share those memories, because I consider them historical and can help so that this profession continues growing and obtains the recognition it deserves. What I write in this book are authentic stories and they occurred just as I describe them. Optometry is a very old profession, as ancient as the use of eyeglasses, since 1623, or perhaps before, because there were optometrists or eyeglass masters, as they were called at that time. Since then and up to now, technology has made us have equipment that gives us information that we never dreamed of before; the development of new materials for contact lenses, progressive lenses and new drugs that allow us to give solution to the multiple problems that patients suffer. Today, the profession has changed very much. Before, we only prescribed eyeglasses and contact lenses. Now, we see to the primary and general visual healthcare of the population. Patients come to the offices with problems of visual health derived from cataracts or glaucoma, or diabetes, brain tumors and many other diseases, and we are in charge of diagnosing them and channeling them for the 5 adequate treatment. Sometimes, the diagnosis can be very hard for the patients as well as for the optometrists; however, there are also great satisfactions, like observing the face of a boy when we give him his first eyeglasses and he can see clearly, or when we know that a patient with low vision to whom we have given a special aid can read or see the photographs of his grandchildren. Over more than 50 years as an optometrist, for me it is a reason to be proud and satisfied to see how this profession has changed and how it has gradually gained the recognition it deserves. Today, the education that the university students receive in Mexico is the best of Latin America. In addition, practicing it has allowed me to share extraordinary moments with colleagues, and some very disappointing ones too. However, we have remained in the front line to achieve a better visual health for the inhabitants of Mexico. As you can see, I am in love with this profession. I hope that this book helps you who are beginning to study optometry or for those who have practiced it for 50 years to appreciate it. 6 HOW IT ALL BEGAN Frequently, when I give a lecture or talks to groups of students, they ask me why I studied optometry. In reality, there were many events that led me to the decision, and they began since childhood. When I was three years old, my parents noticed that my left eye deviated to the left and they took me to one of the best ophthalmologists of that time, Dr. Anselmo Fonte, who diagnosed Myopia –I think I had almost five or six diopters– amblyopia and strabismus of the left eye. He told my parents that I did not need surgery and not to let anyone operate me. At the Optica Panamericana on Madero Street, they adapted my first eyeglasses. All the optical shops were then on that street; the most renowned ones were Optica Economica, Optica Mazal, Optica Madero, Optica Lux and Optica Panamericana. My prescription changed as I grew up. In those years, the fifties –I was a teenager– I met an optometrist graduated from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN, by its abbreviation in Spanish) working at the Panamericana. As much as I try, I cannot remember his name, but when I visited him, we talked about his profession, his activities and where he had studied. Having used eyeglasses at such an early age affected my life in many ways. The kindergarten teachers did not let me play with my classmates because they were afraid that my eyeglasses might break –or I don’t know what they thought. Therefore, they had me sit with them during recess, which was not so bad, it had its advantages. I was one of the few children with eyeglasses at that time, if not the only one, which was surprising. In elementary and secondary school, perhaps due to my vision, I was very bad at sports (soccer, baseball.) When 7 teams were organized, they always picked me last and with an expression of “Too bad, Bromberg is on our team.” I was a shy and skinny boy with very thick glasses; however, I managed to make some good friends. In class, I was an average student, I did not excel. In the last year of secondary school, one had to choose the area of studies before enrolling in upper middle school: biological sciences, physics, mathematics, social sciences or arts and humanities. My uncle was a doctor; he suggested I study optometry, he thought it was a good profession, and I thought it was an excellent idea, something different; a profession I thought I knew well. Then, I went to ask for information at the IPN and was told that I had to enter the technical high school to be able to study my desired profession. My parents wanted me to study at the School. The IPN informed me what subjects I had to study: physics, chemistry and biology, which represented a problem, because biology was from one area and physics from another. These studies at that time were for a two-year period. The Institute approved that I study one area in the first cycle and the other in the following cycle. First, I studied physics, but, at the beginning of the second year, the Biology teacher whose name I forget, and would rather not remember, made a big scandal because she thought that if I had not studied the first course of biology, I should not study the second one. Since the school gave its authorization, the teacher failed me in all the exams. If it wasn’t for my mother who became her friend and asked her to give me private remedial classes in her house, I would have failed and would not have been able to enter the Polytechnic. 8 The Superior School of Medicine, IPN. The Superior School of Rural Medicine offered two professional degrees: medicine and optometry. It had that name “Rural Medicine” because they wanted the graduate physicians to work in the towns of Mexico, where their services were needed. Later on the name was change only Superios School of Medicine (ESM, by its abbreviation in Spanish). The degree in optometry began to be taught in 1950 after a series of events. In the forties, the Association of Opticians and Optometrists was established, and optometrists who graduated from universities of the United States and Germany joined, as well as Mexicans who had learned empirically and had been practicing for some time. They began to teach and give updating courses. However, aware of the fact that optometry was a university profession in other countries, the members approached the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, by its abbreviation in Spanish) to propose its creation, but were not successful. It was then that they approached the IPN, where it was approved as a technical course, for which only secondary studies were 9 required, and they did not grant a degree. It was not until 1960 that they began to require high school. After several legal battles from the graduate students, they achieved that a professional degree be granted. I was unaware of all this information when I approached the Superior School of Rural Medicine. I

La constante insistencia por la necesidad de revitalizar el Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México ha provocado, además de una evidente transformación de imagen urbana, otras mutaciones en el espacio urbano, cambios muy evidentes de carácter social, espacial y económico principalmente. Lo que aquí se presenta, es un análisis de éste tipo de intervención, realizada en la calle Francisco I. Madero, arteria vital del centro histórico, que cerró el tránsito vehicular en 2010 para priorizar el acceso exclusivamente peatonal al centro de la ciudad; los impactos generados a partir de éste suceso, principalmente en el ámbito comercial. Such an intervention has an important impact since it crucially modifies the use and perception of space. Constant insistence for the need to revitalize Mexico City's Historic Center has caused, in addition to a clear transformation of urban image, other important mutations in the urban space, mainly of social, spatial and economic nature.

The Church of San Francisco, as the oldest and first established by the mendicant Franciscans in Mexico, acts as a repository of the past, collecting and embodying centuries of memories of the city and the congregation it continues to represent. Many factors have contributed to the church's significance; the prestige of its site, the particular splendor of ceremonies and rituals held at both the Church and the chapel of San Jose de los Naturalés, and the liturgical processions which originated there. While the religious syncretism of some churches, especially open air chapels, has been analyzed, the effect of communal inscription on the architecture of Mexico City is an area of study that has not been adequately researched. This project presents a holistic approach to history through memory theory, one which incorporates cross-disciplinary perspectives including sociology and anthropology.

Chrisman, 2018 ii Abstract This dissertation is a cultural history about Sanborns, a Mexican business that began as a drugstore in 1903. It continues into the present as a national chain of restaurants and department stores owned by the Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. Each chapter explores different topics of analysis: modernity, consumerism, and upper-class leisure culture; revolutionary masculinity and racial politics; food, commodities, and Mexican nationalism; working-class labor struggles and company paternalism, and urban sexuality. The dissertation examines how everyday life created and was created by post-Revolutionary Mexico’s changing gender ideologies, evolving nationalist culture, and openness to foreign capital. It argues that the Sanborns chain has been an essential site of contestation and redefinition of gender roles across Mexico. Tracing the development of Sanborns contributes to the discussion of Mexico’s national culture during the twentieth-century. Commercial retailers and spaces of consumption helped shape Mexico’s urban landscape and consumer identities. The popularity of Sanborns was shaped by local consumer tastes and global technologies as they developed over time. My work describes the collaboration and conflict between Sanborns and its customers who used the floor space in their own way; the store began as a place of leisure for Mexico’s upper-class but evolved into a sexual space shared among classes.

Leal Martínez This dissertation examines the production and experience of class and racial distinctions in contemporary Mexico City by focusing on encounter and proximity between different social groups in the country’s most emblematic urban center. It draws on eighteenth months of ethnographic fieldwork with artists and young professionals living in the city’s historic center as part of a public-private redevelopment plan locally known as the “rescue.” Led by multimillionaire Carlos Slim, this endeavor has been framed as an initiative of civil society to recover the symbolic heart of the nation from crime and illegality while transforming it into a secure and livable space for all Mexicans. The rescue mobilizes a neoliberal idiom of the modern (associated in Mexico and across the world with democracy and responsible citizenship, a retreating state and a free market economy) and epitomizes the illegibility of public and private distinctions. I focus on moments of encounter between the historic center’s new affluent residents, on the one hand, and the inhabitants of its dilapidated tenements and the vendors of its informal street markets, on the other. Such encounters slide into suspicion, uncertainty, instability and misrecognition.

Linda Daniela Villegas Mercado March 2019 2 ABSTRACT In a Mexican political context permeated by drug-related violence, organised crime, and violence against women and feminised bodies, young women with different class and ethnic backgrounds are using hip-hop culture to denounce the government and create consciousness in relation to feminicide in the country. This thesis focuses on the work of the female rap collective Batallones Femeninos (Women’s Battalions) which originated in the frontier of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, and of Mare Advertencia Lirika, from the southern state of Oaxaca. Immersed in heavily male-dominated hip-hop culture, the female rappers in my research emerge as openly feminist artists and position their feminisms with reference to very particular geographical contexts, and class and ethnic backgrounds. In the case of Batallones, their feminism is informed by specific experiences in el barrio (the hood), of Juárez and Mexico City, the influence of autonomous Zapatismo, and their travels through the country.

    Mexico City & Copper Canyon Mexico City is the densely populated, high-altitude capital of Mexico. It's known for its Templo Mayor (a 13th-century Aztec temple), the baroque Catedral Metropolitana de México of the Spanish conquistadors and the Palacio Nacional, which houses historic murals by Diego Rivera. All of these are situated in and around the Plaza de la Constitución, the massive main square also known as the Zócalo. Copper Canyon, in northern Mexico, is a series of massive canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains. Popular for hiking, it gets its name from the copper-green hue of the canyon walls. The famous Chepe (Ferrocarril Barrancas del Cobre) train connects the region via over 80 tunnels and nearly 40 bridges. Divisadero, a photo stop on the line, offers views into Urique Canyon.
