  • Midnight Special Songlist
west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

Ke$ha - Warrior - *** The HEADLINE needs to be creative and have By Rob Sheffield (Rolling Stone magazine, Dec. 4, 2012) your opinion. This doesn’t have one. Yours must. Ke$ha was born to be a rock star. She's a disco queen who dresses like Axl Rose and overdoses on personality like the New York Dolls. She rules pop radio with her megasleaze boombox beats, junk-shop rags and bleached-Sabbath hair. We all know glitter girls who dress like Ke$ha, talk like Ke$ha, party like INTRODUCTION - There are opinions Ke$ha and slap the world around like Ke$ha. But it's insanely here, but not about her album. Lots of rare to see one of these parking-lot queens roll with the big- background, with some writer’s ‘voice’ league pop stars. When she's on, Ke$ha can make everyone else on the charts seem like a church lady. (Lady K has stuck her dollar sign...), Over the past three years, Lady K has stuck her dollar sign on about Ke$ha’s colorful, musical past. a half-dozen or so of this century's most brilliant radio hits, all Great details here (megasleze boombox of them sounding more or less the same, and all of them endors- beats and junk shop rags) and clearly, ing the Ke$ha Philo$ophy of Life to the point where you bitterly the author did some great research. regret all the non-Ke$ha parts of your existence. From "Tik Tok" to "Blow" to "We R Who We R," she makes each of her hits into another installment of her cartoon glam-disco telenovela, an in- credibly broad and inclusive vision of pop trash.

“Assert Myself To Eliminate The Hurt”: Black Youth In Urban America Marcyliena Morgan Harvard University (Draft – Please Do Not Quote) Marcyliena Morgan [email protected] Graduate School of Education Human Development & Psychology 404 Larsen Hall 14 Appian Way Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138 Office:617-496-1809 (617)-264-9307 (FAX) 1 Marcyliena Morgan Harvard University “Assert Myself To Eliminate The Hurt”: Black Youth In Urban America Insert the power cord so my energy will work Pure energy spurts, sporadic, automatic mathematic, melodramatic -- acrobatic Diplomatic, charismatic Even my static, Asiatic Microphone fanatic 'Alone Blown in, in the whirlwind Eye of the storm, make the energy transform and convert, introvert turn extrovert Assert myself to eliminate the hurt If one takes more than a cursory glance at rap music, it is clear that the lyrics from some of hip hop’s most talented writers and performers are much more than the visceral cries of betrayed and discarded youth. The words and rhymes of hip hop identify what has arguably become the one cultural institution that urban youth rely on for honesty (keeping it real) and leadership. In 1996, there were 19 million young people aged 10-14 years old and 18.4 million aged 15-19 years old living in the US (1996 U.S. Census Bureau). According to a national Gallup poll of adolescents aged 13-17 (Bezilla 1993) since 1992, rap music has become the preferred music of youth (26%), followed closely by rock (25%). Though hip hop artists often rap about the range of adolescent confusion, desire and angst, at hip hop’s core is the commitment and vision of youth who are agitated, motivated and willing to confront complex and powerful institutions and practices to improve their 2 world.

  • The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 An historical biography: 1969-2004 by Omékongo Dibinga Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2015 Advisory Committee: Professor Barbara Finkelstein, Chair Professor Steve Klees Professor Robert Croninger Professor Derrick Alridge Professor Hoda Mahmoudi © Copyright by Omékongo Dibinga 2015 Acknowledgments I would first like to thank God for making life possible and bringing me to this point in my life.
