Shine a Light: Surveying Locality, Independence, and Digitization in Ottawa’S Independent Rock Scene
Shine a Light: Surveying Locality, Independence, and Digitization in Ottawa’s Independent Rock Scene by Michael Robert Audette-Longo A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Mediations Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2016 Michael Audette-Longo ii Abstract This dissertation examines the articulation and reconfiguration of locality in Ottawa's independent (indie) rock scene. It argues that styles of producing and relating to indie music that have been traditionally embedded in local scenic activity and practices of “do it yourself” (DIY) have been translated into more ubiquitous, quotidian, and valuable metadata and labour that organizes and powers the operations of disparate digital media sites, including digital music services like Bandcamp, CBC Radio 3, and Wyrd Distro. This argument is developed through closer analyses of the following case studies: the entrepreneurial strategies and musical focuses of Ottawa-based independent record labels Kelp and Bruised Tongue Records; scene-bound media like zines, blogs, music video and campus/community radio; the re-articulation of local regions as metadata that organize the search and retrieval functionalities of the digital music streaming services CBC Radio 3 and Bandcamp (a particular iteration of local regions I dub the “indexi-local”); and the concurrent incorporation of DIY labour and reconfiguration of the business of independent music evident in the digital music retailers Bandcamp and Wyrd Distro. This project contends that in the midst of digitization, the media sites, entrepreneurial strategies, and subcultural practices traditionally folded into the production of independence in local indie music scenes persist. -

“YOU KNOW YOU LOVE ME”: SURVEILLANCE AND SPECTATORSHIP IN CONTEMPORARY TEEN GIRL TV A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English By Cara Dickason, B.A. Washington, DC April 24, 2015 Copyright 2015 by Cara Dickason All Rights Reserved ii “YOU KNOW YOU LOVE ME”: SURVEILLANCE AND SPECTATORSHIP IN CONTEMPORARY TEEN GIRL TV Cara Dickason, B.A. Thesis Advisor: Caetlin Benson-Allott, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Contemporary teen girl television shows about surveillance allow for an exploration of how girls constantly negotiate between their own positions as spectators and their objectification through surveillance and in media representation. From celebrity photo leaks to magazine covers on sexting, public discourse on girls, surveillance, and technology is riddled with anxiety about privacy, visibility, and sexuality. Mainstream media obsess over the many dangers besetting girls today, their vulnerability to exploitation by surveillance, and their corresponding need for protection and policing. Simultaneously, however, that same media insists both on girls’ constant visual and sexual objectification and their position as empowered, independent consumer- spectators. This thesis traces such themes of surveillance and spectatorship through Gossip Girl (2007-2012), Pretty Little Liars (2010-present), and Veronica Mars (2004-2007), three popular prime time teen dramas that centralize girls’ relationship to surveillance and visibility. I will explore how surveillance functions to objectify, value, and control teenage girls, and how female viewers’ relationship to the shows complicates and recapitulates those functions. These teen girl TV shows ultimately allow for the consideration of the complex ways that surveillance both exerts control over and affords agency within girls’ relationships to their own visibility. -
“CLARA” Starring Patrick J. Adams and Troian Bellisario
Serendipity Point Films announces start of principal photography on “CLARA” Starring Patrick J. Adams and Troian Bellisario Akash Sherman Writes and Directs Ari Lantos Produces TORONTO, March 6, 2017 - Producer Ari Lantos (Remember, Barney’s Version) announces today that production is underway on the sci-fi drama, “CLARA”, a feature film written and directed by newcomer Akash Sherman. Patrick J. Adams (Suits) and Troian Bellisario (Pretty Little Liars) will star opposite each other, with Kristen Hager (Wanted) and Ennis Esmer (Miss Sloane) rounding out the principal cast. Principal photography will take place in Toronto. “CLARA” tells the story of Isaac Bruno (played by Adams), an astronomer obsessed with searching the cosmos for signs of life beyond Earth, despite the collapse of his own personal life around him. Isaac takes on an unqualified but spirited young research assistant named Clara (played by Bellisario) who restores balance and perspective in the midst of his downward spiral. Working together as a team, their research ultimately leads Isaac to a shocking and profound scientific discovery. “Over the last few years we have entered a new era of science fiction storytelling whereby scientific accuracy and plausibility have superseded pure fantasy as the convention which audiences have come to expect from the genre.” says Sherman.”’CLARA' is a film which aims to deliver on these elevated expectations, while telling a distinctly human and emotional story of self-discovery and love which we can all relate to. I’m truly humbled to have the opportunity to tell this story with Patrick and Troian, and with the full support of Serendipity Point Films." Says producer Ari Lantos, “It’s incredibly exciting to be working with such a gifted and sophisticated young filmmaker. -
