Our bespoke itinerary takes us on a tour of the best mountain biking in the rugged western part of the country, transferring between locations, staying in family-run hotels and with time for sightseeing in Skopje, in Tetova and in the UNESCO-losted lakeside town of Ohrid. Predominantly off-road riding on 4WD tracks and trails, our explorations take us to the Shar (Sar) Mountains above the ski station of Popova Shapka, to the stunning Mavrovo and Galicica national parks, to Lake Ohrid on the border with Albania and into the Vodno Mountains above Skopje. With a selection of excellent day-rides, far-reaching views and a wealth of ancient ruins and cultural interest, this Macedonian adventure has something for everyone. Is this holiday for you? MOUNTAIN BIKING. Six days of guided mountain biking, averaging 45 kilometres each day, with approximately 850 metres of ascent and 1100 metres of descent each day. The cycling is largely on rough mountain roads and forest tracks, with some sections of not-very-technical singletrack, this is a holiday for regular weekend bikers with reasonable off-road skills and level of fitness. We will be riding for between 4 and 6 hours on each day. Baggage is transferred between hotels each day and there are several short transfers. Please note that there is no vehicle support during the day-rides. BIKE HIRE AVAILABLE LOCALLY. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Popova Shapka. A single transfer from Skopje Airport is provided. We will meet at the group accommodation in Popova Shapka. Here, we discover a hidden paradise and have astonishing views of one of Europe’s secret mountain regions. On our way back to the road, we ride by way of Ceripashina and the Ski Centre, then continue to the city of Tetovo, where we will visit one of the most beautiful mosques in the Balkans. In Tetovo, we will also take a break for Turkish coffee, before driving to our hotel in Bistra. Today we cycle the first of two days through the Mavrovo National Park. Riding an ever changing combination of surfaced and hard-pack gravel roads leads us through a fairytale scene of grassy meadows and snowy peaks. Our route today follows the Radika River and depending on conditions the finishing point today will be decided on the day. Finishing the day with the short transfer back to our charming Bistra hotel, we refuel with traditional Macedonian cuisine. Biking into the Bistra Mountains takes us alongside the emerald green Mavrovo Lake, with visits to the villages of Nikiforovo and Leunovo. We continue off-road to Galicnik, whilst riding through green pastures dotted with ancient sheepfolds. Galicnik is one of the most beautiful mountain villages in Macedonia, with houses built in an old traditional Macedonian style. A long downhill through forest then leads to the roadhead village of Tresonche, where the way of life has changed remarkably little since the 19th century. Here, we are picked up and transfer to our hotel accommodation in Ohrid. In the evening we will go out to a local winery and have dinner there with an included wine tasting. Straddling the border with Albania, Jablanica is one of the few places where the Balkan lynx can be spotted. Starting with a dirt road climb, our route today takes us close to the Albanian border and through traditional Macedonian mountain life. From our highpoint, we follow the Albanian Border on a superb 14 kilometre descent directly to Lake Ohrid. Continuing to cycle around Lake Ohrid we stop by a local fish restaurant for a traditional lunch. On return to Ohrid town, the rest of the afternoon is yours to explore the historic streets and sights of this UNESCO-listed town. From Eleshec, we drive to the picturesque fishing village of Trpejca for lunch, then transfer back to Skopje. www.keadventure.com UK: +44(0) 17687 73966 US (toll-free): 1-888-630-4415 PAGE 4 HIGH TRAILS OF MACEDONIA ACCOMMODATION ASCENT 900M DISTANCE 40KM GPS DATA VIEW HOTEL NOW MEALS BLD DESCENT 1280M TIME 5 HRS CYCLING HOURS Day 7: A day of singletrack riding on Vodno Mountain followed by afternoon sightseeing in Skopje. • Slovenia Have Been Remarkable
Mrak/Rojec/Silva-Jáur lovenia’s achievements over the past several years Slovenia have been remarkable. Thirteen years after Public Disclosure Authorized independence from the former Socialist Federative egui Republic of Yugoslavia, the country is among the most advanced of all the transition economies in Central and Eastern Europe and a leading candidate for accession to the European Union Sin May 2004. Remarkably, however, very little has been published Slovenia documenting this historic transition. Fr om Y In the only book of its kind, the contributors—many of them the architects of Slovenia’s current transformation—analyze the country’s three-fold ugoslavia to the Eur transition from a socialist to a market economy, from a regionally based to a national economy, and from being a part of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia to being an independent state and a member of the European Union (EU). With chapters from Slovenia’s president, a former vice prime minister, Public Disclosure Authorized the current and previous ministers of finance, the minister of European affairs, the current and former governors of the Bank of Slovenia, as well as from leading development scholars in Slovenia and abroad, this unique opean Union collection synthesizes Slovenia’s recent socioeconomic and political history and assesses the challenges ahead. Contributors discuss the Slovenian style of socioeconomic transformation, analyze Slovenia’s quest for EU membership, and place Slovenia’s transition within the context of the broader transition process taking place in Central and Eastern Europe. Of interest to development practitioners and to students and scholars of the region, Slovenia: From Yugoslavia to the European Union is a From Yugoslavia comprehensive and illuminating study of one country’s path to political and economic independence.

The relief, the climatic conditions, the hydrological and vegetative features, enhanced by human creativity, all contribute to making this region a particularly special place where the gifts of the nature and the resourcefulness of humans can be admired. The National Park Mavrovo encompasses numerous rivers, which present a real jewel in the crown of beauty for the mountain landscape, with their wild rapids, water-falls and incredible transparency: always full with clear and cold water, the springs never get muddy. One of the most impressive parts of the park are the striking gorges of the river Radika. The most dramatic is the Baric gorge. The horizon in front of the observer completely closes leaving open only the blue sky and the steep ascending rocks, in some places 1,500 m high.
