JOHN EVELYN AND MEDICINE* by C. D. O'MALLEY JOHN EvELYN has often been described as a virtuoso in the seventeenth-century meaning of that word, and if it be recalled that the Earl of Arundel, the greatest of the virtuosi was his patron, that Evelyn was a member of the Royal Society almost from its inception and a diligent attendant of its meetings, which at that time dealt with a wide variety of curiosa and technological as well as scientific problems, that he was a vocal and literary exponent and collector of the odd and the artistic, and a recognized authority on architecture and gardens, he must certainly be classed among the notable virtuosi of his day. But within his multifarious interests and their related activities Evelyn appears to have had a particular regard for medicine, one that transcended the usual concern of those members of his class who did not espouse that subject professionally. Except for somewhat intermittent studies at Oxford, undertaken more as an obligation than because of genuine desire, medicine was the only discipline in which he deliberately took any formal instruction, and throughout the many years covered by his Diary medicine and matters ancillary to it received uncommon attention." Anyone living in the seventeenth century was very much aware of accident, disease, and ever proximate death. It was quite in the order of things that Evelyn, born in 1620, recalled from his fifth year the severe plague in 1625, its high mortality and the fact, as he later wrote, that he himself 'was shortly after so dangerously sick of a Feavor, that (as I have heard), the Physitians despair'd of me' (ii.7).2 He was fourteen years old when his sister Elizabeth died (ii.12), fifteen at the death of his mother, whose four attending physicians were identified by name in the Diary (ii.14-15), and twenty at the time of his father's death (ii.26). -

The consensus among some current scholars is that Jonson overtly practices and advocates misogyny in his dramas. Such theorists suggest that Jonson both embodies and promulgates the anti woman rhetoric of his time, basing their position on contemporary cultural material, religious tracts, and the writings of King James I. -

While an awareness of the efflorescence has helped recover a fuller picture of the historical landscape, the enterprise did not foment an appreciable change in Arabic grammatical or linguistic expertise for the majority of seventeenth-century university students learning the language. As a result, the desuetude of Arabic Studies by the 1660s has been regarded as further evidence for the conclusion that the project reaped insubstantial benefits for the history of science and for the Scientific Revolution. Rather, this inquiry contends that the influence of the Arabic transmission of Greek philosophical works extended beyond Renaissance Italy to Stuart England, which not only shared a continuity with the continental reception of Latinized Arabic texts but selectively investigated some sources of original Arabic scientific ideas and methods with new rigor. -

His masterpiece, Gulliver’s Travels, an apparently simple travel book - among many others of the time- seems to camouflage, nevertheless, a brilliant satire that does not differ too much from the political essays and pamphlets published by the same author. In those writings, he harshly criticized the situation of his country by not only blaming Irish politicians and the British government, but also the own population and the stupidity of the human race. In this dissertation, I intend to find out about the author’s ideology through the study of the ideas captured in his literature. For this purpose, I have first analyzed four of Jonathan Swift’s political essays. Then, I have examined Gulliver’s Travels from the perspective of the conclusions reached through these first readings in order to expose the connection between Swift’s political treatises and his fiction. 11 Donaldson 1573 11/10/07 15:05 Page 319 SHAKESPEARE LECTURE Shakespeare, Jonson, and the Invention of the Author IAN DONALDSON Fellow of the Academy THE LIVES AND CAREERS OF SHAKESPEARE and Ben Jonson, the two supreme writers of early modern England, were intricately and curiously interwoven. Eight years Shakespeare’s junior, Jonson emerged in the late 1590s as a writer of remarkable gifts, and Shakespeare’s greatest theatri- cal rival since the death of Christopher Marlowe. Shakespeare played a leading role in the comedy that first brought Jonson to public promi- nence, Every Man In His Humour, having earlier decisively intervened— so his eighteenth-century editor, Nicholas Rowe, relates—to ensure that the play was performed by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, who had ini- tially rejected the manuscript.1 Shakespeare’s name appears alongside that of Richard Burbage in the list of ‘principal tragedians’ from the same company who performed in Jonson’s Sejanus in 1603, and it has been con- jectured that he and Jonson may even have written this play together.2 During the years of their maturity, the two men continued to observe Read at the Academy 25 April 2006. 1 The Works of Mr William Shakespeare, ed. Reception Theories. White Is an Interesting Choice for Author of This
102 Book Reviews reception theories. White is an interesting choice for author of this particular essay because he is at odds with much of what the primary perspective of the volume represents. He writes, of a broadly defined materialist criticism, that while it ‘opens up new interpretation ...itisfair to say that it risks losing some of the strengths of earlier modes like new criticism, which focused attention on textual details, and formalism, which illuminates dramatic structure in ways that explain theatrical effect’ (290). Although his essay could hardly be called dissenting, it does remind us how much might be lost in the name of theory. Any book that offers itself as a work of reference should have reasonably up-to-date bibliographies. Each essay here is followed by its own reading list, but they vary widely in quality and comprehensiveness. Honigmann’s contains only four titles, two of them published in the 1930s. Mowat’s contains 21, almost all of them published after 1986. The volume aims to make up for this inconsistency with Dieter Mehl’s valuable survey ‘Shakespeare reference books’. This is an updating of his contribution to the 1986 volume, in which under a variety of subheadings he identifies the best or most useful reference tools, including a number of Internet sites. There is one interesting omission. In his 1986 survey Mehl included in the category ‘handbooks’ the 1971 Companion edited by Muir and Schoenbaum. It is gone from his updated survey and is not replaced by the 1986 volume. The implicit though surely unintended suggestion that the new Companion has displaced its predecessor should, I think, be ignored. -
