PREREQUISITE: (i) Matrices – rank of matrix, Linear dependence and linear independence (ii) Differential Calculus – Differentiation of Implicit functions, parametric functions (iii) Ordinary Differential equations – Basic terminologies like definition, formation, meaning of solution, variable and separable method, linear differential equations. UNIT I LINEAR ALGEBRA 9 Euclidean n-space – Vector spaces – Subspaces – Linear combinations – Linear dependence and independences – Basis and dimensions – Applications to matrices: Rank of a matrix, Inner product spaces – Example of inner product spaces – Cauchy-Schwarz inequality– Orthonormal bases – Gram Schmidtt process. UNIT II MATRICES 9 Characteristic equation – Eigen values and eigen vectors of a real matrix – Properties – Cayley- Hamilton theorem (excluding proof) – Orthogonal transformation of a symmetric matrix to diagonal form – Quadratic form – Reduction of quadratic form to canonical form by orthogonal transformation UNIT III APPLICATIONS OF DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS 9 Curvature in Cartesian co-ordinates – Centre and radius of curvature – Circle of curvature – Evolutes – Envelopes.
