Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena

The miracle of the Eucharist that caused the to institute the feast of Corpus Christi

In 1263 a German Priest, Peter of Prague, was on pilgrimage to and celebrated Mass at St. Christina’s Church in Bolsena, Italy. Although he was a pious priest, he had doubt that Jesus was really present in the consecrated Host.

Shortly after he elevated the Host and said the words of consecration, “This is my Body,” the consecrated Host turned into Flesh and began to bleed profusely. The blood trickled over his hands onto the altar and the corporal (linen cloth), spilling on the marble floor. Shocked and confused at the situation, the priest interrupted Mass, wrapped the Host in the corporal, folded the linen cloth and left the altar.

He went to the neighbouring city of Orvieto, where Pope Urban IV was residing. After hearing the priest`s account of the story, Pope Urban IV sent his emissaries to investigate. When the facts were verified, he ordered the Bishop of Orvieto to bring the Host and linen cloth bearing the stains of blood to him and had the placed in the cathedral where they are still reverently enshrined, displayed and preserved to this day.

As a result of the Eucharistic miracle of Bolseno, Pope Urban IV

instituted the Feast of CORPUS CHRISTI in honour of the Blessed Sacrament. He commissioned St. to compose the Office of the Mass to celebrate the Most Holy Body of the Lord. The treasured hymns composed by St. Thomas Aquinas for
