Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals 2nd Meeting of the Sessional Committee of the CMS Scientific Council (ScC-SC2) Bonn, Germany, 10 – 14 July 2017 UNEP/CMS/ScC-SC2/Inf.3 DISAGGREGATION OF BIRD FAMILIES LISTED ON CMS APPENDIX II (Prepared by the Appointed Councillors for Birds) Summary: The first meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council identified the adoption of a new standard reference for avian taxonomy as an opportunity to disaggregate the higher-level taxa listed on Appendix II and to identify those that are considered to be migratory species and that have an unfavourable conservation status. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. Inquiry Into the Problem of Feral and Domestic Cats in Australia to The
28 July 2020 Re: Inquiry into the problem of feral and domestic cats in Australia To the Committee Secretariat, Thank you for this opportunity to make a submission to the Inquiry into the problem of feral and domestic cats in Australia. The Society for Conservation Biology Oceania Section is the peak professional group for conservation biology in Australia, with 400 members that include conservation scientists, policy-makers and managers. Our role is to provide scientific information for management and policy decisions about the long term sustainability and future of ecosystems and their dependent organisms, recognising the importance of ecosystem services for humanity and based on the best available science. Feral and domestic cats have had severe impacts on Australian wildlife since their introduction by Europeans and will continue to do so into the foreseeable future. Feral cats threaten a large number of mammal, bird and reptile species and reducing the impacts of cats is critical to the conservation of Australia’s biodiversity. Reducing the impacts of cats is challenging and while there have been many advances in this space over the past 40 or so years, an effective, broadscale control tool remains elusive. As described in this submission, effectively reducing the impacts of cats on vulnerable fauna populations requires approaches that are tailored to the specifics of each management context, consider both lethal and non-lethal approaches, and take a whole-of-ecosystem approach, including accounting for other threats such as fire and grazing, and interactions with foxes, dingoes, rabbits and other species. We address terms of reference a, b, e, f and h in detail below. -

We started the tour in Cairns in Far North Queensland, where we found ourselves surrounded by multiple habitats from the tidal mudflats of the Cairns Esplanade, the Great Barrier Reef and its sandy cays, lush lowland and highland rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands, and we even made it to the edge of the Outback near Mount Carbine; the next leg of the tour took us south to Southeast Queensland where we spent time in temperate rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests within Lamington National Park. The third, and my favorite leg, of the tour took us down to New South Wales, where we birded a huge variety of new habitats from coastal heathland to rocky shorelines and temperate rainforests in Royal National Park, to the mallee and brigalow of Inland New South Wales. The fourth and final leg of the tour saw us on the beautiful island state of Tasmania, where we found all 13 “Tassie” endemics. We had a huge list of highlights, from finding a roosting Lesser Sooty Owl in Malanda; to finding two roosting Powerful Owls near Brisbane; to having an Albert’s Lyrebird walk out in front of us at O Reilly’s; to seeing the rare and endangered Regent Honeyeaters in the Capertee Valley, and finding the endangered Swift Parrot on Bruny Island, in Tasmania. -

AUSTRALIA: TASMANIA AND THE ORANGE-BELLIED PARROT – SET DEPARTURE TRIP REPORT 22 – 27 OCTOBER 2018 By Andy Walker We enjoyed excellent views of several of the Critically Endangered (IUCN) Orange-bellied Parrots during the tour. www.birdingecotours.com [email protected] 2 | TRIP REPORT Australia: Tasmania and the Orange-bellied Parrot: October 2018 Overview This short Tasmania group tour commenced in the state capital Hobart on the 22nd of October 2018 and concluded back there on the 27th of October 2018. The tour focused on finding the state’s endemic birds as well as two breeding endemic species (both Critically Endangered [IUCN] parrots), and the tour is a great way to get accustomed to Australian birds and birding ahead of the longer East Coast tour. The tour included a couple of days birding in the Hobart environs, a day trip by light aircraft to the southwest of the state, and a couple of days on the picturesque and bird-rich Bruny Island. We found, and got very good views of, all twelve endemic birds of Tasmania, these being Forty- spotted Pardalote, Green Rosella, Tasmanian Nativehen, Scrubtit, Tasmanian Scrubwren, Dusky Robin, Strong-billed, Black-headed, and Yellow-throated Honeyeaters, Yellow Wattlebird, Tasmanian Thornbill, and Black Currawong, as well as the two Critically Endangered breeding endemic species (Orange-bellied Parrot and Swift Parrot), of which we also got excellent and prolonged views of a sizeable proportion of their global populations. Other highlights included Little Penguin, Hooded Dotterel, Freckled Duck, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Grey Goshawk, Laughing Kookaburra, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, Blue-winged Parrot, Pink Robin, Flame Robin, Scarlet Robin, Striated Fieldwren, Southern Emu-wren, and Beautiful Firetail. -

Fires of this scale were unprecedented and not factored into recovery plans for Threatened Species or ecosystem management in general.
