Set 30 miles North of Paris in one of the largest forests on the French capital outskirts, the elegant small town of Chantilly is well known for the sweet and fluffy cream which bears its name as well as for its racecourse where prestigious horse races are held each year. But it is even more famous for its beautiful and imposing château surroun- ded by an artificial lake and three magnificent gardens: one French-style designed by André Le Nôtre in the 17th century, one Anglo-Chinese created in the 18th century and one English-style set up in the 19th century. A storybook vision, the Domaine de Chantilly offers its visitors an opportunity to travel back in time as its history began eight centuries ago.

One of the finest jewels of France’s cultural heritage, it was owned in the past by several princely dynasties, which all contributed to its development. One man in parti- cular made it such an interesting place worth visiting: Henri of Orléans (1822-1897). Also known as the Duke of Aumale, he was the fifth son of Queen Marie-Amélie and the last King of France, Louis-Philippe, and is considered the greatest collector of his time. He not only had the château (which was completely demolished during the French Revolution) rebuilt by the architect Honoré Daumet in the late 1870ies, but he made it the showcase for his collection of hundreds of paintings, drawings, engravings and even photographies housed in the Musée Condé, named as a tribute to his illustrious predecessors, the Princes of Condé. The most remarkable artworks include paintings by Sandro Botticelli, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Eugène Delacroix, Giotto, Filippino Lippi, Nicolas Poussin, Raphael, Anthony van Dyck and Jean-Antoine Watteau and the Musée Condé is considered as the second most significant museum of ancient paintings after the Louvre in Paris. Also an enthusiastic bibliophile, the Duke of Aumale acquired an impressive number of books from all over Europe. More than 19,000 precious books and medieval manuscripts are gathered in the Reading Room, making it the second largest library in France for illuminated manuscripts after France National Library.

Another part of the Domaine de Chantilly not to be missed is a masterpiece of the 18th century architecture: the 186 metres (610 feet) long Great Stables which were designed by the architect Jean Aubert between 1719 and 1740 for Louis-Henri de Bourbon, the 7th prince of Condé, who was convinced he would be reincarnated as a horse! They are the biggest stables in Europe. Since 1982, part of the building has been housing the Living Museum of the Horse, composed of 31 rooms filled with artworks and pieces depicting the relation between horse and human being starting from the beginning of civilization.
