Each part Wed (6/23) at 9pm and 10pm on GBH 2 explores a different aspect from a variety of perspectives: A four-hour documentary series. Presented in two blocks on consecutive nights, the broadcast series goes back into the history of mental illness and questions societal norms through the ages. Next, it examines mental asylums and prison, where care was often inhumane. The last episode looks at cutting-edge treatments and the fight for inclusion. Short-form digital videos. Each video reveals how mental illness, and the healthcare industry surrounding it, specifically impacts communities of color (see “Exploring Mental Health in Marginalized Communities,” next page). Virtual events. Panels and screenings across the country engage com- munity members on topics related to mental illness. Website resources. The Mysteries of Mental Illness website offers a robust set of articles, videos, toolkits and other resources from a wide range of national and local services and organizations on issues related to mental health. Social media. GBH is extending the reach of the series through live streaming on Facebook or other social platforms, expanding audience access to notable voices, including celebrity activists and mental health experts. “Today, Americans are more likely to need services from a mental health professional than any other medical specialty, yet the diagnosis of a mental disorder carries a stigma that a heart condition or other physical ailment doesn’t,” said Denise DiIanni (top left), senior execu- tive in charge at GBH Studio Six. “Through this multiplatform initia- tive, we hope to bring this important story to audiences in all settings to help give voice to people across a spectrum of experiences,” she said. Mysteries of Mental Illness filmmakersPeter Yost (center left) and Edna Alburquerque (bottom left) look for stories that are universal. The award-winning team from Pangloss Films has filmed a number of science-based programs, including What’s Living in You?, a NOVA series that uncovers the surprising secrets of the human biome. 14 EXPLORE GBH | JUNE 2021 COVER STORY Out of the Shadows Mental Illness: Past, Present and Future “The topic of mental health really goes to the core of what it means to be human,” Yost said. “It asks: What does it mean to be ‘normal,’ and is there even such a thing?” The stigma is real, said Alburquerque, who has witnessed how it has affected her own friends and family who have struggled with mental disorders. “And recovery is never really linear,” she said. “Everyone has ups and downs.” Both said they were inspired by the courage of the people in the film who spoke openly about their mental illness. The personal experi- ences give viewers an inside look at what it’s like to live with it on a daily basis. Olympic boxer Fuchs (top right) shares her story about her obsessive-compulsive disorder, showing how the world-class athlete uses as many as 12 toothbrushes every time she brushes her teeth. Keeping quiet about mental illness is a common away many people have dealt with symptoms. Pastor Michael Walrond (upper right) suffered bouts of depression but never sought help because it was something that was not done in the Black community where he lived. Transgender woman Mia Yamamoto (lower right) describes what it was like growing up feeling completely alone trying to figure out if there was something wrong with her. Meanwhile, recent scientific breakthroughs have started to find biological explanations for some types of mental distress. Journalist Susannah Cahalan (bottom right) documents her psychosis and feelings of hopelessness before she was diagnosed with a rare brain condition that causes rapid changes in mental health. “Each one of them represents a spectrum of human experience that provides an important addition to a worthwhile conversation,” Yost said. Alburquerque added, “I hope lots of people will see themselves or their loved ones in this film and realize they’re not alone.”
