Focus Type: • Fixed Focus means the photographer is not able to adjust the focal point. These cameras tend to have a large depth of field. This might include basic disposable cameras. • Auto Focus means the camera automatically adjusts the optics in the lens to bring the subject into focus. The camera typically selects what to focus on. However, the photographer may also be able to select the focal point using a touch screen for example, but the camera will automatically adjust the lens. This might include digital cameras and mobile device cameras, such as phones and tablets. • Manual Focus allows the photographer to manually adjust and control the lens’ focus by hand, usually by turning the focus ring. Camera Type: Indicate whether the camera is digital or film. (The following Questions are for Unit 2 and 3 exhibitors only.) Did you manually adjust the aperture, shutter speed, or ISO? Indicate whether you adjusted these settings to capture the photo. Note: Regardless of whether or not you adjusted these settings manually, you must still identify the images specific F Stop, Shutter Sped, ISO, and Focal Length settings. “Auto” is not an acceptable answer. Digital cameras automatically record this information for each photo captured. 1 Depth-aware Blending of Smoothed Images for Bokeh Effect Generation Saikat Duttaa,∗∗ aIndian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, PIN-600036, India ABSTRACT Bokeh effect is used in photography to capture images where the closer objects look sharp and every- thing else stays out-of-focus. Bokeh photos are generally captured using Single Lens Reflex cameras using shallow depth-of-field. Most of the modern smartphones can take bokeh images by leveraging dual rear cameras or a good auto-focus hardware. However, for smartphones with single-rear camera without a good auto-focus hardware, we have to rely on software to generate bokeh images. This kind of system is also useful to generate bokeh effect in already captured images. In this paper, an end-to-end deep learning framework is proposed to generate high-quality bokeh effect from images. The original image and different versions of smoothed images are blended to generate Bokeh effect with the help of a monocular depth estimation network. The proposed approach is compared against a saliency detection based baseline and a number of approaches proposed in AIM 2019 Challenge on Bokeh Effect Synthesis. Extensive experiments are shown in order to understand different parts of the proposed algorithm. The network is lightweight and can process an HD image in 0.03 seconds. DOF refers to the zone of focus in a photograph or the distance between the closest and furthest parts of the picture that are reasonably sharp. Depth of field is determined by three main attributes: 1) The APERTURE (size of the opening) 2) The SHUTTER SPEED (time of the exposure) 3) DISTANCE from the subject being photographed 4) SHALLOW and GREAT Depth of Field Explained Shallow Depth of Field: In shallow depth of field, the main subject is emphasized by making all other elements out of focus. (Foreground or background is purposely blurry) Aperture: The larger the aperture, the shallower the depth of field. Distance: The closer you are to the subject matter, the shallower the depth of field. ***You cannot achieve shallow depth of field with excessive bright light. This means no bright sunlight pictures for shallow depth of field because you can’t open the aperture wide enough in bright light.*** SHALLOW DOF STEPS: 1. Set your camera to a small f/stop number such as f/2-f/5.6. 2. GET CLOSE to your subject (between 2-5 feet away). 3. Don’t put the subject too close to its background; the farther away the subject is from its background the better. 4. Set your camera for the correct exposure by adjusting only the shutter speed (aperture is already set). 5. Find the best composition, focus the lens of your camera and take your picture. -

Chapter 4: Editing Film 125: The Textbook © Lynne Lerych The general idea behind editing in narrative film is the coordination of one shot with another in order to create a coherent, artistically pleasing, meaningful whole. The system of editing employed in narrative film is called continuity editing – its purpose is to create and provide efficient, functional transitions. Sounds simple enough, right?1 Yeah, no. It’s not really that simple. These three desired qualities of narrative film editing – coherence, artistry, and meaning – are not easy to achieve, especially when you consider what the film editor begins with. The typical shooting phase of a typical two-hour narrative feature film lasts about eight weeks. During that time, the cinematography team may record anywhere from 20 or 30 hours of film on the relatively low end – up to the 240 hours of film that James Cameron and his cinematographer, Russell Carpenter, shot for Titanic – which eventually weighed in at 3 hours and 14 minutes by the time it reached theatres. Most filmmakers will shoot somewhere in between these extremes. No matter how you look at it, though, the editor knows from the outset that in all likelihood less than ten percent of the film shot will make its way into the final product. As if the sheer weight of the available footage weren’t enough, there is the reality that most scenes in feature films are shot out of sequence – in other words, they are typically shot in neither the chronological order of the story nor the temporal order of the film. -

The movement is the act of traversing, when you film the Dance you film an act not an aestheticizing image of a subject. At the beginning it is difficult to understand how to film something that is abstract like the movement but with practice you will start to focus on what really matters and you will start to forget about the dancers. Movement is life and the more you can capture it the more the characters are alive therefore more real in a way that you can almost touch them, almost dance with them. The Dance is a movement with a rhythm and when you film it you have to become part of the whole rhythm, like when you add an instrument to a music composition, the vocabulary of cinema is just another layer on the whole art work. -

Offscreen Space From Cinema and Sculpture to Photography, Poetry, and Narrative Thomas Harrison This essay aims to explore formal limits of artistic idioms and some manners in which they are put to positive semantic use. With the help of a term borrowed from film studies, I will argue that many, if not most, artworks activate relations between spaces directly embodied by their signs (recognizable shapes in the visual arts, for example, or words in written texts) and spaces indirectly conveyed by contexts, associations, or imaginings produced outside the borders of those perceptible forms in the mind of a reader or spectator. Aspects of offscreen space are marked by the visual, aural, or conceptual perimeters of what a work actually presents onscreen, amplifying its voice or points of reference and occasionally even making the work seem somewhat partial or incomplete.1 More concrete offscreen spaces pertain to the cultures of a work’s production and reception, subject to variable methodologies of interpretation. In both cases, components of a work’s meaning are construed to lie outside its formal articulation, beyond its explicitly pictured purview, in questions or matters that it conjures up. Some aspects of the off seem primarily semiotic in nature, involving connotations or lacunae in the work’s conventions or system of signs; others appear to be functions of the material and cultural humus from which and to which a work is addressed. Either way, the offscreen spaces activated by a work of art are as constructive of the significance we attribute to it as the lines and tones and colors and words of which it is composed. -

You’ve entered the deep dark tunnel of creating a new thing…you can’t see the light of day… Some of my colleagues can tell you that I am NOT pleasant to be around when I am in the creative video-making tunnel and I feel like none of the footage I have is working the way I want it to, and I can’t seem to fix even the tiniest thing, and I’m convinced all of my work is garbage and it’s never going to work out right and… WOW. Okay deep breaths. I think it’s time to step away from the expensive equipment and go have a piece of cake…I’ll be back… Editing, for me at least, is the hardest, but also most creatively fulfilling part of the video-making process. I have such a love/hate relationship with editing because its where I start to see all the things I messed up in the planning and filming process. But it’s ALSO where - when I let it - my creativity pulls me in directions that are BETTER than I planned. Most of my best videos were okay/mediocre in the planning and filming stages, but became something special during the editing process. So, how the heck do you do it? There are lots of ways to edit, many different styles, formats and techniques you can learn. But for me at least, it comes down to being playful and open to the creative process. This is the time to release your curious and playful inner child. -
