Further distribution or reproduction in any format is prohibited without the permission of the copyright holder. ABSTRACT Trilobites from the Ludlow and Přídolí of England and Wales are described. A total of 15 families; 36 genera and 53 species are documented herein, including a new genus and seventeen new species; fourteen of which remain under open nomenclature. Most of the trilobites in the British late Silurian are restricted to the shelf, and predominantly occur in the Elton, Bringewood, Leintwardine, and Whitcliffe groups of Wales and the Welsh Borderland. The Elton to Whitcliffe groups represent a shallowing upwards sequence overall; each is characterised by a distinct lithofacies and fauna. The trilobites and brachiopods of the Coldwell Formation of the Lake District Basin are documented, and are comparable with faunas in the Swedish Colonus Shale and the Mottled Mudstones of North Wales. Ludlow trilobite associations, containing commonly co-occurring trilobite taxa, are defined for each palaeoenvironment. -

Evans Received: 4 November 2018 / Accepted: 13 February 2019 / Published online: 14 March 2019 Ó Akademie der Naturwissenschaften Schweiz (SCNAT) 2019 Abstract High-level classification of the nautiloid cephalopods has been largely neglected since the publication of the Russian and American treatises in the early 1960s. Although there is broad general agreement amongst specialists regarding the status of nautiloid orders, there is no real consensus or consistent approach regarding higher ranks and an array of superorders utilising various morphological features has been proposed. With work now commencing on the revision of the Treatise Part K, there is an urgent need for a methodical and standardised approach to the high-level classification of the nautiloids. The scheme proposed here utilizes the form of muscle attachment scars as a diagnostic feature at subclass level; other features (including siphuncular structures and cameral deposits) are employed at ordinal level. We recognise five sub- classes of nautiloid cephalopods (Plectronoceratia, Multiceratia, Tarphyceratia nov., Orthoceratia, Nautilia) and 18 orders including the Order Rioceratida nov. which contains the new family Bactroceratidae. This scheme has the advantage of relative simplicity (it avoids the use of superorders) and presents a balanced approach which reflects the considerable morphological diversity and phylogenetic longevity of the nautiloids in comparison with the ammonoid and coleoid cephalopods. -

RUBINSTEIN, MARCO VECOLI, WEN HUI WANG AND KUI YAN 6 7 8 Abstract 9 10 First Appearance Data (FADs) of selected, easily recognizable acritarch morphotypes 11 are assessed to determine their potential contribution to correlation of Lower and Middle 12 Ordovician stages and substage divisions along the Gondwanan margin (Perigondwana) and 13 between Perigondwana and other palaeocontinents. The FADs of nineteen genera, species 14 and species groups are recorded throughout their biogeographical ranges. The taxa 15 investigated fall into three groups. Some have FADs at about the same level throughout their 16 biogeographical ranges and are useful for long-distance and intercontinental correlation. 17 Among these are: Coryphidium, Dactylofusa velifera, Peteinosphaeridium and 18 Rhopaliophora in the upper Tremadocian Stage; Arbusculidium filamentosum, Aureotesta 19 clathrata simplex and Coryphidium bohemicum in the lower–middle Floian Stage; 20 Dicrodiacrodium in the upper Floian Stage; Frankea in the Dapingian–lower Darriwilian 21 stages; and Orthosphaeridium spp., with FADs in the Dapingian–lower Darriwilian stages of 22 Perigondwanan regions and at about the same level in Baltica. Other taxa, however, have 23 diachronous (or apparently diachronous) FADs, and this needs to be taken into account when 24 using them for correlation. Memoirs of the Association of Australasian Palaeontologists 45, 215-232. ISSN 0810-8889. The Early Ordovician genus Pseudohystricurus Ross has been treated as a minor taxonomic wastebasket for poorly known species featuring small, dorsally convex cranidia and tuberculate sculpture. No previously assigned species apart from the type species appear to belong to the genus. The type species, P. obesus Ross, has been known in its type area from only a single cranidium. New collections demonstrate that it is confined to the recently proposed P. obesus Zone, the uppermost trilobite zone of the Stairsian Stage. The species is revised on the basis of new collections from the type locality in the Garden City Formation, southeastern Idaho, and from the Fillmore Formation, western Utah. The genus is known from the underlying Pseudoclelandia cornupsittaca Zone from a species described in open nomenclature from the Fillmore Formation. The oldest known species is P. wigglesorum sp. nov., from the Bearriverops alsacharovi Zone of the Garden City Formation. Details of developmental morphology revealed by silicified specimens offer compelling evidence thatPseudohystricurus is closely related to the Middle–Late Ordovician Dimeropyge Öpik. Jonathan M. Boundary|Time|Surface was an ephemeral sculptural work created to interrogate the human practice of dividing the Earth for social, political, scientific and aesthetic reasons. The 150-metre-long work comprised a fence of 52 vertical driftwood 15 poles, 2-3 metres tall, positioned along an international boundary stratotype at Green Point, Newfoundland, Canada, separating Ordovician from Cambrian strata. Geology has as its basis the establishment of limits and boundaries within the Earth. Pioneers of geology defined the periods of the geologic timescale with the intent of representing natural chapters in Earth history; from their colonialist perspective, it was anticipated that these would have global application. Since the mid-20th century, stratigraphers have attempted to resolve 20 the resulting gaps and overlaps by establishing international stratotypes. Artists creating work in dialogue with the land and environment have taken a wide range of approaches, from major, permanent interventions to extremely ephemeral activities, some of which echo practices in geological fieldwork. -

Neverthe- less, in certain situations, they may provide useful biostratigraphical data, particularly where other biostratigraphically valuable taxa are not present; or in certain situations demonstrate a resolution as great as, or greater than ammonoids, trilobites, grapto- lites or conodonts. Nautiloid cephalopods are of especial value in palaeobiogeographical studies, but their use for this purpose may be hampered by the poor understanding of the stratigraphical ranges of individual taxa. The biostratigraphical value of nautiloid cephalopods is demonstrated here through a number of case studies of Ordovician taxa, combined with a review of their biostrati- graphical use in Palaeozoic and Mesozoic successions. These both demonstrate the potential of this group and indicate great scope for further research. The trilobite order Proetida forms a minor but important faunal element within the Ordovician strata of Baltoscandia. This review follows the current systematic, taxonomic, and stratigraphical usage and discusses the distribution of these trilobites within the context of the Confacies Belt model. A database of species-level information was derived from numerous publications relating to the Scandinavian and Baltic states and relevant neighbouring regions. Important additional information on strati- graphical occurrences of genera has been derived from glacial erratic boulders (geschiebe) from northern Germany and adjacent areas. The representatives from Baltoscandia of three superfamilies, Bathyuroidea, Aulacopleuroidea, and Proetoidea, are listed. The genus level was chosen as the most practicable to plot on the maps, one showing the time interval for the Kukruse Regional Stage (or Global Stage Slice Sa1), the other that for the Pirgu and Porkuni stages (or stage slices Ka4 and Hi1–Hi2). These intervals each show a diversity peak within the ranges of about 30 genera of Proetida and over 70 species from the Ordovician successions of Baltoscandia. Out of these a total of nine genera cross the Ordovician–Silurian boundary. -

KING Abstract: Estonioceratid nautiloids are a common and attractive component of mid-Ordovician (early Darriwilian) cephalopod faunas in Baltoscandia. Their distinctive conchs are typically loosely coiled, and vary from forms which possess an apically coiled portion with divergent final whorl, to open gyrocones and even torticones. This paper briefly reviews the taxonomy of several mainly Swedish and Estonian estonioceratid genera which were formerly poorly known at the time of the publication of the Tarphycerida section of the ‘Nautiloid Treatise Part K’ (FURNISH & GLENISTER 1964) or have been described since. A low diversity Sinuites gastropod community from the Floian, Early Ordovi cian, of South Wales. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 66 (2): 319–335. A low diversity Sinuitesdominated gastropod community is described from the Floian, Arenig Series, of the Llangynog Inlier, southwest of Carmarthen, South Wales. The abundant material comes from shallowwater siltstone and mudstone beds of the Bolahaul Member of the Ogof Hên Formation. The locality has an exceptionally diverse molluscdominated fauna (63.5% of the fauna), with gastropods constituting 6% and tergomyans 1% and echinoderms, arthropods and other fauna making up the rest. Except for one rare tergomyan mollusc, identified as Carcassonnella cf. vizcainoi, other tergo myans are described elsewhere. Nearly half of all gastropod specimens are represented by Sinuites ramseyensis. Three of the five taxa described are new: Mimospira llangynogensis sp. nov., Catalanispira prima sp. nov., and Ceratopea? moridunensis sp. nov. The assemblage compares best with those of contemporaneous highlatitude periGondwana areas. Early Ordovician species of Carcassonnella are typically found in France, Iberia, Czech Republic, and Morocco, while species of Mimospira are found in Germany and Czech Republic, but also in Baltica where the main radiation took place later. Two of the oldest occurrences of Mimospira are from Avalonian Wales (Carmarthenshire and Anglesey). Catalanispira occurs later in Baltica and Laurentia in the late Middle and early Late Ordovician, when taxa from these areas start to appear in Wales and vice versa.
