An Annotated Micro-history and Bibliography of the Houghton Shahnama by Burzine Waghmar In 1981 Stuart Welch and Martin Dickson published a study of [a] strange and amazing book in two volumes so huge and expensive as almost to be unreadable except in the best libraries. For a novel I am working on, I studied, this spring, the volumes of The Houghton Shahnameh (Harvard University Press) in the New York Public Library, and was astounded and delighted by the writers’ eccentric scholarship. By examining and re-examining pictures of countless kings, princesses, soldiers, heroes, servants, horses, camels, rabbits, demons, dragons, birds, balconies, gardens, flowers, trees, leaves, hunters, lions, lovers, dreams and dreamers. Dickson and Welch rebuilt a lost culture and restored a lost history to minute details. The delightful book, with its imaginative and eccentric scholarship, reminds me of Nabokov’s translations of and commentary on Pushkin’s Eugene Ogin, and John Livingstone Lowe’s The Road to Xanadu. — ORHAN PAMUK So for a great Safavid manuscript the binder, the calligrapher, the illustrating painter or painters, the illuminator proper, the margin-gilder, and the ruler, with all the highly specialized rules of their crafts and with all the personal variety imprinted by the varying delicacies and strengths of various hands and minds, yet in their several mysteries all labored with kindred notions of the beautiful. Nazari 1 Jessamine Nazari 07 January 2018 The Shadow Government: Influence of Elite Safavid Women Introduction Until recently, the history of women in Safavid Iran has remained practically unexplored by scholars and historians. The lack of research done on women of the period can be mostly attributed to the scarcity of information available.1 One cause of this lack of material is the political and religious climate of Safavid Iran, which naturally lent to Muslim historiographers chronicling a masculine view of history. And when women, almost alway in the higher classes of society, were deemed important enough to penetrate the patriarchal records, their lives and aspirations were usually generalized as hopes to see their sons acquire power.2 Another factor is the decentralized structure of the judicial system of the Safavids, which has resulted in court records being scattered all over Iran.3 Records like wills, marriage contracts, and trade documents are essential to the understanding of any culture.4 The lack of these documents have left holes in the knowledge of daily Safavid life. The impact of the Netherlandish art on Persian Miniature in Safavid era 1588 - 1722 by Forough Sajadi Supervisor Professor Antoni Ziemba Warsaw of University Department of history February 2020 1/93 Abstract This dissertation focuses on the impact of Netherlandish art on the development of Farangi Sāzi in the Safavid period during 1588-1722. This impact was examined in two parts: first, examining a group of the Europeanized artworks that were executed by Persian royal painters, and second, the sojourn of eleven Netherlandish painters in Persia, specifically the service of three painters in the royal library. IMAGES OF MADONNA IN IMPERIAL MUGHAL PAINTINGS: OCCIDENTAL ORIENTATIONS Soujit Das and Ila Gupta Abstract: Western explorers of 15th-16th century, all throughout the world, ventured with two primary motives. Firstly, their adventurous mind wanted to expand their knowledge about the 'other'/ non-European world and secondly, to propagate Christianity. The early missionaries in Mughal India, had mistaken Akbar’s interest in Christianity to be his weakness and thought of getting a hold of the empire through the conversion of the Emperor himself. Akbar wanted to educate himself and his followers in the spiritual and intellectual aspects of Christianity but never wished to convert. Akbar was fascinated with the new imagery from the Christian world and he instructed his court painters to copy them. This attempt somehow created a new pictorial vocabulary which was a unique expression of cultural interaction. This process of image borrowing juxtaposed many sacred entities with the profane, thus in the process, the idea of divinity is often curbed at the hand of the artist. The pictorial process of subjugation starts with the process of acceptance. If a culture or a state outwardly rejects the ‘other’, then probably the supremacy of both cultures becomes evident. Once a culture accepts another without refuting, it tends to play the role of a greater patron. The acceptance of the 'Christian' imageries could be seen as a method of tolerance as well as a subtle assault on the western world and the Christian religion. The images of Madonna were of prime importance as it continued to impress Akbar and his successor Jahangir. -

Ahmad al-Kindi These three quotations—two aphorisms and a poem—that extol the virtues of books are among the numerous examples gathered by Ibn al-Nadim in his tenth-century survey of Muslim culture.1 His Fihrist also contains a section on the virtues of calligraphy compris- ing a list of sayings of wise men from the pre-Islamic period up to his own time. Ibn al- Nadim was not alone. Other authors both then and after recorded a rich body of sayings about books and calligraphy. Some of these collections—one example is by Abu Hayyan al-Tawhidi (d. after 1009–102)—were prefaced by discourses on technical matters and some by glosses on terms commonly used to refer to the formal features of calligraphy. Sayings about calligraphy often constituted the content of calligraphic specimens and col- lectively became the lore about the practice that was transmitted by the calligraphers themselves and was thus not only limited to works of belles-lettres. Literature on the value of calligraphy, the preeminent art form of Islamic cultures, grew rapidly during the period of the Abbasid caliphate and continued until the sixteenth cen- tury.
