Gullies were then re- mapped after a ~40-year reforestation period (~1957–1997) and sediment production from gullies was calculated from these data bases using a degradation rate based on DEMs of gullies at differing stages of development in each of two different geologic/tectonic terrains. At the end of the measurement period the total composite gully area for the Waipaoa, Waiapu and Uawa catchments was 5%, 33% and 39% greater than before reforestation, and for the study period, gullies in both terrains collectively contributed the equivalent of 43%, 49% and 54% of the average annual suspended sediment yield from just 0.8%, 2.4% and 1.7% of hill country areas in these respective river systems. A potentially significant reduction in sediment production and yield at catchment-scale could be achieved through a more targeted approach to reforesta- tion, particularly of gullies in the most highly erodible and unstable pastoral hill country areas of Waiapu catchment. -

The two large lakes of Nicaragua, Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua, host a section of the Central American Volcanic Arc including several active volcanoes. One case of a tsunami in Lake Managua triggered by an explosive volcanic eruption is documented in the geologic record. However, a number of events occurred in the past at both lakes which were probably tsunamigenic. These include massive intrusion of pyroclastic flows from Apoyo volcano as well as of flank-collapse avalanches from Mombacho volcano into Lake Nicaragua. Maar-forming phreatomagmatic eruptions, which repeatedly occurred in Lake Managua, are highly explosive phenomena able to create hugh water waves as was observed elsewhere. The shallow water depth of the Nicaraguan lakes is discussed as the major limiting factor of tsunami amplitude and propagation speed. The very low-profile shores facilitate substantial in-land flooding even of relatively small waves. Implications for conceiving a possible warning system are also discussed. A supplementary finding-aid to the archives relating to Maori Schools held in the Auckland Regional Office of Archives New Zealand MAORI SCHOOL RECORDS, 1879-1969 Archives New Zealand Auckland holds records relating to approximately 449 Maori Schools, which were transferred by the Department of Education. These schools cover the whole of New Zealand. In 1969 the Maori Schools were integrated into the State System. Since then some of the former Maori schools have transferred their records to Archives New Zealand Auckland. Building and Site Files (series 1001) For most schools we hold a Building and Site file. These usually give information on: • the acquisition of land, specifications for the school or teacher’s residence, sometimes a plan. • letters and petitions to the Education Department requesting a school, providing lists of families’ names and ages of children in the local community who would attend a school. (Sometimes the school was never built, or it was some years before the Department agreed to the establishment of a school in the area). The files may also contain other information such as: • initial Inspector’s reports on the pupils and the teacher, and standard of buildings and grounds; • correspondence from the teachers, Education Department and members of the school committee or community; • pre-1920 lists of students’ names may be included. There are no Building and Site files for Church/private Maori schools as those organisations usually erected, paid for and maintained the buildings themselves. Admission Registers (series 1004) provide details such as: - Name of pupil - Date enrolled - Date of birth - Name of parent or guardian - Address - Previous school attended - Years/classes attended - Last date of attendance - Next school or destination Attendance Returns (series 1001 and 1006) provide: - Name of pupil - Age in years and months - Sometimes number of days attended at time of Return Log Books (series 1003) Written by the Head Teacher/Sole Teacher this daily diary includes important events and various activities held at the school. -

New Zcaland 2. TAUPO VOLCANIC ZONE The Taupo Volcanic Zone Fig. 1) is the consequence of plate subduction beneath the North Island of New Zcaland. ABSTRACT The thin continental crust (-15 km, Stem and Davey, 1987) spreads at rates up to 18 (Darby and Williams, 1991) Silicic calderas and geothermal systems in Taupo Volcanic in active rifting and subsidence. Since c. 1.6 Ma, the Zone (TVZ) of New Zealand are spatially related. Eight calderas, central TVZ has been the most frequently active and productive active since 1.6 Ma, occupy 45% of the Boundaries of region of rhyolitic volcanism on earth (Houghton et al., 1994). calderas arc often speculative, but of 20 geothermal systems producing an estimated 10 - 15 of rhyolite, and considercd, 15 occur on or next to a caldera margin where there is subordinate dacite, andesite and basalt. Debate continues whether enhanced deep permeability: the best examples are at Haroharo TVZ is a migrating andesitic arc and zone of asymmetric crustal where systems occur at the intersection of volcanic lineations and spreading (eg. Stem, or an andesite-dacite arc with bimodal caldera embayments, and at Rotorua. Drillhole evidence supports rhyolite-basalt back arc (eg. Cole, 1990). Whichever is the case, a realignment of caldera margin through the Wairakei- it is a matter of observation that most geothermal fields are geothermal field. Four geothermal systems have no known contained within the area of rhyolite volcanism. -

Whale Rider: The Re-enactment of Myth and the Empowerment of Women Abstract Whale Rider represents a particular type of mythic film that includes within it references to an ancient sacred story and is itself a contemporary recapitulation of it. The movie also belongs to a further subcategory of mythic cinema, using the double citation of the myth—in its original form and its re-enactment—to critique the subordinate position of women to men in the narrated world. To do this, the myth is extended beyond its traditional scope and context. After looking at how the movie embeds the story and recapitulates it, this paper examines the film’s reception. To consider the variety of positions taken by critics, it then analyses the traditional myth as well as how the book first worked with it. The onclusionc is, in distinction to the book, that the film drives a wedge between the myth’s original sacred function to provide meaning in the world for the Maori people and its extended intention to empower women, favoring the latter at the former’s expense. -

A Note for Teachers This series of National History Posters has been designed for individual and group Classroom use and Library display in secondary schools. The main aim is to promote in children an interest in their national history. By comparing their nation's history with what is presented on other Posters, students will appreciate the similarities and differences between their own history and that of their Pacific Island neighbours. The student activities are designed to stimulate comparison and further inquiry into aspects of their own and other's past. The National History Posters will serve a further purpose when used as a permanent display in a designated “History” classroom, public space or foyer in the school or for special Parent- Teacher nights, History Days and Education Days. The National History Posters do not offer a complete survey of each nation's history. They are only a profile. They are a short-cut to key people, key events and the broad sweep of history from original settlement to the present. There are many gaps. The posters therefore serve as a stimulus for students to add, delete, correct and argue about what should or should not be included in their Nation's History Profile.
