(August 2012) Evleen Michelle Nasir, B.A., Texas A&M University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Kirsten Pullen There is a discursive formation of incapability that surrounds senior women’s sexuality. Senior women are incapable of reproduction, mastering their bodies, or arousing sexual desire in themselves or others. The senior actresses’ I explore in the case studies below insert their performances of self and their everyday lives into the large and complicated discourse of sex, producing a counter-narrative to sexually inactive senior women. Their performances actively embody their sexuality outside the frame of a character. This thesis examines how senior actresses’ performances of sexuality extend a discourse of sexuality imposed on older woman by mass media. These women are the public face of senior women’s sexual agency. -

CA Students Urge Assembly Members to Pass AB
May 26, 2021 The Honorable Members of the California State Assembly State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: Thousands of CA Public School Students Strongly Urge Support for AB 101 Dear Members of the Assembly, We are a coalition of California high school and college students known as Teach Our History California. Made up of the youth organizations Diversify Our Narrative and GENup, we represent 10,000 youth leaders from across the State fighting for change. Our mission is to ensure that students across California high schools have meaningful opportunities to engage with the vast, diverse, and rich histories of people of color; and thus, we are in deep support of AB101 which will require high schools to provide ethnic studies starting in academic year 2025-26 and students to take at least one semester of an A-G approved ethnic studies course to graduate starting in 2029-30. Our original petition made in support of AB331, linked here, was signed by over 26,000 CA students and adult allies in support of passing Ethnic Studies. Please see appended to this letter our letter in support of AB331, which lists the names of all our original petition supporters. We know AB101 has the capacity to have an immense positive impact on student education, but also on student lives as a whole. For many students, our communities continue to be systematically excluded from narratives presented to us in our classrooms. By passing AB101, we can change the precedent of exclusion and allow millions of students to learn the histories of their peoples. -

Vanessa Reyes More than Just an Image: Pop Culture Representations of Latinxs and the Immigration Debate In the United States, Latinxs are the fastest growing demographic. According to the latest census data, they make up 17% of the population (roughly fifty-four million people). This growing population has raised concerns and fears among many Americans and has reignited the debate over immigration—an issue that 10% of Americans believed to be the most important problem facing the nation in 2006.1 While this demographic growth and interest in immigration is relatively recent, Latinxs have had a role in popular culture since the time of Hollywood Westerns. The exact details have changed with the times, but the underlying nature of these representations has remained the same. -
Kiss Me Deadly by Alain Silver
Kiss Me Deadly By Alain Silver “A savage lyricism hurls us into a world in full decomposition, ruled by the dissolute and the cruel,” wrote Raymond Borde and Etienne Chaumeton about “Kiss Me Deadly” in their seminal study “Panorama du Film Noir Américain.” “To these violent and corrupt intrigues, Aldrich brings the most radical of solutions: nuclear apoca- lypse.” From the beginning, “Kiss Me Deadly” is a true sensory explosion. In the pre- credit sequence writer A.I. Bezzerides and producer/director Robert Aldrich introduce Christina (Cloris Leachman), a woman in a trench coat, who stumbles out of the pitch darkness onto a two-lane blacktop. While her breathing fills the soundtrack with am- plified, staccato gasps, blurred metallic shapes flash by without stopping. She posi- tions herself in the center of the roadway until oncoming headlights blind her with the harsh glare of their high beams. Brakes grab, tires scream across the asphalt, and a Jaguar spins off the highway in a swirl of dust. A close shot reveals Mike Hammer Robert Aldrich on the set of "Attack" in 1956 poses with the first (Ralph Meeker) behind the wheel: over the edition of "Panorama of American Film Noir."
