The arena is not a different building but a renovation of Centennial Gym, which was completed in 1960. The renova- tions for King Arena were funded in large part by the late Leroy King. Five of King’s children graduated from Wheaton College, including current head volleyball coach Jennifer King Soderquist, a 1977 alumna. King also contributed to the Blanchard Hall renovation project in the 1980's and has given to the endowment of Wheaton's scholarship fund. When it was built, Centennial Gym was part of the Centennial expansion program. Planning for the facility had actually begun as early as February, 1956 in order to have it ready for the 1959-60 school year. Ground was broken for the new gym, to be built at a projected cost of $400,000 by J. Emil Anderson and Son, on Nov. 2, 1958. The new gymnasium, made of brick to harmonize with the other campus architecture, seated 3,400. At completion, fully equipped, the building cost $524,000. King Arena is part of the Sport and Recreation Center (SRC), completed in 2000, also includes the Eckert Recreation Center and the previously existing Chrouser Fitness Center. The Sports and Recreation Complex also features a weight room, student recre- ational gyms, in addition to an indoor running track. The 2,650-seat arena is equipped with four score- boards, sound system, eight basketball hoops, and ethernet connections at the scorer's table. It has seat- ing on all four sides where Centennial Gym only had two, and one side. 2013-14 THUNDER MEN'S BASKETBALL TABLE OF CONTENTS 2013-14 WHEATON COLLEGE SUPPORT STAFF AND King Arena ............ ABOUT WHEATON COLLEGE AND THUNDER ATHLETICS Wheaton College is a coeducational college of liberal arts and science combining high scholastic standards with evangelical Christian faith and practice. Located 25 miles west of Chicago, Wheaton College is a non-denominational indepen- dent school owned and operated by a self-perpetuating board of trustees. Interdenominational in constituency, the student body represents nearly all 50 states, approximately 50 countries, and about 40 church denominations. The faculty of approximately 150 members, about 80 percent with earned doctor- ates, comes from a variety of universities and colleges, both in the United States and abroad. As active Christians, they are personally interested in the spiritual and intellectual development of students. Wheaton’s 80-acre campus is located in Wheaton, Illinois, a city of nearly 50,000 residents, and the county seat of DuPage County. Other college-owned campuses include the 50-acre Black Hills Science Station near Rapid City, South Dakota, for field studies in geology and biology, and Honey Rock Camp, a 500-acre youth counseling laboratory in Wisconsin. Wheaton sponsors 22 varsity sports, as well as nine club sports and a strong intramural program. Wheaton is a member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), and Thunder teams compete at the NCAA Division III level. The following sports have varsity status: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s soc- cer, women’s softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, women’s water polo and wrestling. In addition, the 1957 men’s basketball team won the NCAA College Division championship, and the 1984 and 1997 men’s soc- cer teams won NCAA Divsion III Titles as did the 2004, 2006 and 2007 women’s soccer teams. 2013-14 THUNDER MEN'S BASKETBALL WHEATON HEAD MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH MIKE SCHAUER The 2013-14 campaign marks Mike Schauer's ffifth year as the head coach of the Wheaton men's basketball team. In 13 years as a collegiate head coach, Schauer has posted a 227-124 career record. Over his last seven- years, his teams have compiled a record of 161-60 (.729) with two conference championships and four NCAA Tour- nament appearances. He is now ninth on Wheaton's all-time three-pointer list and eighth on the school's career assists list. He remained at his alma mater as an assistant coach from 1993-2000. During this time the program enjoyed seven consecutive winning seasons, two CCIW Championships and three NCAA tournament bids. Schauer was a member of the Wheaton coaching staff in the 1994-95 season when the program made its first postseason appearance since 1959-60. He was also on the sideline in 1995-96 when the team won its first CCIW Championship since 1958-59.
