The words and rhymes of hip hop identify what has arguably become the one cultural institution that urban youth rely on for honesty (keeping it real) and leadership. In 1996, there were 19 million young people aged 10-14 years old and 18.4 million aged 15-19 years old living in the US (1996 U.S. Census Bureau). According to a national Gallup poll of adolescents aged 13-17 (Bezilla 1993) since 1992, rap music has become the preferred music of youth (26%), followed closely by rock (25%). Though hip hop artists often rap about the range of adolescent confusion, desire and angst, at hip hop’s core is the commitment and vision of youth who are agitated, motivated and willing to confront complex and powerful institutions and practices to improve their 2 world.

    ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. My Morning Jacket My Morning Jacket are perhaps the biggest band from Louisville, Kentucky, in the past decade—and the only band we know of that can unite jam band fanatics, indie rock purists, and classic rock enthusiasts alike. While all of the band’s albums are stellar, we recommend checking out their breakthrough 2003 album It Still Moves, which features “One Big Holiday,” a song that can be considered the “Free Bird” for the iTunes generation. Williams ABSTRACT ‗Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop‘ begins with a crucial premise: the hip-hop world, as an imagined community, regards unconcealed intertextuality as integral to the production and reception of its artistic culture. In other words, borrowing, in its multidimensional forms and manifestations, is central to the aesthetics of hip-hop. This study of borrowing in hip-hop music, which transcends narrow discourses on ‗sampling‘ (digital sampling), illustrates the variety of ways that one can borrow from a source text or trope, and ways that audiences identify and respond to these practices. Another function of this thesis is to initiate a more nuanced discourse in hip-hop studies, to allow for the number of intertextual avenues travelled within hip-hop recordings, and to present academic frameworks with which to study them. The following five chapters provide case studies that prove that musical borrowing, part and parcel of hip-hop aesthetics, occurs on multiple planes and within myriad dimensions. Harshest Realm is now available via Coolatta Lounge CDs, along with fellow traveler Marshall Stacks’s latest jammers Lost in Sim City and the Snake Eyes/Point Blank single. ___________________________________________ Let’s start by giving the folks at home some background information. I’m particularly interested in learning how your relationship with music has developed over the years, so as to better understand where the music on the Harshest Realm album came from. No problem. I’m going to not hold back from rattling off influences and favorites, if that’s okay. Totally. The more the merrier. I was born at home on March 3rd, 1990 in Oak Park, down the street from Chicago’s west side, near Harlem between Harrison and Roosevelt. My earliest memory of music was seeing archival footage of The Beatles playing on the Ed Sullivan Show, which made playing guitar in a band and singing original songs seem like the most appealing activity in existence. I might have been two going on three, and I don’t remember much else from then besides puking in my crib and seeing carrots in it (the puke.) My older brother was discovering “classic rock,” so there were rock related bootleg VHS tapes in the house that would get played over and over.
