Neotrance and the Psychedelic Festival GRAHAM ST JOHN UNIVERSITY OF REGINA, UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND Abstract !is article explores the religio-spiritual characteristics of psytrance (psychedelic trance), attending speci"cally to the characteristics of what I call neotrance apparent within the contemporary trance event, the countercultural inheritance of the “tribal” psytrance festival, and the dramatizing of participants’ “ultimate concerns” within the festival framework. An exploration of the psychedelic festival offers insights on ecstatic (self- transcendent), performative (self-expressive) and re!exive (conscious alternative) trajectories within psytrance music culture. I address this dynamic with reference to Portugal’s Boom Festival. Ta je odkrývána díky re-definici subkultury pomocí post- subkulturních teorií, zejména pak Maffesoliho konceptem neotribalismu a teorie dočasné autonomní zóny Hakima Beye. Práce se snaţí odkrýt obě úrovně politizace freetekno subkultury v českém prostředí pomocí analýzy dostupných dokumentů týkajících se teknivalů CzechTek, CzaroTek a pouličního festivalu DIY Karneval. DubStar* - San Francisco DubStep, Reggae, electro glitch, dub breaks hop Dubstar – aka Luke Moody first got his taste of electronic music during his sojourn down in Australia back in 1994. There he was exposed to talents such as Derrick May, Joey Beltram, Lenny D to name a few. Coming back to the states with a crate of hardcore techno vinyl and a burning desire to make people dance, Luke started dropping beats at house parties in Minneapolis. Taking his love for music and dancing further, Luke launched Hush Productions, to provide great underground music for dance parties. Hush Productions brought out amazing talent like Spun, Tim Deluxe, and Halo. After a series of very successful parties, Luke decided to open a San Francisco branch of Hush Productions to continue the good beats and great times. It was in San Francisco that Luke first started tapping into the west coast tribal, downtempo dub sounds, adding Kruder and Dorfmeister and Thievery Corporation to his track rotations. Luke moved to New York to continue his pursuit in finding the ultimate amalgamation of sound. Mid to west to east coast flavor. Coachella, the biggest festival in the world, sells 198,000 tickets and pulls in $84 million for the Californian event. The UK’s largest festival – Glastonbury – has a turnover of £37m but sees profits of just £86,000: less than 50p per ticket. 2. In the wet summer of 2012 57 UK music festivals were cancelled. It’s a tough business: famous events such as The Big Chill, Sonisphere, Oxegen and Cloud 9 have all fallen silent recently. This year Austin’s 3-day Levitation Festival, Manchester’s All Today’s Parties festival and the Forgotten Fields 2016 Festival have already joined their ranks. 3.
