  • A Study on Dallagaon Homestay & Its Sustainability
A Study on Dallagaon Homestay and Its Sustainability Nepal Rastra Bank Nepalgunj Office Banking Development and Research Unit January 2015 Forewords Despite lots of prospects for tourism-led development, the tourism sector still holds a meager share in Nepal's GDP. The tourism benefits have also not reached up to the grass-root levels. A cause for this is that tourism has been mostly sought in and around the major destinations and trekking trails only. A broader view on tourism is required to promote it beyond mainstream areas. As an effort, alternative forms of tourism are growing in the country since last few years. One of them is homestay tourism. The Tharu community from mid-west Nepal has also started their unique homestay program namely "Khata Biological Corridor Homestay" since the year 2011 in Dalla village which lies in the Suryapatuwa VDC of Bardiya district. Since a well-timed appraisal of such programs together with the analysis of their socio-economic impact and sustainability can be helpful to improve contribution of such programs and also the overall tourism sector in the national economy, the study on this subject was found to be significant. As part of the study, a pilot visit of the study area was made to select the respondents and test the study-questionnaires. During final visit, 70 different respondents from homestay households, non-homestay households, guests and the homestay management committee were contacted to fill out the study-questionnaires. A focus group discussion was also conducted. The study report has been organized into five sections. The first section presents introduction.

Standards, Training, and Guests' Perceptions in Luxury Hotels Abstract Very few hotels are able to consider themselves to be truly luxury. These hotels hold a certain mystique that invites their guests to continually return, no matter what the cost is. While luxury is providing something exclusive that is not found everywhere, it is also becoming more about the experience (Allcock, 2007). Today, luxury hotels are aiming for ultra-luxury, and to do this, service and people factors make a huge difference (Tungate, 2009). The luxury concept includes being exclusive, sophisticated, and indulging your guests (Allcock, 2007). It is crucial that the design and service follow these concepts (Gunter, 2005). These hotels are expected to provide their guests with the best of everything (Sheehan, 2007). Maintaining this level of service is done through understanding guests’ expectations, setting service standards to meet these expectations, training the staff ot follow these service standards, guiding the guests’ experiences, and identifying and closing service gaps.

  • An Investigation Into Communication at the Hotel Front Desk
Interactional structures and engagement in service encounters: An investigation into communication at the hotel front desk Géraldine Bengsch PhD University of York Sociology March 2016 Abstract The main aim of the study was to explore the specifics of communicative behaviour at the hotel reception that establish the institutional character of the interaction to accomplish a service encounter. The hotel provides a unique environment for research related to global communication and questions of politeness usage. Investigating conversations between hotel receptionists and their guests was used to demonstrate how interdisciplinary approaches can further knowledge in a globalised world order. Nine and a half hours of naturally occurring interactions between receptionists and guests were videotaped in four hotels in three European countries (England, Germany and Spain). The analysis was conducted using Conversation Analysis (CA) as the primary method and enriched through the use of ethnographic notes. CA was used to show how normative social structures are invoked in service encounters at the hotel front desk. Ethnographic insights provided additional evidence for how the interactions are anchored in the social reality. The findings suggest that conversations at the front desk are highly structured and possess features similar to institutional and mundane interactions. Conversations were classed into three phases (arrival, stay and departure), each of which has observable and robust interactional features. It is proposed that an effective encounter between hotel guest and receptionist is not solely reliant on a particular structure. Instead, the results indicate that a very specific amount of engagement by both the service provider and the customer is required. Thus, following the tradition of CA, it is demonstrated how precisely participants can organise their talk and behaviour according to a mutual preference of both guest and receptionist.
